W E L L H E R E W E A R E , presenting you with the

fourth monthly edition of Supply Chain Digital of

2015 already. It may be April, but there are no fools

in this issue. Our front cover feature showcases

Walmart, the largest retailer in the world and

employer of a staggering two million people across

the world. You may know them as Asda, Seiyu or

Best Price…but Walmart is everywhere in some

shape or form and it has just recently announced

the debut of its Sustainability Leaders shop, an

online shopping portal on Walmart.com that

helps customers identify and purchase products

from suppliers that are leading in sustainability.

We also have an interesting story on how a

cacophony of human rights organisations and

NGO’s are coming together to increase standards

in the palm oil supply chain, and with corporate

social responsibility a big focus currently;

organisations have a vested interest in this topic.

We also have a nifty Top 10 on the best

undergraduate courses in supply chain

management in the United States.

Enjoy the read!

Now, as part of the Sustainability

The Sustainability Leaders shop

takes information from the Index

and translates it into an easy-to-

customers. Products displayed with a

badge indicate that their manufacturer

ranks as best in class among other

suppliers in that product category,

based on their responses to detailed

category surveys developed by TSC.

The badge symbolises that the

manufacturer of a particular product is

ranked highest among its peers within

its category; or in categories where

there are many leading manufacturers,

products made by any manufacturer

that scores over 80 percent, will also

qualify for a badge.

Although the badge isn’t specific to

the individual product’s environmental

or social impact, the manufacturer and

category level approach is intended

to help customers identify companies

leading in sustainability.

Unprecedented coalition of human rights and environmental groups release

recommendations for companies to eradicate labour abuses in the supply chain

THE GROWING GLOBAL demand

for palm oil has contributed to

systemic human rights abuses of

workers, including children, and

requires stronger labour protections

throughout the industry’s supply chain.

Now, an unprecedented and

diverse alliance of international

human rights and environmental

organisations released Free and

Fair Labor in Palm Oil Production:

Principles and Implementation

Guidance. This guide is the first of

its kind and details comprehensive

recommendations to implement fair

labour practices in the palm oil sector.

Glorene Das, Executive Director

of Tenaganita, a Malaysian NGO that

campaigns for the rights of migrant

workers, labourers and women,

said: “Malaysia’s palm oil industry is

heavily dependent upon the labour

of migrant workers, but many of

these workers fall prey to serious

exploitation at the hands of their

employers or recruitment agencies.

“Palm oil growers and government

must work to bring the industry

working standards in line with Free and

Fair Labour Principles for all workers,

including the most vulnerable. They

can begin with reforming common

industry practices like unethical

recruitment, withholding of identity

documents, and low wages that put

workers at undue risk of forced labour

and, at the same time ensure that child

labour is excluded from the industry.”

In less than two decades palm oil

production has quintupled, making

it the most widely traded and used

edible vegetable oil; it is now found

in one of every two products sold

in Western grocery stores. Roughly

85 percent of palm oil is grown in

Malaysia and Indonesia, employing

3.5 million workers in the region.

To keep up with the rising demand

and competitive global commodity

prices, the industry has relied on

keeping labour costs low. Extreme

labour abuses, including use of

forced and child labor, have

Herwin Nasution, longtime

the exploitation and unfair treatment

of palm oil laborers in Indonesia.

Many global companies have already committed to sourcing responsible palm oil

we call on all palm oil producers, their

buyers, and investors to adopt and

implement the Fair Labour Principles.”

Many companies have already

committed to sourcing responsible

palm oil by the end of 2015 out of

concern for controversies taking

place in their supply chains. As their

deadline quickly approaches, the

outlined recommendations offer

a detailed set of guidelines to help

companies, consumer brands,

investors and stakeholders reach

those commitments by eliminating

forced labor and exploitation in

their supply chains and improving

the rights and wages of workers.

Practices associated with forced

labour in the industry have included

debt bondage, confiscation of

passports, physical confinement,

withholding of wages, false terms

of employment and threats of

physical and sexual violence.

