Our Membership AZBio is a not-for-profit, 501(c)6 trade association. Together with our Members we drive the Arizona bioscience industry’s growth at the state, national and international level. AZBio supports Arizona’s bioindustry statewide as an the unified voice of the bioscience industry in Arizona . AZBio strives to make Arizona a place where bioscience organizations can grow and succeed by working collaboratively with AZBio Members and Partners in the fields of: Agriculture Business and Finance Construction Community Development Distribution Education Economic Development Energy Government Healthcare Information Technology Law Manufacturing Natural Resource Management and

Conservation Professional and Workforce Development Research Testing Other professions involved in and

supporting the biosciences We also welcome students and K-12 educators at discounted rates encouraging Arizona’s future bioscience leaders to get involved and stay involved throughout their careers. AZBio is the exclusive state affiliate in Arizona of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the national association for biotechnology companies, a member of AdvaMed, the largest association representing medical devices, diagnostic products and medical information systems manufacturers, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. (PhRMA).

Our Industry In 2003, Arizona’s bioindustry clusters came together to form AZBio. A lot has happened since 2003.

We have seen the rise of new bioscience research institutes, and a network of incubators that stretch from Flagstaff to Tucson. Roche, Sanofi, Celgene, Merz, Fisher, and IMS Health acquired innovative life science companies that where born in Arizona, and stayed to become partners in our community and partners for growth.

Life is better thanks to medical device innovations from global leaders like Medtronic and Gore and emerging leaders including SynCardia, Ulthera, and Regenesis just to name a few. Arizona is leveraging its collaborative gene, with universities, companies, and institutions working together to target some of the worlds biggest challenges in health and healthcare as well as agricultural and industrial bio-based innovations.

Arizona has evolved from a state with isolated pockets of biotechnology players to a top emerging bioindustry sector.

The job is not finished...it’s only just beginning.

To make the transition from a top emerging market to a top tier bioscience state, we must work together from the State House to the lab and from the factory floor to the hospital ward. To take our place with global leaders means that we must lead in each phase, from discovery to development to delivery.

AZBio Members are in the business of embracing possibilities.

We have laid a solid foundation to build on by developing our research infrastructure, attracting great talent, and strengthening our economic environment in a way that says “Arizona is open for bio-business.”

Now is the time to leverage our investments and build on them. We must move forward faster and we will by continuing to expand our research infrastructure and talent base with a focus on commercializing great ideas and delivering them to the markets that benefit from them the most.

The world needs what Arizonans can deliver.

Let’s do it.

AZBio’s Key State Policy Initiatives for 2015

AZBio’s policy initiatives in 2015 focus on the path from Discovery to Development to Delivery of life science innovations

that will benefit the people of Arizona today and in the future.

DISCOVERY: New discoveries start us on a path to improve the human condition AND our life science innovations will help to bend the healthcare cost curve. Building our discovery pipeline requires that we maintain and build on our existing research infrastructure in our institutes and universities statewide. AZBio work with the Arizona Legislature to educate on the value that these investments create for our state and the people of Arizona.

The Federal SBIR and STTR programs provide critical funding for life science innovation but the lag time between a Phase I, Phase II or Phase III award can prevent these new technologies from progressing to the Development and Delivery stages. Arizona can help firms here by extending a 1) 1:1 matching grant to companies upon successful completion of a Phase I award (feasibility) and application for a Phase 2 (Prototype) SBIR/STTR award; or 2) .5:1 matching grant to firms upon successful completion of a Phase II award (Prototype) and application for a Phase III SBIR/STTR award for commercialization. Grant dollars must be specifically applied to 1) employee retention on the project; 2) new hires for the project; or 3) contract employees or consultants to the project located in Arizona. This will not only benefit the life science innovation pipeline but can be extended across all of Arizona’s technology innovation sectors.

DEVELOPMENT: Without investment and capital resources there is no growth. AZBio will work with our legislators to ensure that our R&D Tax Credit and Angel Investment tax credit programs continue to be properly funded and competitive as compared to top tier life science markets so that we can retain and attract the best and brightest high growth . In 2012, Congress approved the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA) which sets the users fees companies must pay to move new drugs, diagnostics or medical devices through the FDA approval process and d move on to the delivery stage. Arizona can both support new development happening here AND attract new innovators by offering a transferable tax cred-it for the amount of these user fees to firms that 1) have development and/or manufacturing op-erations based in Arizona; and 2) perform at least 30% of the clinical trials for the related product in the state. DELIVERY: Patient Access to life saving and life enhancing innovations benefits the people of Arizona. AZBio will work with our patient advocacy and health care delivery partners to ensure that Arizonans benefit from the innovations our industry creates. New Federal Legislation regarding Biosimilars will be shaped at the state level. AZBio will work with our industry partners and the healthcare community across the three D’s to insure that Arizona is a leader in legislation that provides for both high levels of patient safety and affordable access to life saving innovations. Developing Resources

Since its inception in 2003, AZBio has received generous support through a broad range of

corporations and community partners. Now in its second decade of operation, AZBio has aggressive goals to reach in delivering value to the bioindustry that is gaining momentum in our state. To achieve these goals we must continue to garner community support in the form of grants, fee for service contracts, sponsorship, and active participation from our Members. The more resources AZBio earns and receives from committed partners, the more we can reinvest in our community through AZBio benefits and services. In 2014, AZBio reinvested your support in

The White Hat Life Science Investor Conference, the first life science specific investor conference to be held in Arizona and featuring life science opportunities from here in Arizona and across the Rocky Mountain Southwest region.

New In 2015

AZBio Leadership Forums

What will it take to build our industry?

What will it take to build our businesses?

How can we help each other? These are questions that we must answer to become a top tier player on the global biotech stage. AZBio’s Board of Directors and AZBio Leadership are committed to finding these answers but we know that we need to reach out further to include the thoughts and talents of other leaders who are invested in our in-dustry’s growth and success. Beginning in 2015, AZBio will hold a Leadership Forum over dinner on the evening of each regularly sched-uled AZBio Board of Director’s meeting specifically for the leaders who are supporting our mission and in-vesting in AZBio at the Leadership Level and above. Unlike AZBio’s public events, The Leadership Forum offers an exclusive opportunity for life science leaders to exchange ideas and make connections in a private setting. Each AZBio Supporting Organization at the Leadership Level and above is provided with 2 dinner invitations for each quarterly session which can be used by your senior leadership and/or an invited guest of your choosing. AZBio Support Levels are a combination of your organization’s dues and committed support for 2015 either in cash or in kind. Amounts contributed in excess of your annual dues as set forth in the published schedule may be applied to event sponsorships, advertising opportunity’s or event tickets.
