On this basis, it has been possible not only to obtain a qualitative understanding, but to a large extent to perform a quantitative anal- ysis of such remarkable phenomena as superconductivity and superfluidity. For the reason indicated above, the same methods have also found fruitful application in the theory of nuclear structure, where they have led to explanation of the "gap" in the energy spectrum ofeven nuclei and have made possible a detailed analysis of the collective excitations of the nuclear constituents. The book under review is mainly concerned with a systematic exposition of the application of the new methods to general systems of fermions and bosons. It also gives a concise and lucid account of the main features of superfluidity and a more lengthy discussion of superconductivity; there is also a chapter on long- wave electromagnetic radiation in dense media. The treatment naturally makes extensive use of the brilliant contributions made by the Russian school under Landau's leadership, but it does full justice to the no less fundamental work of other physicists, from which Landau himself derived much in- spiration. (I know, for instance, from a conversation at the Kiev conference, Landau's warm ad- miration for the work of Matsubara.) The present English translation is brought up-to-date by sub- stantial additions supplied by the authors; hence its designation as a "second edition". Cloth S12.50) These two monographs are complementary in the sense that the reader of the latter is referred to the former for a more thorough theoretical discussion of the foundations. Bonne monographie, quoique parfois un peu sommaire, et malheureusement ddparde par un abus, frisant le scandale, d'am6ricanismes absolument superflus. 11 est regrettable dgalement que la typo- graphie, dans la composition des formules, s'dcarte des rhgles usuelles, au grand ddpends de la Idgi- bilitd. Les bonnes r~gles, d'ailleurs tr4s simples, sont dnoncdes dans les recommandations de la Com- missions des Symboles, Unitds et Nomenclature de I'IUPAP. L.R. K. GOTTFRIED, Quantum mechanics, Vol. i: Fundamentals (Benjamin, New York, 1966. xvii-494 p.) A textbook in the highest class. The author, with becoming modesty, tells us that he is heavily in Dirac's and Pauli's debt. Who is not? Students will henceforth be indebted to him for being introduced in such a masterly fashion to the great masters' original conceptions as well as to the latest refinements they have received. The delight which also seasoned physicists will find in a perusal of the book is enhanced by a remarkably fine typographical set-up, which does honour to the enterprising publisher. (The only formal blemish is the use of aberrant unit symbols, such as ev instead of eV, which ought no longer to be tolerated, especially not in a textbook.) I should have liked to stop here, but 1 must end, regretfully, on a "tu quoque"!. The author's pil- grimage to Copenhagen has apparently not made him quite firm enough to withstand the subtle princetonian heresies, which he quotes approvingly in a footnote on p. 788. Let us hope that this footnote, which spoils an otherwise excellent discussion of the epistemological questions, will be turned into its negation in the next edition. L.R.
