Types of SuperstitionTypes of SuperstitionTypes of SuperstitionTypes of Superstition

Predictive superstitions:-These are when people believe that a particular superstition will predict an oncoming event, such as a black cat predicting bad luck or a woman who catches the bride's bouquet at a wedding being the next to get married.

Causative superstitions:-These are based on someone actually doing something to make something bad happen. For example, breaking a mirror is said to bring you seven years of bad luck. Also, if you open an umbrella inside a house you will receive bad luck. In this case opening the umbrella isn't said to have predicted bad luck, but to have made the bad luck happen to the person who opened it.

Conversion superstitions:-These generally combine predictive and causative superstitions. If you spill salt, you will receive bad luck (which is a causative superstition). However, if you throw some of the spilled salt over your left shoulder, you will avert the bad luck. You have converted or annulled the negative superstition!

I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition (Christianity) one redeeming feature. They are all alike founded on fables and mythology.

-Thomas Jefferson

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

-Helen Keller

Superstition is the poetry of life.

-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

It is an infantile superstition of the human spirit that virginity would be thought a virtue and not the barrier that separates ignorance from knowledge.

-Voltaire

Superstition is to religion what astrology is to astronomy the mad daughter of a wise mother. These daughters have too long dominated the earth.

Science can purify religion from error and superstition. Religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.

A fool's brain digests philosophy into folly, science into superstition, and art into pedantry. Hence University education.

-George Bernard Shaw

Fear is the main source of superstition, and one of the main sources of cruelty. To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom.

-Bertrand Russell

Man's mind is like a store of idolatry and superstition; so much so that if a man believes his own mind it is certain that he will forsake God and forge some idol in his own brain.

-John Calvin

Humanity has the stars in its future, and that future is too important to be lost under the burden of juvenile folly and ignorant superstition.

CurseThe Curse of the Bambino (1920–2004) was an urban

myth cited as a reason for the failure of the Boston Red Sox baseball team to win the World Series for 86 years after they sold Babe Ruth, sometimes called The Bambino, to the New York Yankees. The flip side of the curse was New York's success. After the sale, the once-lackluster Yankees became one of the most flourishing franchises in North American professional sports. While some fans took the superstition of the curse seriously, many others used the expression in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

The StonePeople who believe in superstition say that by kissing the

Blarney Stone, one receives the ‘Gift of the Gab’. The gift of the gab is best described in the context of "What Blarney!" - the term used by the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I. This was in response to Cormac Teige McCarthy's attempt to sweet talk his way out of a sticky situation, during negotiations of the takeover of the Blarney Castle by the occupying English forces. Cormac Teige himself was the King of Munster, living in the Blarney Castle around the 14th century. The stone itself is believed to have been created by a witch way back in the middle ages.
