Brushes: Brushes for oils should be made of natural bristle. Don’t buy acrylic brushes as they will not work properly with oils. W&N ARTISAN brushes are an exception as they are designed for oils. You should have at least one flat brush around 1” wide and a selection of filberts, brights, and flats, size 4 and 8. A small watercolour round size #4 or #6 is handy for details. Miscellaneous:

• Paper towels • Apron • Pencils • Pallet – Wooden pallets are

recommended rather than paper pallets.

• Pallet Knife • Reference material – Either

photographs or sketches. • Paper or Sketch Book • Container for your mineral spirits.

Container for used mineral spirits (DO NOT POUR SOLVENT DOWN THE DRAIN)

NOTE OIL PAINT MY ONLY BE USED AT LOYALIST COLLEGE OR OUT DOORS AT THE RCAF MUSEUM.

THEY CAN NOT BE USED IN THE MUSEUM BUILDING. NOTE: Loyalist College doesn’t have a good supply of easels so it is recommended that you bring your own. Many art stores have them on sale during the summer and they are quite affordable. I find that the ones made off-shore aren’t as well made but do usually last for while before giving problems. There is an art store in Belleville, BARRETT’S ART & OFFICE SUPPLIES, 314 Front Street, Belleville. They are open until 5:30pm so you can easily purchase supplies that you might forget. MICHAEL’S also has a store in town but unless they have products on sale the prices are usually close to list with a very small discount if any.

Always remember that we are guests of the RCAF and it is through their generosity that we

are being allowed to work at this museum. QUESTIONS? Please contact:

Mediums & Primers Removable Masking Fluid (optional) Surfaces: For this class you should bring at least 5 sheets of paper. There are several brands of paper the ones I recommend are: Arches, Waterford or Fabriano (Artistico). I find that the ‘rough’ paper in these brands allows the colours to break on the paper but you can still achieve good detail. I personally on work on 300lb paper as it doesn’t need stretching. You should also bring a 12” x 16” pad of watercolour paper 140 lb for quick studies and roughs. Winsor & Newton Cotman or Saunder’s Bockingford are good quality and value. You should have a drawing board slightly larger than your paper so you can tape your paper down before working. I don’t recommend watercolour blocks as they are overpriced and since most are either 90 or 140 .lb the paper tend to cockle and cause problems in larger sizes. You will also need a sketchbook. It should be at least 11 x 14. An excellent one is made by EN TOUR artist Products It has the ‘Robert Bateman’ name on the cover. Brushes: You should bring a selection of watercolour rounds and flats and also some larger brushes for washes. Sable brushes are the best but are expensive. The W&N Sceptre II are a mixture of nylon and sable and offer good value for the money. Their Cotman brand is synthetic and while not suitable for large washes perform well when painting smaller areas. Goat hair mop brushes are good for applying large washes or wetting paper and are quite reasonable. Miscellaneous:

• Paper towels / Tissues • Apron • Pencils ( 2H / HB / 2B )

Watercolour Pallet or butchers tray • Water container • Spray bottle • Reference material – Either

photographs or sketches • Paper or Sketch Book • Gum eraser • Masking tape • Drawing board (Gatorboard or

Polycore are good alternatives as they are strong and lightweight)

Artist/Instructor: Robinson, Martha

Course: Canvas and Colour: Beginning with Oils Course Code: PAIN 8109 7036

A materials fee of $25 payable to the instructor on the first day includes: • One canvas paper pad for exercises: Canson Canva-paper 9 x 12" 10 sheets • Liquin (medium) 200 ml in a glass receptacle. • Odourless spirits or Limonene solvent 100 ml in a glass receptacle.

