Up in the mountains surrounding Harrison Lake, just a few kilome-tres north of Chilliwack, B.C., a logging road slowly winds its way up along the mountainside. The road comes to a sud-den end, facing a wall of sheer rock which blocks the path.

Carly Wethersett, Mar-keting Director at Shear-Force Equipment, stands near that rock wall and watches as a small crew fits an excavator with one of her companys lat-est products. It will be a real-world test of what the product can do in Cana-das mountainous terrain.

That product is the XR40, a mid-size model of the Xcentric Ripper. Back in March of 2011, the excavator attachment caught the eye of Shear-Forces President and General Manager, Brad Dewit, at ConExpo in Las Vegas. Within weeks of seeing the Ripper on the tradeshow floor, Dewit

signed on for his company to be the exclusive Cana-dian dealer for all Xcentric Ripper models. Not three months later, ShearForce made their first sale of the XR30, and its been a part of their product line ever since.

Back up on the moun-tain, the Ripper is all rigged up, and the operator makes his first few passes at the rock face. Wethersett watches on as the Ripper makes quick work of the rock wall, tearing it away. The operator looks over and tells her, I cant be-lieve how fast this thing is going. It cuts through like it was butter.

If the results sound extraordinary, thats be-cause the Ripper is no or-dinary hammer. Initially designed to tackle exca-vation and trenching proj-ects in the north of Spain, the Ripper boasts some impressive key stats. In half of all job applica-tions, its been proven to be two to five times more

effective than any other hydraulic breaker avail-able on the market. The technology

The secret, as Wether-sett says from her office in Abbotsford, B.C., is in the attachments patented Impact Energy Accumu-lation Technology.

The technology it uses is twofold, she ex-plained, Its impaction, like a typical hydraulic hammer would use, but it also uses vibration... the vibration works into cracks and fractures, in-creasing them and split-ting the rock apart. Its accelerating the rate of de-molition by working with those natural fractures.

That twofold attack and the boost it gives to overall productivity is just one of the benefits of the Xcentric Ripper. The attachment is entirely self-contained in an air-tight enclosure, which means less noise than the average hydraulic breaker (its operating noise level is about on-par with a standard bucket). The enclosure also protects against dust, dirt, earth and moisture, making the Ripper virtually mainte-

    nance-free. Capitalizing on advan-tages

At the end of the day, when equipment is down, money is lost. The un-

precedented speed and efficiency of the Ripper, combined with its no-maintenance operation, translates into less opera-tor time and lower fuel usage. Bottom line, that

means big savings on overall operating costs and if that werent enough reduced en-vironmental impacts, as well.

    Although the Ripper

can be found on job sites worldwide in Australia, China, the United States and throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America you wont find it anywhere in Canada unless you go to ShearForce Equipment.

Were a very young and progressive team, Wethersett said, and when Brad [Dewit] saw the Ripper at ConExpo, he thought, This is going to fit really well with our customer base, itll add to what we already do. Its that progressive attitude, I think, that led us to bring the Ripper to Canada, to take that chance on it. ShearForce Equipment

While ShearForce may be a new name in the in-dustry, theyre no rookies when it comes to equip-ment. ShearForce is a

recently-formed division of West Coast Machinery, which has been owned and operated by the Dewit family since Brads grand-father founded the compa-ny in 1973. Until recently, all of their products were marketed under the West Coast name. However, with changing times come changing business.

As Wethersett ex-plained, The desire to change [the name] to Shearforce was the need to show that were ready to move across Canada. We are no longer just West Coast Machinery, were encompassing much more than that. So [the name change] was a move to reflect our chang-ing customer base.

If the Ripper is any indication, ShearForce is already well-equipped

to deliver work-site solu-tions across the country. The attachments method using impaction and vibration is a huge ad-vantage in a wide range of locations, from the coastal granite and clay slate of British Columbia, to lime-stone of the prairies, to the permafrost of the north. Being fully enclosed, the Ripper is even suitable for underwater work, and can be submerged up to 50 metres deep. Excavation, trenching, demolition and dredging the Ripper can handle them all.

Of course, the tech-nology has some limita-tions. The Ripper works best where the earth has natural fracture and faults which can be worked into. In rock formations with fewer naturally-occurring

fractures, the Ripper may not be the right tool for the job.