Lucia von Reusner, shareholder

advocate for Green Century Capital

Management, which manages

responsible and diversified fossil

fuel-free mutual funds, commented:

“Globally respected companies

increasingly recognise that the

use of forced and child labour to

produce key ingredients like palm

oil is an unacceptable business

practice that risks damaging their

brand and shareholder value.

“The Fair Labour Principles outline what palm oil companies must do to uphold the rights of plantation labourers who have been abused too often by the state and their employers.

The principles and guidelines were

based on the International Labour

Organisation’s core conventions

and the UN Guiding Principles

on Business and Human Rights.

Among the recommendations:

• Eliminate all forms of forced

or compulsory labour

• Abolish the worst forms

of child labour

• Respect freedom of association and

the right to collective bargaining;

• Provide adequate protective

equipment free of cost

• Provide adequate housing,

water, medical, educational

and welfare amenities

• Ban all highly hazardous pesticides

including persistent, carcinogenic

and endocrine disrupting pesticides

• Commit to reasonable working

hours and progress toward

payment of a living wage;

• Practice ethical recruitment with

no fees for workers or seizure

of identity documents;

• Establish a legitimate, accessible,

and transparent grievance

mechanism, consistent with

the UN Guiding Principles on

Business and Human Rights; and

• Commit to meaningful

transparency and disclosure

of all plantation processes.

Here at Supply Chain Digital we are always seeking out news and statistics that we think will be interesting to our c-level readers involved in supply chain management, logistics and so on.As it happens, I recently read an independent study from Software Advice, a supply chain management software advisory firm, who ranked the top undergraduate and postgraduate programs for supply chain

technology education. This technology ranking was calculated through a scoring system created by the company’s supply chain expert, Forrest

Burnson, which was based on data collected from course descriptions, program curriculums and course syllabi on university websites. The final rankings are as follows (see opposite page):

So, why were these programs the best of the best? According to Burnson it was because, “these supply chain management programs give students the flexibility to really explore the technological side of supply

basic concepts these programs give students an opportunity to hone their skills in niche fields through the integration of engineering and IT courses.

Thanks to these electives students are given the opportunity to gain valuable experience with software that is used heavily in the industry.

becoming an increasingly important part of the supply chain professional’s toolkit.

Perhaps surprisingly of the top 15 undergraduate SCM programs, just four offer a class devoted to learning an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. It is not any better in the graduate programs, with only one the top SCM graduate programs offering a class devoted to learning a commercial ERP platform.

When asked what common themes he saw in the top programs on both the

undergraduate and graduate level, Burnson said:

“The best universities on our list tended to offer a wide variety of required and elective courses, from database management to software engineering to geographic information systems to enterprise resource planning and so on.

quality universities are investing the necessary time and resources to create high caliber programs dedicated to educating the supply chain workers of tomorrow.

Although, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that schools are ramping up their supply chain programs since degrees in SCM are becoming more appealing to prospective students. These top ranked programs understand in order to win over these students they need to offer more than a basic education in SCM. They know students want to attend a university or college that will help them become technologically advanced so employers will see them as a cost effective asset upon graduation.

With this in mind, it would benefit any person interested in a Bachelor’s or Master’s in SCM to read this study in its entirety to understand which program is right for them before committing to a school.

To read the full report, click here.

“ERP is especially critical, and so the forward-thinking universities that offer or require a full class to teaching an ERP platform performed especially well on our ranking. The universities that didn’t perform as well tended to have more limited curricula and fewer course offerings, with less of an emphasis on software and technology.

“That’s not to say they don’t otherwise offer a good SCM education; just that the top-performing universities are on the cutting edge in seeing supply chain management more fundamentally as a STEM field of study than a traditional business management field of study.”

With industry experts forecasting a talent gap for supply chain professionals, it should calm the nerves of many to know high

But ultimately, we need to ensure they all have quick and easy access to products through our supply chain and can pass the time and cost savings onto their customers. It comes down to understanding and working with the different business units, listening to what they and their customers are asking for, having an interpretation of what that might look like in five years’ time and evaluating the investment required to enable us to deliver that.”

well as an array of other business services.

