BRIAN Hermann’s award winning Crater Lake Developments is the successful buyer of the New Zealand business of Gregory Commercial Furniture.

The new owner will maintain the existing Damba and Gregory brands with the new company entity to be known as Damba Gregory Commercial Furniture Limited.

Inventis has been implementing strategies to simplify the structure of the business across its Australian operations aimed at delivering improved operational effectiveness, faster decision-making and sharper commercial execution. This process is now complete with the appointment of an experienced new senior management team with a clear focus on customer service, quality and profitability.

Inventis Limited Executive Chairman, Tony Noun said: “In addition to the benefits arising from this transaction for New Zealand stakeholders, including customers, staff and suppliers, the sale has positive flow on effects for the Australian operations.

The bringing together of the senior management team will simplify the way we do business. There are many synergies to be had from this business integration, including the unique people skills on all sides.

The consolidation of the Australian operations will also involve the relocation of the two core manufacturing facilities under single roof. This will enable the new management team to drive further revenue and efficiencies, and unlock the potential of all the brands. ●

THE Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute is busy preparing this year’s Conference, Certified Designers Forum and Awards Gala, to be held in Hilton Cairns on 28 and 29 August.

As the only Australian conference dedicated solely to kitchen and bathroom designers, the KBDi Conference is an excellent opportunity to join like-minded design professionals in relevant and inspiring sessions.

Conference delegates are encouraged to collaborate with their peers, share their wisdom and talent and learn from industry experts and suppliers in the tropical surrounds of the Hilton Cairns resort.

The collaboration continues with the KBDi Certified Designers Forum, where Australia’s finest kitchen and bathroom designers actively discuss issues pertinent to the industry, including intellectual property and copyright, design inspiration, personal motivation and more.

There’ll be much to celebrate, too, with the KBDi Designer Awards 2015 Gala coinciding with the conference.●

SICAM is setting out to be a very interesting event with the participation of top-quality international companies.

The surface area of the last edition had already been booked by mid-March, with over 90% of last year’s exhibitors returning again.

Recognising SICAM as a leading event at global level, approximately 500 exhibitors took part in 2014, including 33% from overseas, and over 17,000 professional visitors came from as many as 95 countries. Once again, the furniture sector made SICAM its opportunity to meet both historical and well-established markets and, above all, the new emerging markets, which are destined to represent some of the demands of greatest interest in the future.

The event is obviously focused on components and accessories, i.e. the details which characterise a furnishing product: it is their

combination that gives life to new pieces, which every year characterise the collections and realise innovation.

The use of the ‘design’ resource to build an innovation strategy is, without doubt, a vital weapon for boosting the capacity of products offered by every company on the global markets. The fact that the furniture sector, lying second in Italy for the number of companies and third for trade balance, is at an equal standing with the fashion industry, which is identified with the ‘made in Italy’ label throughout the globe, is above all thanks to the creative ability that generates Italian furniture and the design which often sets it apart.

So the date is set for 13 to 16 October 2015 for the seventh edition of SICAM, the International Exhibition of Components, Semi-finished Products and Accessories for the Furniture Industry, in Pordenone, Italy. ●

BOLD and inventive use of colour defines the winners of the 2015 Dulux Colour Awards.

Entries throughout showcased a major change in paint usage with art references and unique graphics. This approach is not dissimilar to modernist art, highlighting a movement away from the minimalist method seen in previous years. This was shown in a ‘more is less’ approach which seemed to be embraced in an overwhelming use of colour throughout elements.

However, it was the projects that juggled this colour explosion in a considered approach who shone in their respective categories. Judges were unanimously impressed by the cross-sectional use of colour, overall creativity and calibre of professional and student entries.

A clear standout was the Grand Prix winner, Lexus Design Pavilion, crafted by Mim Design. The installation used subtle ombre colour appearing to ‘come off the wall’, which flat colour alone cannot achieve. With a stunning alignment to a French Impressionist feel the project was a great example of colour expression.

With Vionaro Grass has created an exciting design solution for all applications in living, kitchen and bathroom interiors.

The 13 millimetre slim drawer side of the complete system is based on the Dynapro concealed slide system that has been installed millions of times over and that won the internationally recognised Red Dot Design Award in 2010. Renowned kitchen and furniture manufacturers around the world use the minimalist complete system in their collections today.

The Vionaro drawer system has an impressive design and functionality and is very innovative. The extremely slim drawer side is fully in keeping with the trend towards minimalist forms and luxury materials through to the furniture interior.

Cubist design with track-proven movement comfortThe cubist and minimalistic Vionaro, the most radical development of the Grass designers to date, has a

Vionaro: the cubist drawer system

Design freedom for all conceivable furniture typesWith its luxurious simplicity and the use of a wide range of different materials and colours, Vionaro is ideal for all contemporary living interiors. The system is available as a high quality, anodised aluminium version as well as a steel version in the three standard colours snow white, silver grey and graphite as well as the special colour golden brown.

The Grass Vionaro is available with a 63, 89, 121 and 185 millimetre drawer side height. The front stabiliser integrated into the 185 millimetre drawer version permits use of fronts with a height of up to 780 millimetres – without the use of a railing. With this range of colours, materials and heights it satisfies the varied requirements of furniture designers and widens their horizons for individual furniture creations.

Perfect design meets perfect processabilityThe Vionaro drawer system made of aluminium or steel can be fitted onto the same concealed slide system as a wooden drawer – another great benefit for customers, who can cover completely different price segments and designs with one slide system.

Installation of the system is extremely simple, and complex machining of the drawer base panel is not necessary. In addition, the back panel clip that is pre-fitted in the drawer side guarantees an elegant connection. ●

considerable influence on the design of contemporary furniture in kitchens, bathrooms and living areas. The result of the many years of research and development work, it was awarded the coveted Red Dot Design Award in 2014 for high-quality product design.

Vionaro is based on the Dynapro slide that has proven its worth millions of times over. With Vionaro, fully seamless drawer sides made of aluminium or steel with a thickness of only 13 millimetres are placed on the Dynapro system. They are made of a single section and therefore have a completely smooth surface.

