SCS New Mobility VanSunnyside Community Services, SCS Executive Director Judy Zangwill and program participants braved

the cold to thank Queens Borough President Helen Marshall for her efforts in providing capital funding fora much-needed new van and for her friendship and support through the years. Transportation is critical forolder individuals with limited mobility who have no other way to access the essential services provided bySunnyside Community Services. According to Zangwill, last year SCS logged 11,255 rides, enablinghundreds of older adults with limited mobility access to various SCS services.

young president, John FitzgeraldKennedy, died from a gunshotwound to his head.

It was a small group, most ofwhom remembered that day andlived through the terror, griefand social chaos that followedthat event and the assassinationsof Martin Luther King and Rob-ert F. Kennedy that followed in thefew years afterward.

They stood through a minuteof silence marked at 2pm, thehour the president’s death wasannounced. They listened to areading of the Gettysburg Ad-dress, which turned 150 yearsold just two days before. Theysang the United States NavyHymn in memory of the sailor

Then they took turns readingpassages from his first inauguraladdress. For the man who said,“Ask not what your country can dofor you, Ask what you can do foryour country,” a small ceremonyand a heartfelt salute on a greyNovember day was the least theycould do for him.

The whole event didn’t last

long, but one mourner, who wasa school girl the day he died, saidthere was some poetic justice. For the twenty minutes they werethere, the sun came out. The sky

had been leaden all morningand was again all afternoon. They left behind his picture, and pictures of flowers asso-ciated with him, his favoriteflower the Blue Bachelor andthe JFK hybrid tea rose. Theywill plant them in the Spring.

Kick Off To Holiday Season

The $10,000 grant Van Bramer helped secure from JetBlue andWarner Bros. allowed 10 mature trees to be replanted. Andrews Grovesustained significant damage to play equipment, safety surfaces, fencingas well as its tall signature trees, which gave the playground its popularnickname, Shady Park. Once the replanting is complete Andrews Grovewill be home to four Zelcovas, three Pin Oaks, two Silver Lindens andone Dogwood.

“For the past year, Shady Park became Sandy’s Park as the stormdenied our community a cherished green space,” said State SenatorMichael Gianaris. “We’re reclaiming Shady Park for our children andfor future generations. My gratitude extends to Councilman Van Bramer,Sheila Lewandowski, Caroline Paul and the Friends of Shady Park, andthe entire Long Island City Community.”

“The loss of the trees really hit everyone hard,” said SheilaLewandowski, Co-Founder of Friends of Shady Park. “The tragedybrought us together. Council Member Van Bramer listened to thiscommunity when we said Shady Park is special to everyone in thecommunity. We mourned and organized and he responded. Replacingthe trees brought us all together. Every community has a place, a spot thatis special for everyone. That’s what Shady Park is. Our new trees will sitwith the remaining old trees just like how the children play in the parkand our elders sit in the shade.”