Company evolutionRecently the company came to a crossroads in its development as a result of being at full occupancy at the BIW site. It could either build more facilities or start to develop its project more as a franchise concept, and the organisation took the latter option.

Al Arrayed said: “Majaal now offers services to lease, develop and operate warehouses for third parties. We’re leveraging our experience and success in our own project and are now offering turnkey solutions for clients as a third party agent.

landowner and investment company called Al Mazaya Holdings, we are developing and operating warehouses on their behalf; adding another 22,000 square metres on our portfolio of warehouses under management. We will act as facilities and leasing managers on their recently completed $20 million industrial site.

“We’ve been able to add a new revenue stream on top of the rental income with the service income. It has allowed us to expand without the heavy capital expenditure that comes with land acquisition.

“We think it’s a very prudent way of expanding across the GCC. This is how we envision growing our brand and undertaking projects outside of Bahrain.”

Effectively growing by a third in size as a result of contracts signed is something that would not be possible at the same speed if Majaal were to acquire and build on its own land. Al Arrayed sees the firm’s chosen method as a very scalable and successful business model which he hopes will allow it to gain an international presence.

As part of the wider remit, Majaal took part in the Gulf Industrial Fair in Bahrain and this provided the opportunity to not only announce it had signed with Al Mazaya but that it is eager to take on other such mandates.

Al Arrayed added: “We have actively marketed and introduced ourselves to industrial landowners from further afield. Our business model allows us to get into other markets without significant equity

risks and that’s always been a consideration when looking at Saudi, Oman and other countries in the GCC. We have already registered Majaal as a trademark in these territories. We are able to be more flexible going forward and can expand with ease; we are in a prime position at the moment.”

has become a key tool in the business and leveraging the correct systems to the company’s advantage is another standout feature.

AL Arrayed concluded: “I truly believe we can go from a $50m company to doubling size over a relatively short period of time thanks to the processes we have in place. We have invested quite heavily in IT platforms, such as customer relationship management (CRM) systems, that allow us to manage 50, 500 or even 5,000 tenants and their requirements, messages and payments.

“Having an automated system that alerts you on overdue issues is invaluable and keeps us on top of everything. Tech is a differentiator in our line of business and there’s no way we could manage tenants properly in Saudi and Oman if we didn’t have that automated system.

“Clearly management and reporting on profitability and potential savings need to be taken at a macro level and the ability to break down data will be critical as we expand across the GCC. The staff are the faces behind the success of Majaal though, and we are confident our core staff and the outsourced services will continue to be delivered to a high standard.”

Majaal hopes that within the next two years it has a presence in another country in the GCC, a landmark achievement in the company’s history, on its way to becoming a regional player.

It is clear to see from the success of the Bahrain model, Majaal will continue to be busy with savvy landowners for many years to come.

SAMSAThe South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) was established under the SAMSA Act 5 of 1998. It is the authority charged with the promotion of South Africa’s maritime interests. These interests, rights and obligations are covered under international conventions to which South Africa is party, such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS), the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and other maritime related conventions, which SAMSA must protect and promote. These international conventions are administered by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

The articulation of the maritime policy imperatives and goals are as follows:• Developing maritime awareness;• Assisting in the creation and fostering of an economic environment

for the Maritime Transport Industry which will allow it to compete with other nations;

• Contributing to the release of the full potential of the maritime industry in South Africa and to the modernisation of the shipping administration;

• Ensuring fair labour practices such as employee rights, job creation and security with acceptable standards of employee health, welfare and safety in the maritime industry.

