HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT COURSE
FOR YOUIt’s simple, we’ve organised all of our courses by subject
area and ‘level’ so that you can find the course that you are interested in really quickly. You can find out more about each
course on our website, just use the course search facility.
A GUIDE TO COURSE LEVELS
SHORT AND TASTER COURSES We understand that you might like to ‘try before you buy,’ so why not enrol on one of our short and taster courses first to see if you like it, then you can progress onto the next level. Our short and taster courses last no more than 10 weeks.
LEVEL 1 - ENTRY AND BEGINNER These courses don’t usually require any prior knowledge of a subject and they will help you to learn the basics. Level 1 courses are usually a stepping-stone to further study.
LEVEL 2 - INTERMEDIATE Designed to help you build on your skills at level 1, our level 2 intermediate courses require more study commitment and will help to secure your knowledge.
LEVEL 3 - ADVANCED Advanced, or level 3 courses will develop a detailed level of skills, knowledge and experience in a chosen subject. They will usually have individual entry requirements.
HIGHER AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES Designed for those looking to study on an HNC, HND, a degree or for those looking to obtain professional qualifications in their current role for example; CIPD and CMI. You must have relevant qualifications to gain entry onto these programmes, Our HE courses are amongst the lowest priced in the region and you can apply for a loan to cover the tuition fee, meaning you don’t have to pay the fee up front.

HANNAH LAYFORD“Since completing the Pattern
Cutting course, I’ve kept up with my blog and this has opened up so many opportunities to work
with fashion brands I love”
H annah had studied textiles at Sunderland College as a school leaver and upon graduating from
Newcastle University aged 21 was looking for jobs in the creative industry. To make use of her spare time while job hunting she signed up for Pattern Cutting at Sunderland College and wrote on her blog about her creations. This opened up opportunities to work with brand names such as Barbour, French Connection, Dr Martens and Laura Ashley.
After completing Pattern Cutting, Hannah walked into a job at Precept, a creative brand communications agency in Newcastle and was able to implement the transferable skills studied during her time at the college into the workplace.
“I’d already studied textiles at Sunderland College before going to university, so it was lovely to come back for Pattern Cutting. The course fees were low which was great for a recent graduate and there was a lot of flexibility in the course. My tutor was good at catering to different ability levels and encouraged us to try new things.”
“I was writing freelance and blogging while studying the course. Pattern Cutting helped me improve my technical knowledge of how garments were put together and gave me more skills to be able to design and create pieces.”
“When I started at Precept, clients included fashion brands which were been taken through full rebrands from logo and web design right through to the care labels and swing tags. Having that technical understanding meant that I could apply the knowledge and help the designers create functional as well as aesthetically pleasing designs.”
“Since completing the Pattern Cutting course, I’ve kept up with my blog and this has opened up so many opportunities to work with fashion brands I love. I’m not sure where I’ll be in the future but I’ll definitely still be blogging and in the North East because I love the region and there’s some pretty exciting things happening here at the moment.”
“I’ve worked hard to get where I am, but I think I was just lucky in that I realised what I was good at and enjoyed doing, then built a career out of it. If I could give someone who was in my position advice now, it would be just have fun, work hard and learn all you can... because you never know when a course you signed yourself up for might come in handy!”

SUSAN BURNS
“Without the qualifications from Sunderland College I
wouldn’t be where I am today”
S usan was working in finance and administration when she heard lots of positive feedback from
previous students about the Access to Counselling course. Tired of her job she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a counsellor and signed on the dotted line to start studying it.
The choice was an easy one due to the wide range of support available for students with a disability, like Susan and the location of the campus.
After studying with Sunderland College, Susan soon landed her dream job, working with I.M.P.A.C.T. a company who help people overcome difficult circumstances. After specialising in adult counselling, Susan joined forces with I.M.P.A.C.T. to help support their offering. Working together they can now offer a joined up approach through family counselling sessions.
Susan said: “Without the qualifications from Sunderland College I wouldn’t be where I am today. Sunderland College helped me with lots of guidance and advice. As well as learning about the job, you learn lots about yourself while doing a counselling course. It can be quite heart wrenching but it was the support of the tutors that kept me going.”
“The highlight of my career has got to be working with really difficult cases, especially those that have been turned down by other organisations for therapy. Working with these people and enabling them to achieve their therapy goals is a highlight to me.”
To find out details of our Access to Counselling programme, please see page 13.

ANDY MARTIN
“Every job I’ve had has been down to the qualifications and experience
I had at Sunderland College”
A ndy was already studying a vocational art and design course and A-Levels at Sunderland
College before he joined the HND Photography and Digital Imaging course.
Now an established photographer, his long term project ‘This is Sunderland’ which aims to document the ever-changing industrial and historic landscape of Wearside shot him to internet fame when it went viral, with over one thousand views in the first hour.
Now working for the Musicians Union in London managing their website and digital media, in his spare time Andy can be found in his Sunderland city centre based studio experimenting with old and new photography techniques.
Andy said: “The best thing about Sunderland College was the people. It’s a really good community and I’m still in touch with all the friends I made and my lecturers. After finishing my HND, I did various jobs and was self-employed for a while. Every job I’ve had has been down to the qualifications and experience I had at Sunderland College.”
“The things I learnt on the course set me on a path to a career. I did a lot of night time photography after leaving too and pushed myself to improve my skills. I think the inspiration has to come from within yourself, you have to have a desire to push yourself and be the best you can.”
“In a few years’ time I’d like to be doing large scale projects and working with the Arts Council.”
To find out more about our Photography courses please see page 8