In cases like that, Wethersett said, even a

hammer might not neces-sarily be the best thing. You may still have to con-sider drilling and blast-ing. Constant evolution

Even so, with possi-ble applications across the country, especially in the north and along the West Coast, the Xcentric Ripper is one

of the most exciting new excavation products available in the Cana-dian marketplace. The success of one product alone isnt enough for

the team at ShearForce, though. Theyre always on the lookout for new products; in fact, as this article is being written, company President Brad Dewit and Vice Presi-dent Rob Beukema are in Europe, searching for the next big thing to bring to their custom-ers.

Back in Abbotsford, Wethersett is optimis-tic about what the fu-ture holds for the com-pany, and the Xcentric Ripper.

Theres still lots to be done here. Theres so much potential out there, this is such a new product and there are so many industries we can provide our services to. It almost makes you won-der, Where do we even start?

She added, with a laugh, Its a good prob-lem to have.

Most people dont real-ize how much air it takes to build a bridge. Chuck Burlet knows you cant build one without it. Air is a primary part of all of the tools we use, says the maintenance charge-hand for Canron Western Constructors LP in Delta.

Bridge building is just one aspect of the work

done by Canron, part of Supreme Group, the largest privately owned steel fabricator and con-struction business in Canada. There are nine shops within the Supreme Group, and the steel fab-rication operation relies on compressed air. With projects ranging from the new Port Mann Bridge to

the Olympic Cauldron, the company has to think about its energy use.Compressed air sucks up energy

Working with BC Hydro, Canron had a member of the Power Smart Alliance conduct an energy audit. The primary savings, accord-ing to the study, were

to establish a plan for the compressor, Bur-let says. Previously the company was using an Atlas Copco 150-horse, constant-speed compres-sor, operating three shifts a day, seven days a week. These things just roar all day long. The power bills were up at about 14 to 15 grand a month, he says.

After getting the go-ahead from the corporate office, Burlet decided to upgrade to a 100-horse-power, variable-speed model.

Hydro put a meter-monitoring device on there and it substanti-ated all of our informa-tion, Burlet says. We established that, without even thinking about it, we could take 30% off of our bill.$52,000 savings even bet-ter than expected, with a two-year payback

The new compressor was installed in October 2012, so Burlet says its too early to get a com-pletely accurate picture of energy savings, but based on bills so far its been 33 MWh per month, for esti-mated savings of $52,000 a year.

    Burlet says the savings

are higher than originally projected, but he isnt sur-prised. This compressor runs for the demand of air required, so if air is not required then the motor backs off, he says. Its not running full-bore all the time.

The installation also allowed the company to keep the former backup compressor for indepen-dent use. We can run two different pressures in tandem for two different utilizations of the air, he says, noting that has made processes more efficient and allows Canron to do more work than before with the same amount of equipment.

It doesnt surprise me at all that were over in the amount of savings shown, just because of the way it operates, he says.

Burlet says the total cost of buying and install-ing the new compressor was about $80,000, and BC Hydro provided a $35,000 rebate through the Self-Serve Incentive Program. Because of the nature of Canrons work, installation was done in-house. There werent really any other costs incurred, so the sav-ings are going to go straight

to the Hydro bill. Theyre going to be evident right away, Burlet says, adding that the estimated payback will be just over two years.Canron looks at other ways to improve energy efficiency

As a result of the energy audit, Canron is looking at other ways to improve energy efficiency. It has re-placed signage on the north and west of the building to use LED lighting and is considering other lighting upgrades.

The company is also looking at the efficiency of other machinery, such as motors. Ive got a num-ber of very large pieces of equipment here that suck a lot of power, Burlet says.

Burlet notes that theres always some risk when it comes to spending money. But, he says, Its no differ-ent than the age-old home renovation scenario. You have to do your due dili-gence, do your research, talk to as many people as you can, gather all your in-formation.

With Canrons experi-ence, he says, Its pretty easy to see why our corpo-rate figureheads looked at the numbers and said Give er! b

Twenty-five years goes by fast when you are hav-ing fun.

That is certainly the case when it comes to the Awards of Excellence program sponsored by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA). As it happens this year - the awards silver anniversary - finds it in much better shape than it was when originally found-ed. Thats something that cant necessarily be said for those of us who were on hand when the idea was hatched.

The program started as a single award for a gen-eral contractor. The late Allen Bennett, who was President of the VRCA, approached me. I was the editor of the construction industry newspaper, the Journal of Commerce. He asked if the paper would financially sponsor the award and we agreed to do so. The first award went to Dominion Construction for a new building constructed for Macdonald Dettwiler in Richmond. Dr. John Macdonald, one of the founders of the iconic Ca-nadian company and cur-rent Chancellor of the Uni-versity of Northern B.C.,

was on hand for a modest gathering of around 30 or 40 people when the award was presented.

