The Importance of Faith in Angels • ‘The Noble Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him by his Lord, and so do the

believers; all have accepted faith in Allah and His angels and His Books and His Noble Messengers; saying, "We do not make any distinction, in believing, between any of His Noble Messengers"; and they said, "We hear, and we obey; Your forgiveness be granted, O our Lord, and towards You is our return.“ Surah Al Baqarah 2:285

• Al Imam Al Baihaqi (Allah shower mercy upon him) stated in ‘Shu’ab ul Iman’ that faith in the Angels is inclusive of various beliefs including; Confirming that they exist; recognising their status, understanding that they are the servants of Allah the Almighty, they are commanded to carry out good actions, they are only able to carry out those actions they are granted the ability to carry out by Allah the Almighty and the Angels can die – however Allah the Almighty has granted them very long lives and He will not take them until their time comes. Our belief in the Angels is in such a way that does not equate them in any way to Allah the Almighty Who is free from all partners- we do not believe Angels to have divinity or to be gods like the polytheists of the past believed. We believe that some of them are “Rusul” who were sent to convey to the creation, some are those who are carrying the Throne, some are the guards to Paradise, some are the guards to the hellfire and some are the scribes who record the actions of creation. Shu’ab ul Iman lil Baihaqi

• Sayyiduna AbdUllah Ibn ‘Omar (Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from Sayyiduna ‘Omar Ibn Al Khattaab (Allah be pleased with him) who narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated when asked about faith (Imaan), “To believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books and His Messengers.” At Targheeb wat Tarheeb

The Creation of Angels • Imam Muslim (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrates from the Mother of Believers, Sayyidah A’ishah As Siddeeqah

(Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated, “The Angels were created from Noor (Light) whilst the Jinn were created from fire and Sayyiduna Adam was created as described to you.” Sahih Muslim, Kitaab uz Zuhd

• There are uncountable Angels that exist – ‘And no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man.’ Surah As Saaffaat 74:31

• Imam Ahmad Ibn Hambal, At Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah and Al Haakim (Allah shower mercy upon them) narrate from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated that the heaven creaked and it had the right to creak. There is not an area on it equivalent to four fingers except that there is an Angel therein placing its forehead (in prostration). In a similar narration of Sayyiduna Abu Dharr mentioned in At Tirmidhi, Musnad Imam Ahmad and Ibn Majah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Indeed I see what you do not see and hear what you do not hear. The sky creaked and it is the right of the heaven to creak. By the Being in Whose Power is my soul, there is not a place of four fingers on it except that there is an Angel placing its head in prostration to Allah. By Allah! If you knew what I know you would laugh less and cry more..”

• Mulla Ali Al Qari (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrates a statement of At Teebi (Allah shower mercy upon him) that the abundance of Angels within it has made the heaven feel overburdened until it has creaked. This indicates the abundance of the Angels. Mirqaat ul Mafaateeh commentary upon Mishkaat ul Masaabeeh

• Mulla Ali Al Qari (Allah shower mercy upon him) also mentions the possibility of the creaking to be in the meaning of the noise it makes when praising Allah the Almighty and mentioning His Majesty.

• Al Imam At Tabarani narrates from Sayyiduna Jabir Ibn ‘AbdIllah (Allah be pleased with them both) who stated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “There is not a place equivalent to a foot, a handspan or a palm within the seven heavens except that there is an Angel upon it standing (in worship) or an Angel prostrating. When it is the Day of Judgement, they will all say, “Glory be to You! We did not worship You as You should be worshipped. However we did not ascribe anything as partner to you.”

The Name of Jibril

• Ibn Jarir At Tabari (Allah shower mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna ‘Ali Ibn Husayn that the name of Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) is AbdUllah. In Ad Durr ul Manthoor it is narrated from Ibn Abi Haatim that Jibr means servant and Eel means Allah.

• Imam Ibn Abi Haatim narrates from ‘Abd ul ‘Azeez Ibn ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him) that the name of Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) amongst the Angels is Khaadimu Rabbihi – ‘the Servant of his Lord.’

