A Galaxy Far Away, 25 Years Later!By the time you read this the story will havebroken at New York Comic Con, with DarkHorse revealing their new title, Star Wars:Invasion, written and drawn interestinglyenough by two locals, Tom Taylor and ColinWilson. Supanova is hosting both these starsin Melbourne and Brisbane and thought we’dshare an exclusive sneak peek…

SN: For those who have only watched themovies how does Star Wars: Invasion fit intothe on screen universe fans are used toexperiencing?

TOM: It’s 25 years after the Battle of Yavin(when the first death star was destroyed) so Iguess it’s ‘slightly more recently in a Galaxyfar, far away’. Time has marched on and Hanand Leia have children, who are training onYavin 4, where Master Luke Skywalker hasestablished a Jedi training facility. A race oftechnology-hating, pain-loving freaks calledthe Yuuzhan Vong have appeared at the edgeof the galaxy, hell bent on taking this galaxy astheir own. Their living ships and weapons areunlike anything ever seen before and theyseem to be unstoppable. Before the serieseven starts, the Yuuzhan Vong have killedmillions of people and… Chewbacca. Theykilled Chewbacca! How? They dropped amoon on him. Yep, a moon.

In our first issue, the invaders decimate aplanet; a family torn apart by this attackprovides us with our main characters. FinnGalfridian is evacuated by Luke Skywalker andset on the path of a Jedi. The rest of theGalfridian family isn’t quite so lucky.

SN: So this comic-book is as "official" as if itwere a movie itself?

TOM: Star Wars continuity spans thousandsof years and it’s all pretty much official. Thereare actually a series of very popular novelsthat deal with the period of time I’m workingin already. Fortunately for me and thereaders, this is a war that cost thousands ofworlds and trillions of lives, so there’s a lot ofdestruction left for us to play with… don’tget too attached to any of the characters.

SN: Do the "Invaders" come with an affinitytowards the Light or Dark side of the Force?What makes the Invaders threat unique todeal with?

TOM: The Yuuzhan Vong are ruthlesswarriors who won’t hesitate in dealing outdeath, even to an entire species, but one ofthe main reasons the Yuuzhan Vong are soformidable is that they exist outside theForce. They can’t be detected by the Forceand some Force powers simply don’t workon them. This means that a Jedi attempting,say, a mind trick on a Yuuzhan Vong, might findthe Yuuzhan Vong is already eating his heart.It’s hard to fight back when something iseating your heart.Try it some time…

SN: How did two local Aussies end upwriting and illustrating SW:I for Dark Horse Comics?

TOM: Well, Colin is unbelievably talentedand I’m… um… I have no idea how I got this gig.

COLIN: Clearly he knew a LOT more aboutthe whole Star Wars universe than I did, andit turned out that he could write as well.Westarted adapting some of his short theatrepieces into comic stories, and his scriptsworked really well. Several litres of coffeelater I said look, stop badgering me, go talk toDark Horse directly.

TOM: So, I did. Star Wars editor RandyStradley obviously liked what I had to say andwhat I wanted to do with the serious. Thenext thing I knew, I was signing lots of bits ofpaper with Dark Horse and Lucasfilm logos.