Supports: The Canva-paper pad is an already prepared surface that will allow you to get started right away. I will have additional pads on hand (for purchase) in case students run out and I will show examples of other surfaces and surface preparation. If you would like to bring alternate surfaces to paint on, such as a cradled wood panel, masonite panel, or canvas you may do so. Wood, masonite, raw canvas or even bristol board must be prepared with gesso. I would suggest about 16 x 20 inches as a maximum size. Palette: You may use a traditional wood palette, a small plexiglas sheet, a commercial palette tear-off pad, or wax paper. Wax paper is the easiest clean up, and least expensive. Miscellaneous: Lint free rags (very old clean cotton pillowcases or flannel shirts), paper towels, pliers (for opening paint tubes) glass jars (jelly size with lids). Masking tape (buff or black, NOT green or blue painter’s tape), black or brown pencil crayons and eraser, scissors. Brushes: There are a vast number of shapes (brights, rounds, flats, filberts and fans), sizes and materials to choose from in brushes produced for oil painting. If you would like to learn about brushes I suggest the website for Rosemary and Company as a good resource (https://www.rosemaryandco.com). My preference is for synthetic mongoose, but white taklon and golden synthetic are also good inexpensive choices. Aboveground Art has two brands of synthetic moongoose, Curry’s has Princeton #6300 synthetic brushes, Stevenson’s has Oron, you should be able to find what you need at most retailers. I suggest purchasing three brushes: a small round nylon size 0,1 or 2 for detail, and short flats, known as brights in sizes 4 and 6 in synthetic mongoose or nylon to start you off. If you have a selection of brushes already you may not need to purchase anything, but you can email any questions you may have about your brushes.

Paint: I recommend Stevenson’s oil paints(available from Stevenson’s) or M. Graham (available at Curry’s) They are both great value brands, and I have found the pigment quality to be second to none. Some colours (cerulean blue is a good example) have a synthetic version, usually labelled ‘hue’ which is less expansive but comparable to the more expensive pigment. If you have any questions about colour or brand of paint please feel free to email. Colours: Titanium White Cadmium Red Middle or Naphthol Red (M. Graham) Permanent Alizarin Hue Cadmium or Azo Yellow Lemon or Hansa Yellow (M. Graham) Cadmium Yellow Middle

Cobalt Blue Deep Hue Phthalo(cyanine) Blue Ultramarine Blue Burnt Umber Burnt Sienna Raw Sienna (or Yellow Ochre) Optional: Iron Oxide or Ivory Black Cerulean Blue

Suppliers: All of these suppliers can fill orders by mail, online or by telephone. Stevenson is a Canadian company that is not as well-known but has a stellar reputation for the price and quality of its paint. For the other stores I have specified brands or type of material. Student discounts are often available on full priced items at these three retailers. If you do online price comparisons you will see that the big box retailer in craft and art supplies sells the same materials for double the price of these specialty retailers. Course: Fibre, Wool and Watercolour: Working with Colour Course Code: PAIN 8144 7034 A general note: This course is a little unusual in that we will be exploring colour mixing and theory in watercolour but participants may also choose to finish some exercises using fabric scraps or yarn if they are available to you. You are welcome to call or email the instructor (Martha 905 885 0691 or [email protected]) about the suitability of your supplies before going out to purchase any items listed. Please read over the list carefully. For the fairly new to watercolour I have suggested a very economical brand of paint, and a good inexpensive paper that performs well. Drawing media:

• Pencil and eraser are your choice of brand and hardness/softness. A water soluble crayon or pencil (in a light colour) for underdrawing or planning can be helpful but is not required.

• Ruler and scissors, paper towel, cutting board and rotary cutter (if working with fabric) • Small misting bottle for wetting palette.