Since that time the pro-gram has grown enormous-ly and now offers between 35 and 38 awards in 12 to 15 categories depending on entries in any particu-lar year. The presentation event, held at the Vancou-ver Trade and Convention Centre, regularly attracts some 650 people.

It has grown to be by far the largest construc-tion industry awards pro-gram in Canada. The basic premise was always very simple: recognize the work of contractors. Architects and engineers all had an array of awards programs. Contractors went largely unnoticed. Sometimes their work, if it was under-ground or hidden behind walls, went literally un-seen.

The Awards of Excel-lence set out to change all that. And it has succeeded beyond all expectations.

No one was more re-sponsible for taking the original small program and expanding it to what it is today than Keith Sashaw. For the past 12 years Sashaw served as President

of the VRCA. He recently left that post to take up a similar position with the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies of British Columbia.

There are, he says, so many benefits and spi-noffs from a program like that. First and foremost it really provides an op-portunity for the industry to showcase excellence. It really demonstrates to the public and policy makers what the industry is ca-pable of doing. It heightens awareness of the industry and what it is doing.

Sashaw points out that for those firms who partici-pate in the awards program it offers a tremendous mar-keting opportunity. Over the years construction pro-curement has undergone a sea change. Originally most projects were won or lost on a straight low bid process. That is now fairly rare. Now construction companies have to market themselves and compete on much more than simply price.

The arrival in recent years of new competition from the United States and overseas has only served to emphasize the need for local firms to market them-selves well.

Repeat winners, says Sashaw, realize it looks really good in a submis-sion to an owner if they are award winners. It shows they not only participate in these programs but they have been recognized by their peers as exceptional.

We are now seeing that the industry is much more attuned to marketing and promoting excellence. There is now much more to selecting contractors than just the lowest price. Win-ning an award really does help that approach.

Dolphe Hoffman and I are the only two local members left on the com-mittee. In addition, Joe Burnett represents the committee on Vancouver Island. Hoffman, a long-time consultant and par-ticipant in the construction

industry, agrees totally with Sashaws assessment. He remembers when the awards committee argued over whether or not con-struction management companies should even be allowed to compete in the general contractor cat-egory. Construction man-agement, of course, has since become a very com-mon method of building. The awards program, he points out, has evolved and changed along with the in-dustry it represents.

Chairman of the selec-tion committee in effect the head of the judges committee is Tony Ev-erett. Until his retirement five years ago he was vice-President of Marketing and Business Development with Steels Industrial Prod-ucts Limited. He heads a selection committee of 20 men and women. Most, but certainly not all, are retired members of the in-dustry. Collectively they effectively represent every aspect of the industry trade contractors, general contractors, mechanical and electrical contractors and the financial industry.

There is a bit of a fla-vour of everything in the group, he points out. There is a pretty good blend of experience. There is likely nobody in the group who knows every-thing about every facet of construction.

He too points to the changes in the industry that are in turn being reflected in the awards program. For example, recently a catego-ry has been added to spe-cifically recognize sustain-able construction. At the other end of the spectrum awards are now also being given to projects that pre-serve heritage structures.

Who knows? Quite possibly when the Awards of Excellence celebrates its 50th anniversary some of the new high-tech projects that are winning awards for sustainable construction today will be up for heritage awards that year. b

A profitable investment with an innovative drive concept.

Productivity Partnership for a Lifetime. The ASC single-drum rollers offer the highest compaction performance on the market - so you get a productivity boost from the very first day. Equally wise when it comes to efficiency and cost-effectiveness: the fully hydraulic drive concept.

The low engine position gives these single-drum rollers maximum stability and climbing ability. Excellent visibility for users and easy service access for you to cut maintenance costs. All these benefits turn this powerful innovation into a highly profitable investment.

A long-term investment but not really a movable asset.

SGS is honoured to re-ceive the Business Leader-ship / Entrepreneurial In-novation award, presented annually by the County of Peterborough. This award is presented in recognition of new and successful ini-tiatives undertaken by lo-cal businesses that make outstanding contributions to the County. SGS Canada Inc.s Lakefield facility was presented the Business Leadership/Entrepreneur-ial Innovation award dur-ing the County of Peter-borough 2013 Recognition Awards, held May 24, 2013 in Norwood, Ontario.

