RAIL: Nearest railway station (5 mins by foot) Portsmouth & Southsea Station. Turn left out ofstation into Guildhall Square and follow fingerposts for ‘Law-courts’, then cross road at Pelicancrossing and walk past University Art & Design Eldon building on corner of Middle Street. Pro-ceed along Middle Street to find us 50yds on right (Opposite The Raven PH).ROAD: From the A3 / A27 take M275 Portsmouth West, follow all signs for Historic Water-front as far as the traffic lights under railway bridge at Anglesea Road/Park Road junction (righthand lane goes to ‘Gunwharf Quays’). Keep in left hand lane here to junction a few yards furtheron at King Richard 1 Street. Take left hand turning sign posted ‘Law-courts’ up the dual car-raigeway to roundabout, take last exit down other side of carraigeway to turn first left into MiddleStreet, where we are 50yds on the right.

Our cylinder glass is imported from Poland and it is manufactured using a traditional method of flatglass-making.

Cylinder glass is also known as broad or sheet glass.

The actual technique varies from country to country. It is still manufactured in three factories in Eu-rope - Jaslo in Poland, Lamberts in Germany and St Just in France. A small amount of cylinder glass isalso still being made in Blenko in the USA.

Hand spun traditional bullions for restoration and heritageprojects.Available in clear and pale tints of green, blue and amber.

Production of a BullionThe first step in making a bullion is gathering molten glass on the end of an iron tube. The glass can weigh as much as 11pounds and has to be repeatedly dipped in molten glass to gather sufficient material. The glass is blown to a pear shape andwith repeated heating and blowing, it is turned into a globe. Whilst the glass is still semi-molten, the side opposite the blowtube is partially flattened by pressure on a plane surface.A small quantity of molten glass is gathered on the end of a punt (a strong metal bar) and this is applied to the centre of theflattened side, directly opposite the hollow blow tube. The blow tube is removed by applying water - this causes the glass tofracture, leaving a circular hole about 2 inches in diameter where the tube was attached.The hollow globe is then reheated and spun. The hole slowly enlarges as the globe is repeatedly heated and spun, and theoverall globe diameter increases, forming a disc turned in on itself. Eventually the "hole" is almost the same diameter as thedisc and at this point, further spinning causes the hole to vanish, leaving a uniform disc 50 to 60 inches in diameter. It willbe of uniform thickness, except at the point where it connects to the punt - there will be a slight lump there called the bull'seye.

The finished disc then has to be annealed carefully in an annealing oven to remove brittleness and allow the glazier to beable to cut it as required.

Roundels:Description:Our roundels are madethe traditional way - byhand. Molten glass isgathered on a ponti rodand is spun between twographite boards. Whenthe desired diameter isreached, the roundel isbroken off the rod andallowed to slowly cool inan oven to anneal thestress created from theglass manufacture.

The making of roundelsis highly skilled, and dueto the manual productionprocess, each piece isentirely unique.