Therefore Vionaro has everything that Dynapro has: perfect running characteristics due to its synchronised movement combined with very low pull-out forces and excellent load capacities of up to 70 kg. With the Vionaro system the familiar three-dimensional adjustment option is integrated into the drawer side and can be easily actuated inside the drawer with a conventional PZ2 screwdriver.

13 millimetres – that’s all it needs for perfect design.Slender. Sleek. Flexible.

No other movement system achieves such a harmonious combination of rational and emotional aspects like Vionaro. That’s been acknowledged by the Red Dot Award, the internationally recognised seal of quality.

The slender, puristic drawer design makes a stunning impression thanks to its sleek, absolutely seamless drawer sides and premium materials. No matter whether you choose Vionaro in aluminium, in steel or wooden drawers, you will still be using the same Dynapro slide and can dispense with any complex machining of the bottom panel. The sturdy front connection allows front heights of up to 780 mm without railing systems. And the stepless side, height and tilt angle adjustment integrated into the drawer sides enables the front to be perfectly aligned.

The Sensys generation of hinges from Hettich combines front-to-back design with a feel of luxury that appeals to the emotions, adding attractive new functions to its Sensys range.

Sensys with integrated Silent SystemIn particular, the Sensys hinge scores with the automatic Silent System furniture door closure from the unusually wide angle of 35 degrees. Furniture doors that reliably close in response to a turn of the hand as well as even, gentle closing action is guaranteed in the temperature range from +5 °C to +40 °C.

Sensys wide angle hingeProviding an opening angle of 165 degrees, the Sensys wide angle hinge gives furniture doors a wide opening angle and closes them evenly and gently. Zero-protrusion hinges make it possible to fit internal drawers without spacer profiles, preventing trapped fingers no matter what position the door is in. The Sensys wide angle hinge has received both the iF Product Design Award 2014 and the Red Dot Award Product Design 2014.

Sensys thick door hingeHinges face a challenge from the movement cycles typical of profile doors and doors made of very thick material. Fitted with the new Sensys

Sensys fast assembly hinge

thick door hinge even thick furniture doors close smoothly, gently and silently, accommodating the trend towards narrowing the gap between chunky doors. The 2014 iF Product Design went to the Sensys thick door hinge.

Sensys without Silent SystemSensys has very good soft closing performance on large heavy doors and on small doors. The Sensys

hinge without Silent System is also available to make a point of difference in furniture ranges wanting to use hinges of the same look.

Sensys never fails to impress with its elegant design: The hinge and mounting plate unite to give a look of harmony. A stylish cover cap hides the fixing screws on the hinge cup and the release button for removing the hinge is invisible from the front. ●

Design & Trends

From entertaining guests to everyday dining and organisation of the family, the kitchen is the hub of activity in most Australian homes and has been enjoying a designer facelift in recent years as it becomes the focal point of the home.

Jenny O’Connell of Freedom Kitchens shares her five tips to creating an on-trend kitchen that will withstand the test of time.

1. Entertainer’s kitchenKitchens are increasingly seen as places to entertain guests. As a real centrepiece to the home, they need to be more intuitive, accessible and easy to maintain.

“We are seeing larger kitchens that consider the needs of all the users in the space,” said Jenny. “There’s more emphasis on open workspaces, multiple ovens and storage maximisation in the form of butler’s pantries.”

Jenny also suggests built-in seating areas and ‘connectivity centres’ for iPads/laptops will be popular in the year to come as the lines between living and dining continue to blur.

2. Beautiful benchtopsFreedom Kitchens has recently introduced an exciting new product to the market – the new Super Matt Black Nano benchtop.

“Imported from Italy, it is resistant not only to fingerprints, but is also able to withstand knocks and scratches, is hygienic and easy to

What’s hot in kitchens in 2015?

clean, waterproof, and resistant to dry heat and rubbing,” said Jenny. Noteworthy, she adds, is its easy-to-repair qualities – moisten the surface with a piece of damp kitchen paper, then pass over the scratch with a hot iron to repair the damage.

Caesarstone’s new Sleek Concrete is another benchtop turning heads this year. “Warm grey tones with a concrete look, this benchtop is sure to appeal to those seeking a chic finish to their kitchen or a top that complements a modern industrial style.”

3. Colour in the kitchenColour blocking is clever way to bring in multiple colours to the one space and is a clear trend in kitchens as the people become more adventurous in their designs, and look for integration between the kitchen and the rest of the home. “Designers use colour blocking to define spaces such as upper and lower cabinetry, or to highlight an island,” said Jenny.

When it comes to the most popular colour palette, Jenny said matt black, grey and warm timber grains are leading the charge.

4. Transitional kitchensWith a mixture of traditional charm and contemporary chic, transitional kitchens strike just the right balance in your home.

“Blending old with new provides a great deal of flexibility, and is an excellent choice for homeowners who don't want to confine themselves to a single style,” said Jenny. She offers the combination of profiled Shaker doors, stainless steel appliances and textured surfaces for a creative and personalised space.

5. Metallic finishesGold, brass and copper are extremely hot in kitchens right now.

“Offset by a clean look like sleek white cabinetry, classic metallic finishes add a fresh yet timeless appeal to the kitchen,” said Jenny. Look to pendant lighting for a simple, elegant touch.●

A jury of experts granted the top award in the interzum award: intelligent material and design 2015 to just nine entries to the competition. These companies faced international comparison and proved their expertise with their product innovations and refinements.

The competition is organised by Koelnmesse in co-operation with Red Dot. In 2015, it received a total of 269 entries from 21 countries. At the 2015 iF Design Award, Hailo Fitted Technology’s waste separation and organisational systems and practical kitchen aids were honoured twice in the Product Design category.

This international design award pays homage to non-kitchen products that the company added to its portfolio in early 2014: the Hailo Laundry-Carrier fitted laundry collector for utility rooms and laundry rooms and the fitted waste collector for bathroom cabinets.

Both products are characterised by their sophisticated design and added value for users and convinced the jury in terms of the assessment criteria: design quality, finish, material selection, degree of innovativeness, environmental compatibility, functionality, ergonomics, intuitive use, safety, brand value and branding along with universal design.

