“The Lexile measure of a book refers to its text difficulty only. A Lexile measure does not take the subject matter or content of the book into consideration. Lexile measures are based on two well-established predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: word frequency and sentence length.”

College English Departments
CompulsoryReading Lists
What do the College English Department Chairs say about
this?

CompulsoryReading ListsDear College English Departments, “Do you have a recommended
College Prep Reading List
for incoming Freshmen?”
Of the 6 colleges who responded, none have
a college-prep suggested reading list.
Western Carolina University -- I have never been asked this
question before, and I’m so pleased to get your request!
East Carolina University - “I am so pleased to hear your
request, but I am not sure how to respond. Gone are the days
(here at least) when students are expected to have a
particular literary background other than the usual
Shakespeare play or two.”
Warren Wilson College - “In my opinion, it's not content that
prepares a student, but frame of mind and attitude, and it's
not obvious how that is encouraged and developed.”

CompulsoryReading Lists
Wake Forest University - “We have no set curriculum in English
at Wake Forest…”
Mars Hill College – “We have not compiled a reading list for
prospective students… Our general advice would be to read,
read, read--and, of course, to write about their reading and
any other topics that interest them.”
North Carolina State - “No, we don't have such a list any
more. I think the important thing is to encourage [students]
to read as much as possible and to take college prep classes if
they are available at your high school. We've found that the
best preparation for this course actually comes from the
International Baccalaureate program, not from AP. If the
students have the opportunity to participate in the IB program,
they'd have the possibility of earning exemption from ENG 101
at NCSU (we don't give exemption based on AP scores at this
time).”
Nearest International Baccalaureate program – Hickory High School

FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOLThese novels are not being assigned.
Please allow Freedom students the option to read widely-acclaimed novels with a higher degree of
difficulty to prepare for the AP exam.

PATTON HIGH SCHOOLThese novels are not being assigned.
Please allow Patton students the option to read widely-acclaimed novels with a higher degree of
difficulty to prepare for the AP exam.

How do you teachtwo novels at the same time?
One BCPS Language Arts Chairperson’s approach:
“As for teaching a class with two novels… we will cross that
bridge when we get to it.”
Or, here’s another response…
How?

CompulsoryReading Lists
“Teachers operate small groups within the same classroom as
part of best practices. With Literature Circles, one group may
be having a discussion about their particular book, one group
may be reading silently or conducting Think/Pair/Share
activities, and one group -- or individual -- would be engaged
with the teacher. (This is just one structure you might see within
a print-rich classroom.) Through tiered assignments, all
students could have appropriate tasks and all remain within the
classroom.
The use of Literature Circles requires strategic instruction,
organization, and thoughtful planning.
It is an expectation that our ELA teachers meet the needs of all
students.
~Beth Isenhour, Catawba County Public Schools
