Guest Speaker: Eleesa Johnstone

Eleesa Johnstone works in the Field Education Unit in the School of Public Health and Social Work at QUT. With qualifications in Social Work, she teaches, support, supervises and liaises with social work and human service students during their field education placement. As part of this role, Eleesa has been working with a group of academics at QUT including Mark Brough, Greg Marston and Phil Crane to investigate student’s experiences of financial hardship while they are on placement. Students studying in these courses are required to complete between 550 to 1000 hrs of learning across two placement periods for their degree at a minimum of 3 days per week. This requirement offers significant benefits for students to fully immerse in the profession yet can present significant challenges for students financially and emotionally. This research offers an opportunity to examine and discuss WIL and how it may be explored to better meet the needs of students, the human service industry, the university and the social work profession.

Guest Speaker: Dr Cate Gribble

Dr Cate Gribble is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin University in Melbourne. Cate’s current research focus is on the employment outcomes of international students. Most recently, she has been working on an Australian Research Council Discovery project investigating issues surrounding international graduates and the transition to employment in fields of health, accounting and engineering.