With its two large-capacity system baskets, the Hailo Laundry-Carrier offers sufficient space for two full washing machine loads. The containers can be simply removed using their ergonomically-shaped handles, are comfortable to carry and, above all, can be firmly positioned anywhere if not fitted to a cabinet drawer.

Hailo offers the bathroom cosmetic waste container made from sturdy white plastic in three different heights and volumes. It is available for installation in base units with doors or in existing pull-outs as well as for wall mounting. It can also be retrofitted to existing furniture with the utmost ease.

Hailo products are available through Hafele. ●

Mark Nickson Chairman of the Cabinet Makers and Designers Association recently announced that award winning interior designer, Shaynna Blaze, will be hosting the CMDA 2015 Annual Dinner and Awards Night.

Shaynna is also well known for her appearances In Selling Houses Australia and The Block. Shaynna will also be involved in the final selection of award winners.

EntriesEntries are now being received for the Australian Cabinet Maker and Designer of the Year Awards to be presented at the CMDA 2015 Annual Dinner in May.

CMDA and its predecessor CMA have been holding an awards program for many years with entries being received in a range of categories including:• Best Kitchen• Best Bathroom/Laundry• Best Built in Furniture

(Residential) • Best Commercial Project• Best Example of Free

Standing Furniture• Best Showroom Display.

Finalists and winners of the awards gain significant prestige and marketing opportunities from the recognition provided. Many finalists have commented that promoting their success in the awards has enabled them to make additional sales and create a point of difference in their marketing campaigns.

The 2014 Cabinet Maker

of the Year Winner Richard Curley, Debrich Custom Joinery said: "2014 was our first entry and we feel that it has enhanced our reputation as being one of the market leaders in providing high end custom joinery. It has drawn many questions and numerous comments from existing clients and builders. It has provided us with a platform to increase our clientele and give us greater exposure".

Additional award categoriesFollowing feedback from the 2014 judges and industry, the 2015 awards will see the introduction of Traditional/Contemporary sub-categories in each of the Best Kitchen categories and also the introduction of Best Outdoor/Alfresco Project recognising the growth in this area.

Member ratesCMDA, in recognition of the need for greater co-operation in the industry, is committed to the objectives of the Furniture Cabinet and Joinery Alliance. In line with this commitment, the CMDA Board has agreed to extend “member rates” to any financial member of the FIAA who enters the awards or attends the CMDA 2015 Annual Dinner.

As in 2014, non members of CMDA or FIAA will be able to enter the awards using the non-member entry form and also receive

additional benefits from CMDA.

Application/judging processThe awards entry process has been modified over the years to provide the judges with the information they require while limiting the time required to complete an entry. The entry form is available at www.cmda.org.au and must be submitted with a minimum of five photographs of the project.

The panel of independent judges may request additional information from the entrant or client and they reserve the option of visiting entries to select the winner. Apart from the selection of the CMDA President’s Award, no member of the CMDA Board is involved in the judging process and

all identifying information is removed from the entries prior to presentation to the judges.

CMDA Annual Dinner and Awards NightFollowing a most successful event in the Olympic Room at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2014, the 2015 event will be held in the prestigious Members Dining Room at the MCG on Friday 29 May 2015.

The event will include a three course dinner and beverages, entertainment and awards presentation. Guests may also participate in an optional tour of the MCG and museum prior to the event. Being in business is tough and it takes a lot of guts to stick it out. I have the utmost respect and admiration for anyone who can start a business, survive and thrive. One word sums up those who can make it work – confidence. Not to be confused with blind confidence or bravado, confidence is a key factor in business success.

There are many aspects of running a business and successful business owners need to have confidence in all of them.

You need to be confident in your:• product or service;• marketing and sales;• operations and finance;• human resources;• customer service.

What I would like to focus on here is Finance. In my experience this is the one that underpins everything else, because if you don’t have financial confidence, it makes it very hard to achieve much else.

1.Profit has to come first, because if your business isn’t profitable it will only be a matter of time before it fails or you run out of energy to keep treading water. In order to be profitable you need to:a. Have a plentiful and

reliable sales pipelineb. Charge the right price for

your product or servicec. Understand and closely

manage the ‘true cost’ of your offering

d. Closely manage your overheads through budgeting and reporting

2. Cash Flow is the lifeblood of your business. To have good cash flow you need to:a. Have a good

understanding of what impacts cash flow e.g.

i. time customers take to pay you;

ii. time you take to pay suppliers;

iii. time stocks sits in store waiting to be sold;

iv. time jobs are in progress prior to being invoiced;

v. the way assets are purchased e.g. with cash or borrowings;

vi. borrowings and interest;vii. shareholder funds.b. Closely manage cash flow

through forecasting, to ensure you won’t run out of cash to continue. Constant cash flow problems are probably the biggest killer of business confidence. You’re never sure if you can take advantage of opportunities. You may not know of a looming cash flow problem and take actions that make it worse, such as spending cash on items that aren’t in the budget or could have been leased or hired.

3. Time Management, because time is money. If you aren’t doing things in the most efficient and cost effective way, this can have a big impact on all aspects of business. This includes having the right people doing the right things. Particularly business owners who find themselves doing loads of stuff they probably shouldn’t

be. The ‘opportunity cost’ of a business owner’s time is a big consideration here; i.e. what else could you be doing with the time you are spending on low value work such as bookkeeping instead of speaking with customers and staff to improve things.

Some people will say: “but I enjoy the bookkeeping” or “I prefer to do it myself so I know it’s right”. If this is the case it’s vital to have someone else to do jobs like sales, marketing and HR management. If you don’t, business will dry up and there won’t be any bookkeeping to do!

Systems are the best solution to time management issues. They create an environment where others can perform tasks in a way that they can see and understand, rather than having to be micro managed. Systems help to eliminate mistakes and allow for constant improvement. Now is the easiest time ever to implement cost effective systems into just about any business, due to cloud commerce’ delivery. If your competitor has systems and you don’t, you can guarantee they are able to deliver more cost effectively and efficiently.

