Apple’s New Supply Chain Hits Samsung Hard According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has been expanding its supply chain operations to collaborate with companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce components for its iPhone and iPad devices. With supply chain diversification benefiting Apple (despite some initial mixed results), reports say that the company’s move is taking a bite out of rival Samsung’s bottom line.

Due to Apple’s new strategy, analysts estimate that Samsung’s chip-making business is expected to have an operating loss of 877bn won this year, compared to an operating profit of 203bn won in 2013.

Since 2007, Samsung has enjoyed the coveted position of being the only manufacturer of Apple’s Ax series of processors as well as their predecessors. However, after several years of negotiations and technical work as the popularity of Apple’s iOS devices soared, Apple brought TSMC on board to produce A-series chips for the next generation of devices. This transition away from Samsung as the sole supplier of the main chip for iOS devices is cutting into the Korean company’s logic chip business.

Will Samsung still be able to stay ahead of the game, or is this just the start of the company’s gradual decline?

Shipping Costs No.1 Online Shopping Pet Peeve

Among US Internet users surveyed who had at least one digital shopping pet peeve, 66 per cent of them cited shipping costs, according to a recent study by Harris Interactive. Getting an item that did not look like it did online came second, according to 38 per cent of respondents.

Interestingly, millennial web users, often considered frugal, were the age group least likely to care about shipping costs.

Generally, most respondents would rather save their money than spend more to get their items instantly, with 70 per cent declaring that they would not pay more for same-day or overnight delivery when shopping digitally.

Online shoppers in Asia may be less picky about shipping costs. A survey by UPS Pulse of the Online Shopper states 45 per cent of its respondents cite high shipping costs as a reason for cart abandonment, a marginally lower number compared to their US counterparts despite the different sample sizes.

Gartner Names Top 10 Industrial Supply Chains

After announcing the core top 25 supply chains list in May, Gartner has now released its top 10 “industrial manufacturing” supply chains list.

Developed using the same methodology as its overall top 25, Gartner uses three pieces of financial data: Return on Assets (ROA), inventory turns, and revenue growth. ROA and revenue are based on three-year averages. The total weighting for the three financial areas are 25 per cent, 15 per cent, and 10 per cent respectively.

Although this approach does not really consider the different characteristics of various industry sectors, where metrics such as inventory turns and return on assets can vary dramatically, there is certainly some merit in breaking out separate lists for different sectors.

Just three companies Gartner classifies as leading industrial manufacturers made the overall top 25 supply chain list this year, and all somewhat near the bottom of that list: Caterpillar (#18), 3M: (#19), and Cummins (#23).

Gartner’s lists have received some flak from the industry, but they are still one of the many benchmarks showing how well a company is performing.

Asia Pushes Green Garments Ahead

With Asia being the world’s textile and clothing workshop, it remains the heart of the industry’s sustainability initiatives. With the recent collapse of Rana Plaza last year, multiple ‘green’ initiatives are

underway in Bangladesh’s garment and textile sector.

Ultimate Challenge: Bangladesh’s history of struggling with environmental standards (e.g. 700 washing and dyeing plants operate without waste water treatment plants)

Customers Stop Buying After Fast Food Meat ScandalMcDonald’s Corp. said that the recent meat scandal of one of its suppliers has affected Asian markets, like China and Japan, which accounted for more than 10 per cent of the company’s venue.

The meat scandal was exposed when a Chinese TV reported that McDonald’s Chinese meat supplier, Shanghai Husi Food Co., was using rotting meat. Yum Brands suffered a similar scandal in 2012, and is still working on restoring its reputation two years later.

With Japanese outlets scrambling to minimise the damage, restaurants in Japan are turning to time-honoured Asian soul food - tofu. The fast food giant’s more than 3,000 restaurants in Japan started selling “Tofu Shinjo” nuggets modelled on a traditional side dish that meshes tofu, vegetables and fish. This is expected to be a temporary solution while the company cleans up its back-end mess.

The company sells more than

75 hamburgers every

second.

Many emerging markets have growing populations to match their burgeoning economies. But while their economies and their appetites are growing, all too often the infrastructure of their food supply chain is not.

In India, the situation is particularly bleak. Due to India’s scarce temperature-controlled storage facilities, only two per cent of the fruit and vegetables produced there are stored in temperature-controlled environments.

Unfortunately, the problem extends well beyond highly perishable fresh foods. In fact, the inadequacy of much of India’s warehousing provision means that the country struggles to properly store wheat and grain produce too. Analysts claim that the losses incurred from food waste in the country amount to Rs440bn (US$7.3bn) each year.

India has received plenty of interest from investors, but the government needs to do more to break down the walls and encourage global companies to boost its supply chain industry.