• Musa Ibn Abi A’ishah narrates that Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) is the leader of the dwellers of heaven.

• Al Imam At Tabarani (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrates from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Should I not inform you of the most virtuous of the Angels – Jibril?”

The Beauty of Sayyiduna Jibril

• Imam Muslim narrates from AbdUllah Ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) in a green robe. Sayyiduna Jibril was covering whatever was between the sky and earth.

• Abu-sh-Shaykh narrates from Sayyidah A’ishah (Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated that he saw Sayyiduna Jibril descending filling whatever was between East and West. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was wearing clothes made of silk brocade upon which there were pearls and rubies hanging.

• Shuraih Ibn AbdIllah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) when he ascended to the heavens. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw that the wings of Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) were beautified with green jewels, pearls and rubies. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned that he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Sayyiduna Jibril in various forms and that mostly he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) arriving in the form of Sayyiduna Dihyah Al Kalbi (Allah be pleased with him). Sometimes the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would observe Sayyiduna Jibril like a man views his companion from behind a screen. Al Habaaik fii Akhbaar il Malaaik.

• Al Imam Ahmad (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrates from Sayyiduna AbdUllah Ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) in his original state on two occasions. On the first occasion, the Master of all creation (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) requested to see Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Jibril therefore revealed his original form and covered the entire horizon. The second occasion was on the night of Al Israa wal Mi’raj near Sidratul Muntahaa.

• It is narrated from Sayyiduna AbdUllah Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “What is between the two shoulders of Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) is the distance of five hundred years for the fastest bird.” Ad Durr ul Manthoor

The visit by Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) to an ill Companion • Al Imam At Tabarani (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrates from Sayyiduna AbdUllah Ibn

Abbas (Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) visited a Companion from Al Ansaar who was ill. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came close to the house of this Companion, he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard a person speaking with the ill man. When the Beloved of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sought permission and entered the house, no one was with the ill man. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “I heard you speaking to someone else.” The Companion (Allah be pleased with him) responded that a man had visited him who was so noble in meeting and so beautiful in discussion that after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), this visitor was the only individual seen to possess these qualities at such a high standard. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated that this visitor was Jibril and that there were men amongst the Companions who were of such great stature that if they made an oath by Allah, Allah would fulfil their oath.

• Al Imam At Tabarani (Allah shower mercy upon him) also narrates from Sayyidah Maimoonah Bint Sa’d that she asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) whether a person in the state of Janaabah (major impurity in which case bathing is necessary) can sleep. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated, “I do not prefer that he sleeps unless he has performed Wudhu for I fear that he may pass away without Jibril visiting him.” Al Haawi lil Fataawa

Jibril (peace be upon him) has been given duty to fulfil the needs of the creation

• Al Imam Al Baihaqi narrates in Shu’ab ul Imaan and Al Imam As Suyuti (Allah shower mercy upon them) mentions this narration in Ad Durr ul Manthoor from Sayyiduna Jabir Ibn AbdIllah (Allah be pleased with him) that the Master of all creation (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated that Jibril is given the duty to fulfil the needs of the bondsmen. When a believer supplicates, Allah the Almighty commands Jibril (peace be upon him) to withhold the need of the believer as Allah the Almighty loves the believer and loves his voice. When a disbeliever expresses his desire, Allah the Almighty commands Jibril (peace be upon him) to fulfil his desire as Allah dislikes him and his voice. Al Baihaqi mentions a similar narration from Sayyiduna Thabit (Allah be pleased with him).

The test of a special bondsman

• Al Hakeem At Tirmidhi narrates from Abu Dharr Al Ghifari (Allah be pleased with him) stated that indeed Allah states, “O Jibril! Remove the sweetness from the heart of my believing bondsman that he would find in there for Me.” So the heart of the believer becomes painfully agitated and it yearns for that which it felt. This affliction that this bondsman feels is worse than any other affliction. Allah looks with Mercy towards him in this state and states, “O Jibril! Return to the heart of my bondsman what you removed from him. Indeed I tested him and found him truthful and I shall provide to him even more from My Court.”