4. Growth Opportunities and being able to take advantage of them is vital if you want to build a business that is worth something now and in future. Many business owners have aspirations to grow a business, but fail to get the basics right, such as

ensuring it’s profitable, has good cash flow and systems to cope with growth. Trying to grow a business that is unstable and not systemised is doomed to failure. You will not be able to cope with the demands of growth if you don’t get these issues fixed first.

5. Exit Options, whilst they may seem a long way off to younger business owners, are worth considering well before exit date. Depending on how you want to exit your business, you will need to consider if it’s a business able to be handed over to others to run.

Irrespective of whether you sell or hand a business over to a successor, you will need to get the knowledge out of your head and into a system. Businesses that aren’t systemised are generally worth less than those that are. Purchasers will perform Due Diligence, which is an investigation into a business prior to buying. They will look into all aspects of the business to ensure it is a good investment and the business has a solid future and financial footing.

One of the biggest issues affecting a business value is the ability of the owner to eventually walk away and this is impacted by systems that can be understood and implemented by a new owner. ●

Interest rates at 30 year lows and getting easier to access. By Michael Ryan, Senior Finance Broker, Finlease

After 25 years in finance, if someone had told me a few years ago that a 7% interest rate was way too high I would have wondered which planet they came from. But that is the reality in today's market.

We are now seeing, on a daily basis, motor vehicles and equipment financed at interest rates between 4.5% and 5.5%.

These rates are not the concoction of dealer based "sponsored" headline rates being supported by internal discounting on a recommended retail machine price, they are main stream rates.

But what does all of this really mean in dollar terms?• A $50,000 car financed

in 2012 on a five year

by Nil residual term at 7% was $985 p/m. Today, at 5% it is $940 p/m, which is $2,500 less over the entire loan and, on a fleet of 10 cars, it adds up.

• A $500,000 machine financed in 2012 on a five year by Nil term at 7% was $9850 p/m. Now, at 4.75%, it is $9350 p/m, which is a

whopping $30,000 less over the entire loan.All things being equal

these are savings that should drop straight to the business owners’ bottom line. If you can save $10,000 a year in finance costs and your usual profit margin is 5% that is equal to adding another $200,000 in turnover to achieve the same outcome.

The number of products available to the kitchen and bathroom industry is abundant and ever increasing. When we can seek out these products with ease (on our computers, tablets and smartphones) we may find ourselves avoiding the need to actually speak with supplier representatives and missing out on the opportunity to forge positive relationships.

Good business-to-business relationships depend on strong two-way communication, and face-to-face liaison with your reps is the most effective way to build a productive relationship with your suppliers.

Whether you’re a designer, specifier, purchaser or all three together, here are five good reasons to develop a productive and positive relationship with your suppliers:

1. Problem solving, trouble shooting and product failsIf you’re not sure about a particular product application, or a product isn’t working out as planned, a good rep will help get you on track in no time. Reps know their products and, in many cases, may have come across your dilemma previously. Save time, money and worry by using their experience. And, in the unfortunate case of a product fail,when you’ve got a strong and honest relationship with your rep they’ll want to look after you and your clients – it pays to have them on your side!

2. New products and discontinued linesHave you ever had a client really excited about a particular product only to discover it’s been

discontinued? Awkward! When you’re regularly communicating with your reps you’ll be aware of new products and discontinued lines, and avoid getting yourself in those sticky situations.

3. Stock availability and stock controlIt’s the pre-Christmas rush: clients are desperate to have their project finished before Christmas, and you’re keen to have it done and dusted before you take your leave. Timing is tight but you’re getting there. Then you get the call. Stone is out of stock/veneer has six week lead time/tiles are still on the boat – aaahh!

Could regular contact and honest liaison with your supplier reps have prevented this drama? Most likely.

4. When money mattersWhat kind of pricing structure does your supplier have you on? Could you be getting a better deal on your increasing volume of products? Don’t be afraid to talk dollars with your reps – they may be able to help you increase your margins!

5. Networking and job sharingToo much work on and you need to offload a project or two; not enough work for your team or looking for a fill in job? A good rep knows more people than you do and may well be able to link you to an industry ally or two.

So, if you are looking for somewhere to meet your supplier reps face-to-face, KBDi social events could be the answer.●

Table 1 provides a ‘ball park’ indication of monthly payments on these historically low rates over various terms and residuals.

Today’s ease of finance. We now live in the world where many loans can be secured without going

through the process of lengthy finance submissions. The simple fact of being in business for two years, with a clean credit history and being a property owner, will secure an immediate approval for vehicles or most equipment up to the value of $150,000 per individual item.

Even more remarkably, this same criteria will also secure approvals on multiple assets up to $500,000 each, where they are replacing or upgrading other machines coming to the end of their existing finance, including the allowance for a 125% increase in monthly payments.

These new style of fast track facilities are provided at the historically low rates and are ideal for business owners who wish to spread their debt across a broader range of financiers without the hassle of submitting multiple complex finance applications. ●

bInside is Biesse’s annual in-house promotion.Philip Ashley reports.

The major suppliers often put on great in-house shows but this year, Biesse’s was something special. Over several weeks, the Biesse premises in Wetherill Park were transformed from a warehouse into the largest purpose-designed and built showroom in Oceania. This wasn’t just a one-off sales event: it’s a serious step towards a new phase in the Biesse story.

I was there to see it all put together and let me tell you, it’s quite a risk. As Biesse’s financial controller Dragan Dragas put it “We’re facing uncertain times both in the past and in the future but we still need to plan and grow, just like our customers.”

The new facility is a major step in Biesse’s growth plan and will be a permanent exhibition and demonstration

space for Oceania. Other state’s will keep their existing showrooms but, for your major machine expenditures, the Sydney showroom will be your preferred destination with the very latest equipment on permanent display and fully operational.

If you’re making a serious investment in equipment you expect to be able to see it in full working condition and be able to spend the time to analyse its value to your company. The new Wetherill Park facility will provide the peace-of-mind you’re looking for.

I spoke with Brand Sales Manager Massimo Mina about the issues facing Australian manufacturers. One of the major issues is low volumes. In Europe they talk about the number of standard modules in

With over 830 registrations over 3 days, we thank you for attending bInside 2015.This year’s event would not have been successful without your support.