The Lakefield site was recognized for its recent expansion initiative, a new 41,000 square foot geo-chemistry laboratory. This new building will not only allow SGS to provide supe-rior geochemistry services, it will also allow the highly regarded Environmental Services group more room to expand their services and continue to flourish in the existing facilities. The

company was also recog-nized for its continued suc-cess in the mining industry, its many investments in the facilities and staff of the site and the resulting positive impact on the local com-munity. This unparalleled growth and continued high achievement is directly due to the expertise, dedication and determination of the Lakefield staff.

The new facility is part of a fully integrated geo-chemistry, environmental, metallurgy and mineralogy laboratory complex that is a primary hub in the SGS global network of labora-tories. The Lakefield site is internationally recognized as a centre of excellence across these disciplines and a critical part of SGS 2014 Growth Plan. The compre-hensive list of services is the result of SGS dedicated response to the continued demand from the mining industry. SGS is known throughout the industry as the worlds leading pro-vider of bankable minerals

    services. Established in 1941, the

Lakefield facility is a flag-ship lab in SGS Canada Inc.s overall business and has earned the respect of the global minerals sector for the chemical analysis, metallurgical testing and laboratory outsourcing ac-tivities performed there. In 1989, the Environmen-tal Services department was added and has further contributed to the sites reputation for excellence by providing timely, cost effective, environmental solutions and superior cus-tomer service.

Around the world, SGS offers a wide range of ser-vices to the minerals and environmental sectors. From geochemical analy-sis, resource calculation, mineralogy, metallurgy, advanced process con-trol systems, water treat-ment, and trade services to a complete range of analyses in organic and inorganic chemistry, mi-crobiology and acid rock drainage for soils, sedi-ments, waters, waste and biota, SGS has you cov-ered. As hurricane season approaches, NB Power crews continue to trim low-hanging branches around power lines to en-sure safe and reliable de-livery of electricity to ur-ban and rural customers throughout the province.

Maintaining trees around the power lines ensures the reliability of the electrical infrastruc-ture, said Sherry Thom-son, Vice-President of Customer Service, Distri-bution and Transmission. Certified arborists and forest technicians routine-ly inspect and maintain trees around the power lines on public and pri-vate properties. We only cut and trim trees if they present a potential elec-trical safety issue or have the potential to affect power lines.

Trees and branches fall-ing into power lines during storms accounted for 36 per cent of the power out-

ages in New Brunswick last year. Preventative mainte-nance will help reduce the number of power outages customers may experience during high winds and heavy weather.

NB Power vegeta-tion management crews have inspected power lines and cleared veg-etation in various areas throughout the province based on our preventa-tive maintenance pro-gram, said Thomson.

NB Power follows in-ternational science-based directional pruning stan-dards and guidelines for all tree maintenance, which may result in an uneven shape to the tree. If maintenance or removal is required, NB Power fol-lows these standard safe distances: If a tree is removed or

maintained, all other healthy trees will be left standing and pruned as required to a minimum

2.5 metres (8 feet) of clearance around the power line.

Hedges will be topped at 1 metre (3 feet) below a service loop or commu-nications line.

Ornamental trees may be allowed to remain a min-imum of 1.5 metres (4 feet) away from power lines, depending on tree and branch size.NB Powers tree main-

tenance program is vital to ensure reliable service, in particular during storms and strong winds.

Residents are asked to take precautions when planting shrubs or trees near power lines to en-sure they are best-suited to grow in the vicinity of power lines. For those wishing to plant new trees or shrubs, NB Pow-er has tips on planting the right tree in the right place, and which shrubs or trees are best-suited to grow in the vicinity of power lines.

NB Power is working to maintain the balance between environment and infrastructure, to keep the lines clear of tree branches, ensure system reliability and keep the lights on in New Brunswick. b

The range of robust han-dling and lifting equipment supplied by the J D Neu-haus company is currently in use around the world on Jack-up rigs, Semi-sub-mersibles, Drill ships and FPSO vessels. Their prod-uct range incorporates both air and hydraulically pow-ered hoists, with individual lifting capacities ranging from 550lbs to 100 metric tons. These products can also be incorporated into single or double girder overhead travelling cranes, underslung cranes with special low headroom trol-ley designs, together with purpose designed slewing jib cranes. Hoists can be supplied for specific func-tion duties such as BOP handling (up to 200 metric tons), as well as providing virtually unlimited lifting and general load move-ment solutions including

both oblique and horizon-tal pulling under pre-deter-mined conditions.

