Hookele Elementary School, located across the street fromKapolei High School, is thefirst school in Hawaiiconstructed using design-buildcriteria. The campus wasdesigned with input fromschool level administrators andstaff who will be working atthe site, which will servechildren in grades pre-K to 5.
Supt. Kathryn Matayoshi andthe Board of Education (BOE)hosted First Lady Dawn Igeand state lawmakers with a tourof the school followed by aBOE meeting in the cafeteriaon July 21. “The work put intothis school began with a verystrategic approach to supportnew learning environments,”said Matayoshi. “This projectwas done on time and onbudget, which could not havebeen possible without thepublic-private partnershipcommitment.”
D.R. Horton Hawaiiprovided the land for the projectand the 2013 Legislatureappropriated $40 million for theconstruction of the school.
Design-build is a constructionproject delivery method. Unlikethe traditional approach forconstruction, which consists ofthe separate selection of adesigner and contractor, design-
build has a single point ofresponsibility. This approachreduces risks and overall costs, and requires funding up front.(BOE presentation: bit.ly/HIDOEdesbuild)