Thank you for attending

a kitchen while here we talk about how big the kitchen is and there is no standardisation. In Europe the number of cabinets that can be made efficiently is one (cabinet) while here it needs to be batches. Massimo said: “The key to success is in analysing the efficiency of the entire production process because that’s where the margins are”.

One of the ways to maximise efficiency is with more productive machinery. Eliminating human error eliminates costs and waste. Getting the right machinery (CNC or otherwise) means the equipment is operating at its optimum output and you don’t have a machine that is

capable of producing more than your factory can handle and, as a consequence, sitting idle while everything else catches up. Maybe a beam saw and vertical drilling machine would be a better option?

With many years of production experience Massimo knows that the later you drill your holes (in panels) the more efficient your material processing and movement can be. This is because you can keep common-size panels together for longer. As (about) 40% of your cabinet components are the same size, it’s an intriguing idea and a possible alternative to nesting.

Massimo assures me that Biesse is in the business of providing solutions – not just selling machines. To ensure that you get the best advice there is are product specialists (brand sales managers) able to offer premium advice about the machine and production type you are looking for. These people are specialists in their field with high technical expertise and can tailor the right solution for any particular need, even if that advice leads to your buying a cheaper machine.

And the advice also extends to other aspects of your production, not just the machine. Remember that machining time is rarely a variable – it’s the assembly that you can often improve.

The right solution is a product of global experience. Whatever you are planning to do, chances are it has been done somewhere else in the world. This experience is available to Biesse product specialists so you get the value of Biesse’s global experience.

There are many Italians in the Biesse Oceania sales team because Biesse CEO Luke Tenaglia has put together the most experienced people available. Biesse’s mission is the same as their customers – to make the right decisions and be profitable. This amounts to added value for Biesse customers as technical benefits improve their customers’ bottom line.

Luke sees the local industry workforce as (somewhat) transient and Biesse machinery is designed so less-experienced workers can become very efficient is a remarkably short time. This is, in part, due to Biesse’s new range of intuitive software.

With all good business deals, it’s all about “return from investment”. Put more simply, “you get what you pay for”.

With Biesse you are paying not only for the machine but technical know-how – experience, performance, service and technology.

To be profitable means having the right equipment. Your materials and labour costs are probably as good as you can get. Your profits are in reducing waste and power use, and the efficiency of your production. As you move into ever-more high-tech production, your choice of machinery becomes an increasingly critical factor.

Biesse has invested heavily in eco-manufacturing and, as the cost of Biesse’s own production (and machines) comes down, so will their customers’ manufacturing costs.

The latest example on display at bInside was the Biesse (Viet) sanding machines now saving 30% off power costs. HP (high performance) technology electronic sanding pads improve the surface finish and energy regeneration is now available as an option.

Biesse has the latest zero-join edge banding and, on display at bInside, was not just one but three Airforce machines equipped with this new technology. This is one of the risks we spoke about earlier, but Biesse is certain that the “fear factor” will wear off and zero-join edge banding will eventually become the norm.

Biesse edge banders on display were fitted with brushless motors and the corner rounding units had available an 8-position tool change for your various corner rounding profiles.

“Nover was very pleased to be invited to be part of Biesse’s fantastic bInside event. This was an excellent opportunity for industry partners to come together and celebrate the transformation of Biesse’s premises into a showroom, exhibition and demonstration centre as well as a great chance to network with industry peers. “Overall the show was a fantastic collaboration and great experience. Nover is grateful to Biesse and Rehau for the chance to attend and it was a pleasure to be involved in such a well organised and successful. We encourage customers to visit the impressive new BIESSE space in Wetherill Park.” Daniella Laurenzi, Nover.

Product storage and retrieval systems are very efficient at storing and moving your materials. Biesse Winstore is now customisable for individual needs. It’s possible to feed material to a beam saw AND any number of other machines from the one system.

And finally, the new Rover B 5-axis machine on display was fitted with a separate (optional) multi-function unit because research has proved that constantly changing tools in the single 5-axis spindle for your most-used processing is one of your biggest time losers.

Manufacturing

The unit holds your most-used cutting tool.

bInside’s numbers were impressive – 830 registrations plus walk-ins (double the expected numbers); 100 tonnes of machinery on display; the largest (permanent) showroom in Oceania with 27 machines including four new releases, and 13 partner companies catering for all your manufacturing needs, making this event truly industry-focussed.

In addition to the local numbers, would it surprise you to know that Biesse has recently invested 14 million Euro’s (just under AUD$20 million) on research and development? Biesse’s orders doubled last year and Luke kept pace by increasing his sales and service staff by 40%. Spare parts were also increased and upwards of

$5 million (retail) value of parts are now kept in stock.

bInside was the “bread and butter” for the Australian and New Zealand market. CEO Luke Tenaglia said that bInside was designed with a 3-fold target. The show was the priority, followed by maintaining the facility as an on-going factory display.

The third target is to utilise the facility as a training centre, not just for customers but to support the ailing TAFE system. And Luke got off to a great start with a TAFE student tour during bInside.

Putting all the pieces together is a costly and risky undertaking but one that Luke and his team see as invaluable to support the Australian timber and furniture industries. For Biesse, it’s a risk worth taking. ●

“What we believe and conceive we can achieve .. with Biesse” – Tim Scarce, Noosa furniture designer

As an aircraft engineer, designs and concepts were always buzzing around inside the mind of Tim Scarce.

While working with companies such as Boeing and Qantas, he started making tables, chairs and surfboards as a hobby, eventually channeling this energy into full-time furniture manufacture at Green Cathedral Bespoke Furniture, which he runs with his wife, Sally, at their busy and colourful Noosa studio on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

“It’s a dream realised,” said Tim who, at the age of 10, was inspired by a furniture restoration class he attended with his mother.

In 2009, and for the next four years, he worked exclusively for famous interior design houses custom

building one-off pieces.When Sally joined her

husband in the business full time, she discovered Tim’s personal style was very different. About three years ago, Sally ‘bought’ Tim’s time for two weeks with the directive: “Make me something that I can sell”.