A BOP handling unit incorporating four J D Neuhaus type EH50 air operated monorail hoists has been supplied to the Maersk offshore rig Guard-ian, for synchronized BOP lifting and handling dur-ing both pre and post drill-ing operations. Two hoists are mounted on each of the twin parallel overhead rails, with each hoist pro-viding 50 metric ton load and 20 meter lift capacities for between deck opera-tions. With the two sets of hoists operating together, a combined lift capac-ity of 200 metric tons was made available. Synchro-nized operation of all linear movement and lifting oper-ations of individual, paired or all the four hoists when used in conjunction, was

provided with JDN type F multi-function controllers incorporating the main air emergency stop together with a load monitoring de-vice.

The largest purpose built offshore crane sys-tem constructed to date by J D Neuhaus was a semi portal, A-frame design supporting twin overhead horizontal track beams each fitted with a single hy-draulic EH 40-H hoist unit. These hoists can be oper-ated individually or simul-taneously from one con-troller, and when used in conjunction a total lift of 80 metric tons is possible with a 12 meter lift height being provided over a 7.5 meter span. A JDN Profi 6 TI-H hoist with 6 metric ton lift capacity was also supplied to cover other operational and service requirements. The crane was specified to comply fully with offshore duties including operating at temperatures down to -20C. Survival conditions had also to be been main-tained in turbulent weather conditions to cover inclines

from the horizontal of the rig of 3 with the crane loaded or 27 when un-loaded.

All the JDN products combine a rugged build quality with high perfor-mance, 100% reliability and the utmost in safety.

Their JDN Profi TI hoists are also 100% duty rated and require low mainte-nance, so eliminating un-necessary downtime. The products are also imper-vious to dust and damp working conditions and op-erate within a temperature

range of -20C to +70C. Where supplied for off-shore operation, on either rigs or ocean going vessels, then the equipment is pro-vided with a full Offshore Package which includes extra corrosion protection

to cater for rough, salty weather conditions. The main body component parts of both hoists and cranes are supplied with a four layer marine paint top coat, having a 280 mi-crons total minimum dry thickness in standard traf-fic yellow RAL 1023 colour. Exposed products such as valves and valve heads, together with suspension chains are manufactured from stainless steel, togeth-er with bolts and nuts less than 12mm in size. Larger threaded bolt ends and nuts, together with trolley wheel bearings are other-wise protected with grease packed covers, while the chain containers are sup-plied with a galvanized fin-ish.

All hoists in the JDN Profi TI range incorpo-rate top hook suspension mounting and feature pen-dant push-button control-lers as standard. These hand controllers provide sensitive, infinitely vari-able or single speed con-trol of the load lift, lower and powered trolley tra-verse movements where overhead rail mounting is utilized. Trolley mounting options include manual,

reel chain and motorized variations. All hoists are also fully ATEX rated for operation in hazardous or potentially explosive atmo-spheres to a standard clas-sification of Ex II 2 GD IIA T4 / II 3 GD IIB T4.

Standard safety features of the hoists include inte-grated adjustable overload protection for load rat-ings of one metric ton and above. A self-adjusting fail-safe braking mechanism is fitted, together with trolley anti-climb drop devices and an emergency stop switch integrated in the main power supply. An emergency lowering device can also be supplied for the Profi TI hoists cover-ing lift capacities from 25 to 60 metric tons. This in-volves fitting a separate air tank, with two additional buttons also incorporated into the hand controllers. This air reservoir is auto-matically maintained at the full working air pres-sure and acts as a positive emergency braking system when required. The device becomes operable in the event of a severe reduc-tion or total loss of mains air pressure, with a two-handed control operation provided to avoid uninten-

tional lowering. One con-trol button selects between normal hoist operation and emergency lowering, with a second button providing braking to ensure a con-trolled lowering and safe grounding of the suspend-ed load under the action of its own dead weight.

Additional optional safety features include rack and pinion trolley drives, Delta-P overload protec-tion and load monitoring together with air, hydrau-lic, radio or electrical re-mote controllers. Special purpose hoists engineered for extreme conditions can be supplied to cover opera-tions at arctic temperatures down to 45C, together with underwater hoists for operation down to 70 me-ters below water levels.

Certification by Det Norske Veritas can also be provided on request, to comply with safety require-ments involving applica-tions for offshore cranes as well as power driven hoists. The standard ATEX classification is according to EC Directive on Haz-ardous Locations 94/9/EEC with increased spark protection also available if required to a rating EX II 2 GD IIC T4. b