As a result of articulations in the Transport Policy the founding legislation of SAMSA identified three core mandate of the entity as:• To ensure safety of life and property at sea• To prevent and combat pollution from ships in the marine

environment• To promote South Africa’s maritime interests

This enthusiasm for investment breaks away from the prerogatives of previous management teams, which Pita described as conservative. Most capital investments are planned to be completed in the next five years, which will be across the company’s freight and freight rail operations. Perhaps the most important of these is to increase rail capacity growth to meet growth in market demand volumes which will see capacity soar from 79.7 megatonnes to 170.2 megatonnes. Freight Rail:Rail Operations is by far Transnet’s oldest and largest division, and the network has snaked across the Southern half of the African continent for well over a century. With so many decades of growth and innovation behind it, Transnet’s freight rail accounts for almost 80 percent of sub-Saharan Africa’s total freight infrastructure, which helps to explain why the country retains its place as one of the most developed countries on the continent. Past investment and foresight has ensured that the company has the capacity to transport freight from all of the country’s key industries including minerals, automotive, coal and agriculture. Beyond its extensive coverage of South Africa, the company oversees a web of operations which spans 17 other countries in

Ngqura was earmarked to receive an additional R2 billion in funding to deepen several ship berths and procure a raft of technical equipment in order to expand operational capacity. Equipment procured included 18 rubber tyred gantries, 48 bathtub trailers, two megamax ship-to shore cranes and 48 haulers.

The coal and minerals bulk terminal at Richards Bay has received numerous funding packages across its four decades of service, and now has capacity to process 20 million tonnes per annum, with a berth capacity of 13. Billions of rand have been set aside to fund further capacity which will see growth in this area between 2013 and 2019 to keep up with increased demand.

REGION OF WATERLOO ION L IGHT RAIL TRANSIT

ION is already shaping the community for the future by encouraging development in core city centre areas. For example, there is more than $330 million worth of investment happening near the corner of King and Victoria in Kitchener.

Like a thriving body needs a strong circulatory system, a thriving region needs

strong transit infrastructure to move its residents and visitors throughout its streets and cities. In Canada’s Regional Municipality of Waterloo, plans for improved rapid transit promise to infuse new vitality throughout the region by effectively connecting its core cities of Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge. This improved connection comes in the form of its ION system, a $1.8 billion multi-step project comprised of an adapted bus rapid transit system (aBRT) from Kitchener to Cambridge to be completed this year and a light rail transit (LRT) system connecting Waterloo to Kitchener which is slated for completion in 2017.

Innovation and Integration Several points set the Region of Waterloo’s ION LRT system apart from similar projects. One critical point is its consciousness toward accommodating as many of the region’s residents as possible. This goal contributed toward designing the ION LRT system as the first ever

100 percent low-floor vehicle in rapid transit, a feature that will increase access to residents with physical disabilities.

“No one else has that in North America at this point, we would be the first ones,” said Darshpreet Bhatti, Director for the Region of Waterloo Rapid Transit Division. Bhatti noted that while MetroLinx is also working to procure low-floor vehicles, ION LRT will make its debut first. “It’s a unique opportunity to bring a very AODA-compliant vehicle to the region, and it will make accessibility to and from the vehicles much easier for passengers.”

Another point that sets the ION LRT system apart is the space that it shares with multiple entities. First off is the space it will be sharing with other rail entities. “Another unique component of our project is that we’re among the first in North America where we’re sharing a corridor with freight,” Bhatti added. “There are many examples of it in Europe, but very few in the way we’re doing it in North America.”

Even more important is the space that ION LRT will be sharing with the rest of the Region of Waterloo—the

region is working hard to integrate the light rail system seamlessly within the cities through which it will travel.

“We’re trying to blend this project within the urban fabric of the region,” said Bhatti. “It’s going to two Downtown cores, and our objective has always been to accommodate LRT within existing infrastructure, not to destroy the neighborhoods that we intend to serve. The objective has always been: there’s development here already, we need to find solutions so LRT can serve these neighborhoods without impacting them.”

Decades of Planning and Forethought Blending a light rail system into a bustling city is a daunting objective, but in the Region of Waterloo it’s made less challenging by the fact that rapid transit has been part of the plan for decades. According to Bhatti, the project has been in the minds of region officials conceptually since as early as 1976.

“The council at that time understood the need to have future investment in higher order transit in order to accommodate growth,” said Bhatti. “They were not just looking at the population we would have

had in 1976—they understood that the region would grow over time, and that the right planning policies have to be in place to help future regional employees, council, residents to manage that growth. So they identified a corridor through the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, saying that this is where we would like to focus our future growth, and we have to make sure all the proper transportation choices are offered to those residents and businesses.”