The very next day Tim had made the now-popular Babanees stool and the following day Sally had it selling in a local store in fashionable Hastings Street, Noosa. Shortly after, the stools were going gangbusters on the chic Melbourne furniture scene.

Green Cathedral soon expanded, but it became hard for production to keep up with demand.

Enter the high-performance Biesse Rover Gold with C axis.

Cream on the cake

“Boy, did that smarten up production,” Sally said. “A lot of products were being hand-produced; each item would take about 30 minutes to finish in a rough form. Now with the Rover Gold, we can turn them out in about 90 seconds!

“In fact, a production line that previously took 10 to15 hours to assemble now goes through to complete finish on the Biesse machine in about 90 minutes.”

Sally admits that at first she was skeptical about the Rover Gold’s capacity and ability to ‘read’ and produce the furniture designs that were constantly changing and shaping in her husband’s mind.

“But with Tim’s engineering skills and the advice from the Biesse team it worked for us, giving speed and consistency along the production line,” she said.

“What was believable and conceivable became achievable with Biesse,” said Tim who became fascinated with the CNC machine.

“It broadened our range and responded to the configurations of our program, combining the high-performance skills of a mobile working table with the precision and stability of the gantry structure.”

The Rover Gold’s 16-position revolving tool changer, drilling head (16 vertical and eight horizontal) and 18 rotatable sliding bases that follow the shape of any finished part clamped on the machine appealed to the clever engineer.

Green Cathedral works with American oak (a mixture of Quercus species), Tasmanian oak (Eucalyptus regnans), certified hardwood plywoods and MDF. Trials will soon start on creating furniture shapes from thermoplastics.

Today, Tim and Sally employ four full-time staff in a dedicated factory and a separate design gallery – two furniture makers, an upholsterer and a showroom manager – all a far cry from their beginnings in a backyard shed.

Furniture items such as the Babanees range of benches, tables, floor lamps and bookshelves, and the Archie range, which includes Australia’s first glow-in-the-dark children’s bed, have been scooped up by furniture outlets in five states.

“The cream on the cake for us this year was our inclusion in Biesse’s Hall of Fame in Sydney,” Sally said.

“Now, that’s appreciation.” ●

A huge order worth 15 million Euros, the inauguration of the new Kuala Lumpur branch and participation in Interzum Guangzhou: once again SCM is interacting successfully with manufacturers the world over – China and Asia included.

Obtaining success on all the markets of the world: a privilege for an industrial group that designs and produces technologies to meet the needs of both large-scale companies and the smallest artisan workshop. Worldwide, interacting with a variety of cultures and requirements.

This is the key to the commitment SCM Group

has demonstrated and the success it has obtained in China and all across Asia. A notable order worth 15 million Euros has recently been signed with a large Chinese industrial group – turnkey systems (highly automated lines, but also traditional machines) that will be installed in three production units–one for furniture making, another for constructing hollow-core doors, and the third for the painting processes.

“And it was precisely our versatility and thorough knowledge of every process, our ability to offer our customers the most advanced production lines and yet, at the same time, more

traditional technologies, that won us this major contract,” said Marco Rampichini, SCM Group manager for Asia and Oceania. “Not forgetting the quality of our service: 35 technicians who know every SCM Group solution inside out".

Presence in ChinaThe presence of SCM Group on the Chinese market dates back to 2004 in Shenzhen, the headquarters and logistics/production site where 65 people are now employed. It's there that a range of processing centres specifically designed for the Chinese market are produced in a plant that doubled its size in 2014.

In Shunde (near Guangzhou) and Beijing, SCM Group has showrooms and sales offices covering the other areas of this great country.

New premises in MalaysiaThe new Kuala Lumpur site in Malaysia sits alongside the Singapore offices and various sites in China for a local market interested in SCM solutions for small and medium-sized companies. Machines like the Tech Z2 entry level processing centre, the Cyflex vertical borer, the Olimpic K560 edgebanding machine, and the Pratika processing centre with nesting table.●

Large or small, batch size 1 or mass production: Holzma will be setting new benchmarks at Ligna in May.

Greater speed, flexibility and efficiency: requirements in the woodworking industry have increased considerably over recent years. At Ligna 2015, Holzma will be showing how innovative panel cutting solutions for every performance category, in both craft sector and industry, can meet these requirements without compromising on quality or economic viability.

Efficient processes are indispensable for success in the woodworking sector – and the Holzma HPP 130 now provides these from the very first cut. This new saw comes equipped with everything aspiring craft businesses need to cut single panels and small

batches. Its motto is quite simply "plug and saw". The HPP 130 costs little more than a conventional table circular saw but deals with cutting jobs to a high level of precision and with great efficiency.

Maximum precision and performance with minimum space requirement has long been the watchword of the 2 series. Holzma has further improved this popular range of models ready for this year's Ligna fair. The main objective is to offer customers far greater flexibility in configuring the machines.

Top trends: batch size 1 and automation

Companies are having to improve their value-added processes on an ongoing basis in order to increase their competitiveness. Automation is one of the most effective

levers in this respect because it acts where the production process can quickly become expensive, i.e. on the use of the resources of time, material, energy and personnel.

Holzma will be showcasing numerous new developments that will allow wastage in these areas to be further reduced by means of systematic automation.

Batch size 1 and automation are, therefore, not a contradiction in terms but rather two trends that must consistently be taken into account during development. This is precisely where the focus of Holzma will lie at Ligna when its intelligently linked production solutions that feature a high level of organisation and a wide range of processing options are displayed.

Both are essential for dealing with ever-decreasing batch sizes. As the trend towards customised production grows, so does the number of cutting patterns and materials that have to be managed and processed. This can only be dealt with efficiently if there is a smooth flow of information and material – from the digital control system to the machining and handling systems.

