FLUORSPAR TRADE FLOWS

FLUORSPAR FACTSETYMOLOGYThe word fluorspar is derived from the Latin verb ‘fluor’ meaning to flow and the German ‘spar’, which is a term historically used in mineralogy to describe a non-metallic mineral with crystalline formations.

OCCURRENCEFluorspar is generally located in vein deposits where it is often found as part of the host-rock in association with other industrial minerals such as barite and quartz.

APPLICATIONTraditionally used as a flux, high purityfluorspar (acidspar) is also a major sourceof hydrogen fluoride which is the precursorcompound to a range fluorinated chemicals.

FUN FACTWhile commonly depicted as a deeppurple colour, fluorspar is found in a wide range of different colours dependant on various chemical impurities. This has led to fluorspar being described as the most colourful mineral in the world.

• Consumes only metspar• Grades between 60-85% CaF2 consumed • Used as flux in iron and steel casting and steelmaking• Accounts for 26% of the total fluorspar market

GLASSMAKING

• Consumes a higher grade of metspar; lower grade acidspar• Grades between 85%-96% CaF2 consumed • Used to produce a white opalescence for specialty glass, ceramics and enamelware

WELDING

• Consumes mainly lower CaF2 metspar• Grades between 60% to 85% CaF2 consumed• Used as flux for welding and coating welding rods

CEMENT

• Any quality of fluorspar can be consumed in the cement industry ranging from 40% to 95%• Grades of CaF2 used depend on the processing abilities of the cement plant• Main advantage is its mineralising effect in the cement process