This forethought has been instrumental in

In August 2014, the Region of Waterloo celebrated a historic moment today as officials took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the start of ION Stage 1 Light Rail Transit (LRT) construction. The event took place at the future home of ION’s Operations, Maintenance and Storage Facility on Dutton Drive in Waterloo.

the development of the Region of Waterloo over the past four decades. With planning in place, the region has been able to build its cities up with its vision of strong and cohesive rapid transit in mind, making transit a well-conceived and perfectly integrated part of the region instead of a complicated solution to a growing problem.

“Traditionally for a lot of light

rail projects, engineering is done first and then planning starts,” said Bhatti. “In our case, planning was established much earlier. Since 1976 many policies have been put in place to focus more intensification along the corridor. So we have the intensification we need to justify investment in higher order transit. Then, with the implementation of higher order

Page 116: Supply Chain Digital - April 2015

Communications and community relations forms a major part of bringing LRT to Waterloo Region. In July 2014, 4,279 people toured the 60-foot mock-up of the ION light rail transit (LRT) vehicle when it visited Waterloo Region.

transit, we can supplement that growth and complement it, whereas other places look for light rail as a revitalization project.”

Parsing the Benefits As Bhatti explained, there are multiple benefits to the introduction of the Region of Waterloo’s ION LRT and aBRT systems.

“Fundamentally the two main objectives have always been shaping urban form and providing the right choices for traveling, and transit has to be a key component of that,” said Bhatti. “As intensification happens along a corridor, the majority of trips become short trips—people want to be able to jump from where they’re living to a nearby office, or run errands two or three blocks apart. Driving alone is not sufficient or conducive to that environment. You have to make sure you’re providing all modes

of active transportation—rapid transit, walking and cycling, with auto as an option as well. Once you are supporting that intensification you have to provide the right transportation tools so people can make the choice of traveling from their origin to their destination and vice versa.”

With the region’s careful planning to shape development along the corridor intended for rapid transit, the construction and inclusion of rapid transit systems provides a completion of support for the region’s residents. This is beneficial not only for those living in the heart of the region’s big cities, but also for those in the cities’ suburbs.

“Once you intensify within the urban cores of your city, you’re de facto protecting the suburban areas because you no longer have to invest a lot of money in infrastructure for roads,” Bhatti explained. “There

isn’t a lot of green space here for new roads, and it can be expensive and disruptive to widen existing ones. [This project] also allows us to focus those infrastructure dollars on more transportation improvements—not just light rail or adapted bus rapid transit, but also the improvement and streamlining of existing dimensional networks, like providing more express routes that don’t necessary fall within the catchment area of light rail or bus rapid transit.”

According to Bhatti, benefits of rapid transit development even reach the Region of Waterloo’s rural residents. “Finally, by having all of this investment within the urban cores and protecting the suburbs, we also by default protect the farmlands that are at the periphery of the region,” he added. “Our region has some of the most productive farmlands in the Golden Horseshoe, and we also rely on groundwater reserves—this region is one of the very few midsized communities that rely on groundwater. We need to make sure we protect those sensitive areas that provide a very viable water solution for us. If we allow urban sprawl to continue without having management tools, then those will be impacted.” By intensification of chosen city corridors, supported by strong utilities like rapid transit, sprawl is contained—ultimately supporting a better future for every resident of Waterloo.

be more efficient, more streamlined and overall better for the client.”

According to Silvernagle, the goal behind its continuous improvement plan is to build trust among clients.

“It boils down to how fast you can do business when the trust component is there. Once you have trust, the speed at which you can do business is remarkable. We’ve proven the way we do business works.

The company recently invested over a quarter of a million dollars into software programs to better control costs. The investment allows SEC to be more thorough, detailed and conscious of where every penny is going.

“Trust with the client is built through safety, productivity, and cost-effectiveness,” says Silvernagle. “We made the software investment to help us control our costs so we could lower rates and provide clients with the best deal possible.”