With combiTec, Holzma is offering a special recut option for batch size 1 manufacturing. This innovation allows recuts to be completed straight away during the regular cutting process. This saves time and money because the operator is able to reduce the time involved in handling, his material usage and the amount of waste incurred. ●

Boere is a leading European company providing sanding solutions. Whether it’s the calibrating of solid wood or finishing of filmy veneer, Boere understands its customers’ wishes and translates them into perfectly

manufactured machines. And this not only goes for the processing of wood but also for special materials such as plastics, composites, insulation materials, imitation teak decks, HPL, rubber or fibre cement.

Boere’s sanding machine for denibbing This past year Boere developed a method enabling a furniture maker to reach a high-quality high-gloss finish – a sanding machine has been developed costing 60% less than the usual sanding machines for denibbing. Now this high-gloss finishing machine is within the reach of the small to medium-sized furniture maker or shopfitter. Boere will show the results at the Ligna.

Boere will show the renewed texturing brush machine Select X-Line.

Structure, character, depth and a rustic appeal of wood are still the aspects very much in demand within the flooring and furniture industry. Thanks to the oscillating brush system the wood grain will be smoothly followed resulting in a stripeless and soft feeling finish. When first the X-Line units sands across the grain, the surface will be given a sawcut or scarved look resulting in a very powerful and distinctive structure.

Boere remains a specialist in delivering custom-made wide belt sanding machines which are fully adapted to the customer. ●

Software

One of the most important decisions for any joinery business is the choice of CAD/CAM software. It is the brain that powers both design and production and can be a key factor in the success of your business.

To be competitive in today’s market, especially manufacturing, you must be conversant with the latest technology that is available to assist your business, including software. As more and more software solutions enter the market, the choices become overwhelming and it is difficult to wade through the oversupply of information to reach the right solution for your business.

As each business is unique you need to conduct your research on three key levels;1. software functionality,2. developer credentials,3. reseller credentials.

Remember you are not just buying a software product, you are buying into a long term relationship with both the developer and reseller of the software. So it needs to be a good fit for your business on all levels.

Software functionalityEvery business has different needs when it comes to the functionality of the software. A few of the factors to be considered are: type of joinery designed/produced; construction methods used; type of machinery connecting to and budget.

This is the hardest step in the process and thorough research needs to be undertaken. List what you need from the software as a starting point including where your current software is not meeting your needs and any parts of your process that need improving. If you formulate this as a checklist you can rate

solutions and find the one that best fits your needs.

As a starting point it is possible to assign broad categories to software that tend to fit to different market niches:• Library based solutions: these are a drag and drop style solutions, which are likely to fit better with businesses that work with standard joinery of set dimensions and styles

such as window, door, wardrobe manufacturers as well as standard kitchen manufacturers. These solutions are generally an entry point for businesses and are priced accordingly.

If this type of solution meets your needs ensure that the library of units offered is suitable for your business as it is may not be possible to work outside the provided library.• True 3D solutions: these allow you to draw joinery items from scratch. They may come with a library of units but their strength is freedom of design. They allow the user to draw complex or curved shapes and thus are

the solution of choice for commercial, shopfitting and custom joinery businesses.

There are vast differences in the solutions on offer in this category so be sure to follow a stringent process and ask the tough questions. Some of the questions you may want to ask are:• is it designed specifically

for the joinery industry;• does it have in built

joinery functionality;• is it an integrated solution; • do you need additional

software to run to machine;

• are all dimensions fully parametric;

• how easily can you make changes to existing models, especially complex or curved designs;

• can you set up your own library units;

• does it offer advanced shop drawing functionality creating dimensions, sections, detailed views;

• can you amend the model from the shop drawing interface;

• does it support a wide range of import and export formats, both 2D and 3D, to communicate efficiently with your business partners;

• does it understand production and support an efficient setout process that reduces double handling;

• is machining visual, with full production information attached;

Guide to buying CAD/CAM softwareOne of the most important decisions for any joinery business is the choice of CAD/CAM software. It is the brain that powers both design and production and can be a key factor in the success of your business.By Anne Charlton, Marketing Manager, Integrated Joinery Solutions

“Remember you are not just buying a software product, you are buying into a long term relationship with both the developer and reseller of the software. So it needs to be a good fit for your business on all levels.”

Caters for range of production methods

Developed by Missler, a global company with 30+ years experience

• does it cater for your chosen construction method;

• can you alter the construction method;

• can you customise the toolbar;

• does it have other modules that may be useful to your business such as quoting.

Developer credentialsIt is vital that your software has a secure future to ensure that you gain a return on your investment. You need to research who is behind the development of the software and ensure they are a good fit for you. You cannot afford to invest in a solution that does not have the backing of a strong development company behind it. Below are some key questions to ask:• what is the developer’s

annual revenue;• how many years have

they been developing software;

• how many employees do they have;

• how many full-time programmers work on the solution;

• what is their business philosophy and does this fit with your goals;

• how many resellers do they have in their network;

• what percentage of annual turnover is allocated to annual product development;

• what percentage of their workforce is allocated to annual product development;

• do they have a structured approach to product upgrades.If they are a small

developer then you need to ask some tough questions to ensure that the solution has a long term future.

You also need to know exactly how many developers they have working full-time on the software, how they plan to address a key member of the development team leaving and what their plans are for business succession.

The industry has seen businesses being stuck with outdated software due to small development companies closing down or not having the resources to keep pace with industry needs and advancements in technology.

Reseller credentialsThe local reseller of the software will be your main contact point. Purchasing the software is just the beginning – you will work closely with the local reseller and must establish a close business relationship that can be maintained over many years.

You are looking for a professional business that can work alongside your business to embed the software and provide ongoing technical support. Some key points to consider here are:

• are they joinery specialists that understand your business;

• how many years experience do they have;

• do they just sell the software or do they support it too;

• how many in-house employees do they have;

• what is the ratio of sales to support staff;

• is support provided by the reseller or is it outsourced to another company or even overseas;

• is support provided by local joinery qualified technicians;

• do they offer a range of after sale services to assist your business such as setout, library building and consulting.●

Software

The last 30 years has seen massive advancement in technology compared to the previous 150 years. Personal computers have become a huge part of how we navigate life everyday. You may question this but if you own a smartphone then without even realising it you are carrying a personal computer. Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007 the world as we knew it changed forever.