The fear that the Leader of the Angels has in the Court of Allah

• Ibn ‘Asaakir (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrates in Tareekh ud Dimashq from Sayyiduna Ali (Allah enlighten his noble countenance) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “When I wish I look towards Jibril embracing the veils of the Ka’bah supplicating تزل ال ماجد يا واجد يا

علي بها أنعمت نعمة عني “O Omnipotent, O the Most honoured! Do not deprive me of the favour You have granted to me.”

• Al Imam Ahmad narrated in ‘Kitaab uz Zuhd’ from Abu Imran Al Jawni that it reached him that Jibril came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) whilst Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) was crying. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) what was causing him to cry. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) responded, “Why should I not cry? By Allah My eye has never dried since Allah created fire out of fear that I disobey Him and He throw me into it.”

• Al Imam At Tabarani (Allah shower mercy on him) narrates from the Mother of Believers, Umm Salamah (Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated that Indeed there are two Angels in the Skies – one of them commands firmly and the other leniently and both of them are correct – Jibril and Mikaaeel (peace be upon them). Similarly there were two Prophets one of whom would command firmly and other leniently. Both of them were correct – Sayyiduna Ibrahim and Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon them both). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had two Companions one of whom would command firmly and the other leniently yet both were correct – Abu Bakr and Omar (Allah be pleased with them both).

• Al Imam Ahmad (Allah shower mercy upon him) narrated from Rabaah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said to Jibril, “You always come with eyes flowing with tears.” Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) stated, “Indeed I never laughed since the fire of hell was created.”

Sayyiduna Jibril’s Love for Allah’s Beloved • Sayyiduna AbdUllah Ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased

with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) once came in the court of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him, “O Jibril! I perceive that I have a status in your sight.” Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) replied, “Indeed! By He Who sent you with the truth! I was never sent to a Prophet who was more beloved to me than you.”

Hadith Jibril • It is mentioned in Sahih Muslim that Sayyiduna Omar Ibn Al Khattab narrated that the Companions were seated in the

blessed Court of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man arrived before them who was wearing very white clothes and whose hair were extremely black – there was no sign of travel upon him. None of the Companions was acquainted with him. This man sat close to Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and rested his knees against the blessed knees of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he placed his hands upon his thighs. He said, “O Muhammad! Inform me about Islam.” Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Islam is to testify that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), to establish Salaah (Prayer), to give Zakaah (essential charity), to fast in Ramadhan and to perform Hajj of the House if you can reach it.” The man said, “You have spoken the truth.” Sayyiduna Omar says, “We were amazed at him asking and affirming.” The man then asked, “Inform me about Imaan.” Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “To believe in Allah, his Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Day of Judgement and to believe in good and bad fate.” The man said, “You have spoken the truth.” The man said, “Inform me about Ihsaan.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said, “ Ihsaan is to worship Allah as though you see Him. If you cannot see Him then He can see you.” The man said, “Inform about the Hour.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “The questioned does not know more about it than the questioner.” The man said, “So inform me of its signs.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “That a slave girl will give birth to her mistress and that you will see the barefooted, naked, poor, shepherds competing in raising tall buildings.” Sayyiduna Omar says, “The man left and I stopped for a while then the Messenger of Allah said to me,”O Omar! Do you know who the questioner was?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Messenger of Allah said, “it was Jibril who came to teach you your religion.”

• Al Imam An Nawawi states in his commentary of this Hadith within his commentary upon Sahih Muslim that Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) placed his hands on his own thighs and sat as a student.

• Al Qadhi ‘Iyaadh stated that this Hadeeth is inclusive of all the types of physical and spiritual acts of worship to the extent that all religious sciences are derived from this Hadith.

The Daily Meeting with the Best of all creation in the Holy Month of Ramadhan •

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was the most generous of people and the most generous he would be was in Ramadan when Jibril would meet him. Jibril would meet him every night to read the Quran with him. Truly the Messenger of Allah was more generous than a continuously blowing wind.” Al Jami' As Sahih lil Bukhari