“Our clients want to know we are managing there money properly. Trust among the client is vital, and if you have that, the client retention follows.”

Other continuous improvements include personnel. Within its

organization, SEC has highly qualified people, including Construction Manager, Project Managers, Superintendents, General Foreman, Health and Safety Manager, Safety Administrators as well as numerous long term employees in foreman and tradesman positions.

However, unlike most companies, SEC doesn’t just look at qualifications.

“It’s all about character and Integrity in our business,” says Silvernagle. “I’ll browse resumes but I like to look future employees in the eye and see if they’re personal, intriguing and what they’re built like. Character is everything to me., and we want employees that will drive to ensure our clients are looked after”

Safety driven company South East Construction is committed to a strong health, safety, and environmental program that protect employees, subcontractors, clients, property and members of the public from hard.

training and safety initiatives in the workforce. Along with a traditional orientation with the company, SEC has new employees go through its Safe Start program for training.

“The main question we ask is ‘what would happen if you didn’t come home tonight?’ As we force them to write this down, it’s amazing what happens. It hits home for people,” says Silvernagle. “After two weeks on the job we bring them back to finish the safety program. It not only helps refresh them and hold them accountable, but it shows we care about their well being.”

SEC focuses on daily assessments. This includes daily job requirements as well as everyday job hazards. It’s reviewed daily with the employee and foremen to ensure employees understand the risks each day and for each job.

In addition, South East Construction has a corporate safety manger that ensures the company goes above and beyond the call of duty in safety.

“We take safety very seriously and we like to reward employees who’ve been exceptional in that department,” says Silvernagle. “We elect an employee at each site who has gone above and beyond the safety bar and reward them a gift. We like to make it personal to show we care.

with a range of services included. This is where ALD shows its expertise. “Our value proposal is very interesting for companies, especially in times of crisis. We help reduce the investment of capital and the risk, and to that effect we offer full solutions for each fleet profile and specific needs,” explains Pascal Vitantonio, CEO of ALD Brazil.

The main focus is to assess each customer’s profile and recommend the best package of customized services with flexible and safe solutions. ALD orders vehicles, arranges for license plate, licensing and other documents. It provides 24-hour service that includes preventive and corrective maintenance services throughout the term of the agreement.

In addition to ensuring solutions that reduce the environmental impact caused by the emission of gas from vehicles, ALD also offers consultancy programs in order to optimize the financial cost. The assessment criteria may vary from the monthly rental value, comfort items and classification of operating costs, through the growth of the car dealer service network or the projection of the selling value of cars by the end of the hiring period.

Environmental Responsibility and Investments “In addition to encouraging our customers to invest in the preservation of the environment by means of the program ALD Bluefleet, we also offer the Shared Fleet Solution”, says Vitantonio. The program is based on the rental of a pool of cars where the same car will be used by more than one employee, thus allowing a more sustainable use. As a result of the socio-environmental actions, the group has a forest with more than 20 thousand trees planted to compensate the CO2 emission from the customers’ fleet.

To maintain the growth, in addition to continuing to develop new businesses, ALD’s strategy comprises taking special care of employees. “Our greatest pride is our skilled, committed team, capable of mobilizing internal resources and maintaining the cultures of quality services to our

Brasil has plans for investments in systems, advisory management and new products, such as telemetry-based solutions. Finally, the CEO also reveals a new “premium” proposal to be implemented very soon. “This year we are offering a unique service for the class of executive drivers. In the end, the great strength of the company is to be able to present each one of our services, leveraged on our global expertise, but fully tailored to the Brazilian culture”.

More than ever before, the key to efficient production lies in implementing energy-saving measures. These range from the use of energy-efficient drives to the shutdown of complex pro-duction processes. In the past, this shutdown had to be done manually, making it very time-consuming. Today, a standard-ized data interface ensures that power consumers can be

switched off centrally in a coordinated and risk-free manner, thus enabling plant operators to achieve energy savings of up to 80 percent during production pauses.