So how quickly is technology advancing?Consider these facts:1. The internet did not exist

25 years ago.2. Google did not exist 11

years ago.3. The smartphone and the

tablet did not exist nine years ago.There is no job that

has remained unaffected by information and communication technology (ICT). Technologies have a profound influence on society and society has a huge impact on industry. Society creates the demand for new inventions as entrepreneurs see the possibilities and create devices or programs (Apps), which meet the demand. Quite often society does not even know it needs something until it experiences it, then they can't live without it.

Since the year 2000, in the area of communication technologies, these have been the most dramatic changes that have affected every Australian life:

1. digitalisation – analogue forms of the media have been digitalised (phones and tvs);

2. less hardware – more software: hardware is being replaced by software. (cloud software, apps on smartphones);

3. higher bandwidth (faster internet) – 14.72 million Australians had access to the internet in their home in June 2014;

4. internet usage – 77% of online Australians banked or paid a bill online and 69% used social networking.

Australia has shown itself to have a huge appetite for the internet.

“Consumers are doing more over the internet, using more devices and accessing more online services,” said ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman. “Growth in these areas is posing both opportunities and challenges for traditional industry revenue streams.”

One of these traditional industries is the fixed landline telephone, which would seem to be heading the same direction as the Dodo bird. Fixed lined connections are on the decline – 51% of the 25 to 34 year old age category are now mobile only, they do not have a fixed lined phone.

So what drives invention and innovation? Is it convenience? Is it the challenge of finding a better way? If you look at most inventions from back in history they were based on making something better, quicker, smarter, easier. No invention ever intentionally tried to make the process more difficult.

Some may argue that technology advancement

has not always been a great idea for business: think of the horse and cart industry when the car industry took off. Not too many people who could afford a car were striving to purchase the latest cart. So, as one industry starts its demise another starts to boom. There are many examples of once thriving companies who were brought undone by technology. Think, Polaroid, liquid paper, Kodak 35mm photography film, tape deck, vinyl records and, of course, the analogue phone and TV.

The Digital AgeThe digital age is well and truly upon us and you should ignore it at your own peril. Computers have contributed to the downfall of many traditional industries but they have also been attributed to creating more jobs and new industries in the last 100 years than any other.

So why are computers feared by such a large contingent of the work force? Why are so many industries

scared of technology? Computers have certainly, in the past, been used to replace a task once performed by a human, but computers are tools and really are assistants to humans rather then replacing humans.

Looking at professions such as cabinet makers and builders it is interesting to observe the divide between businesses that embrace technology against those which have clung to the status quo. For starters, cabinet makers and builders, who have invested time in AutoCad and 3D render programs such as KD Max, have the ability to used software that makes not only designing but also the selling of their ideas to potential clients so much easier. Let’s face it, most people can't visualise so if you can show them what their house or kitchen design will look like before it is actually built it takes the guess work, assumptions and a multitude of problems out of the equation.

The times they are a’changing

Pytha Lab is a German software company developing and distributing Pytha – a 3D CAD software. It is amongst the leading systems in exhibition design, show design, store construction, interior design and woodworking. The new version V22 provides numerous innovations by which the Pytha’s Smart Parametrics should be emphasised.

With parameterised parts it is easy to quickly modify a construction. Normally

with CAD systems you have to make time-consuming preparations that require intensive knowledge of the respective CAD system. With the new Pytha version V22 this is different:

• You first model your scene or parts as usual. With the intelligent scene analysis integrated in the new PYTHA Smart Parametrics you can now modify your construction as quick as lightning and change the lengths and radii for single or multiple parts. You can furthermore adjust

the number of shelves and sides within a cabinet at the click of a button.

Changes RadiusThe feature Change radius has now become a powerful tool. Up to now could only change one radius at a time. With a small settings dialogue you can now decide if other radii that lie on the same axis also need to be taken into account. You can do this for all radii of a single part or for all parts along the axis. ●

Pytha’s smart parametricsFor businesses that are not afraid of computers and software the decision is easy, but what becomes of the businesses that avoid computers and long for the past when everything was so much simpler (and that's a discussion for another day). If history is anything to learn from, which it is, they will struggle to compete with their more savvy and technologically advanced competitors. There will always be a place for traditional cabinet making and building skills, but the market is shrinking and the demand is falling.

As younger cabinet makers and builders decide to start their own businesses they will not suffer from computer phobia, they will see computers and software as an integral part of the business and essential to their success. It also must be noted that computers have never been and never will be a substitute for great customer service.

Software such as goCabinets, a cloud based online ordering and quoting system, is allowing young cabinet makers to start their business on a shoestring budget without sacrificing quality.

There will always be people who bemoan technology because it requires more education and time to learn it. But if they stopped and looked at the time saving, the improved productivity the new technology would bring, they would quickly realise the time they invested in learning the technology would pay dividends in the future. ●

Laminex has introduced four new decors to its Silk Finish range showcasing warm timber tones paired with a gloss finish to reflect the lustrous design trends shaping the landscape in 2015.

Domain, Burnished Wood, Jericho and Sublime Teak offer the natural appearance of woodgrains in a smooth melamine finish.

Laminex Marketing Manager, Joanna Baker said the new decors respond to growing interest in more subtle gloss finishes for use in retail fit outs, boutique hotels or commercial developments.

“A warm palette of timber grains combined with an elegant gloss finish are increasing in popularity. Part of the allure of a gloss surface is that it generates contrast, particularly when used in conjunction with timber tones and textures.

“Silk Finish is easy to clean, making it perfect for creating invigorating and inspiring interiors,” said Baker.

Introduced specifically for Australian interiors, the contemporary new additions

bring the total Laminex Silk Finish offering to 27 decors. Each decor in the range comes with matching gloss ABS edging for effortless finish for doors, drawers, cabinetry and other vertical surfaces.

For a rich dark woodgrain option, Domain offers a blended balance between popular dark shades of browns, greys and blacks, while Burnished Wood delivers a deep charcoal colouring for an ebony effect with grey undertones. Lighter colour options are achieved with Jericho or Sublime Teak. Jericho displays soft brown-grey tones, while Sublime Teak incorporates muted honey tones. ●
