OCCURRENCE Fluorspar is generally located in vein deposits where it is often found as part of the host-rock in association with other industrial minerals such as barite and quartz. APPLICATION Traditionally used as a flux, high purity fluorspar (acidspar) is also a major source of hydrogen fluoride which is the precursor compound to a range fluorinated chemicals. FUN FACT While commonly depicted as a deep purple colour, fluorspar is found in a wide range of different colours dependant on various chemical impurities. This has led to fluorspar being described as the most colourful mineral in the world. 3.5m tonnes Acidspar 2.3m tonnes Metspar PRODUCTION IN 2015 FLUORSPAR CONVERSION RATES 25 : 1 0.7 0.02 0.47 0.4 0.78 0.71 0.7 HF 1 HCFC - 22 1 HCFC - 1425 1 HFC - 134a 1 HFC - 143a 1 HFO - 1234yf 1 AIF 3 1 AL 4% ACIDSPAR FLUOROCHEMICALS TRANSITIONS High GWP Ozone depletion Ozone depletion 1st Gen CFC 2nd Gen HCFC 3rd Gen HFC 4th Gen HFO END MARKETS CHEMICAL AIF 3 ACIDSPAR Price Reporting, Market Intelligence, Events, Research and Wallcharts EVENTS indmin.com/events/fluorspar “The ‘who’s who’ of the industry. INDUSTRIAL

METSPAR

STEELMAKING

• Consumes only metspar• Grades between 60-85% CaF2 consumed • Used as flux in iron and steel casting and steelmaking• Accounts for 26% of the total fluorspar market

GLASSMAKING

• Consumes a higher grade of metspar; lower grade acidspar• Grades between 85%-96% CaF2 consumed • Used to produce a white opalescence for specialty glass, ceramics and enamelware

WELDING

• Consumes mainly lower CaF2 metspar• Grades between 60% to 85% CaF2 consumed• Used as flux for welding and coating welding rods

CEMENT

• Any quality of fluorspar can be consumed in the cement industry ranging from 40% to 95%• Grades of CaF2 used depend on the processing abilities of the cement plant• Main advantage is its mineralising effect in the cement process