Support/paper: I highly recommend Canson Montval, 140 lb. cold press, a cellulose (but archival) watercolour paper that comes in a variety of different sized pads, either coil bound or as blocks, which are inexpensive and great for class work—the paper performs like a rag watercolour paper and the colour sits up nicely on the page [Note: do not buy Canson XL, as it does not stand up well to washes]. Please bring one half sheet of a 200 or 300 lb. cold press watercolour paper—if you find this difficult to obtain, please contact me. Brushes: There are a large variety of synthetic Gold Sable or similar nylon/taklon brushes on the market, or synthetic/sable mix which are entirely suitable and reasonably priced (Escoda is a good brand in the under $20 price range). If you are interested in augmenting your brush selection, buy a relatively large size (#12 or 10 round), and #8, and #6. If you regularly use any of these please bring them (but they are not necessary to buy for this class): A small stiff bristled acrylic flat brush for scrubbing out; smaller watercolour rounds like a #4 for detail; a worn watercolour brush for drybrush textures, a three quarter or one inch wash brush; a rigger(or liner).

Paint: Participants are welcome to use whatever brand of paint they prefer, although I would not recommend Cotman. This colour list is a suggestion, and you may chose to make substitutions. I have written a brief description of each hue to help with any substitutions from your own palette. Unless otherwise stated I use Stevenson (S) watercolours, supplemented with a few M Graham (MG, available at Curry’s), Winsor Newton (WN) or Holbein (H) pigments. You will need a warm and a cool each of red, yellow and blue from the list below or your own brands/hues (six primaries in total). These are the essentials: Cadmium Yellow Middle: A warm yellow. (S) Lemon Yellow: A basic cool yellow, Stevenson. Winsor Newton Lemon is not recommended. Hansa yellow is acceptable. Cadmium Red Middle: Light warm red. Essential for mixing flesh tones, terracotta. (S) Naphthol red from M. Graham is suitable. Alizarin Crimson: a deep slightly rosy red, useful for mixing purples, and pale cool pinks. French Ultramarine (WN) or Ultramarine blue (S or MG): a deep warm blue and/or Winsor(WN) or Phthalo blue(S): a deep cooler blue and/or Cerulean blue: Thus is an expensive blue, so only bring it if you already have it. Other colours to bring if you have them: Burnt umber: A dark brown, also useful for mixing dark grey. (S) Burnt sienna: a light reddish brown, for mixing, accenting reds, mixing terracottas. (WN, or MG transparent red iron oxide) Cobalt blue(S): a blue midway in temperature, also used for mixing greys, but not a strong mixer. Greens: Hooker's or Sap Green: mid-value greens from the tube for mixing skin tones. As a general tool on the palette, if you want to have one green on your palette, Viridian will give you lots to work with for mixing. Raw Sienna: Similar to Yellow Ochre, but more transparent. (S) You are welcome to bring all of the paint colours that you currently own for discussion. Non-essential hues which I use: Holbein Opera Rose, Winsor Newton Light Red, M Graham Neutral Tint, Stevenson’s Quinacridone Violet. I may discuss these in class but they are not necessary to purchase. Water container: At least one, ideally two and pint sized or larger. Mason jars, ice cream tubs etc. Palette: You will need some type of mixing surface. If you do not already have a palette or palettes in your supplies, a good alternative mixing surface for watercolour, in class or at home, is an old enamel butcher's tray, or several white china dollar store dinner or fondue plates.

Tape: White paper low tack tape is available at art supply stores or beige masking tape. Traditional brown paper tape for stretching watercolour paper if you use it. Please do not bring the green or blue painterʼs edging tape available in most paint departments. Sketchbook: Handouts will be provided but a sketchbook for recording exercises will be essential. It does not have to be a new book. It is a good way to document tips and techniques, make notes on class discussions and critiques of your work, and later on can be inspiring to look back on. Examples will be on hand. If you intend to do smaller exercises in your sketchbook it will be essential to bring a watercolour sketch book, and there are many options on the market today. IF planning to do colour swatching samples using yarn, fibre or fabric: You will need to bring bristol of some kind for mounting your fibre and fabric samples and some way of fixing your samples to the board (you may have a glue you regularly use, or want to sew the examples to the boards) Camera: an asset for recording work in progress. Suppliers: All of these suppliers can fill orders by mail, online or by telephone.
