November 2016

Dear Friend of Camp Colley,

As the group of kids put on life jackets to go canoeing on the

reservoir, one 9 year-old girl hung back, tears streaming down her

face. She told a concerned counselor that she was scared to step

into the canoe on what looked to her like a massive expanse of

water. It was Dasia’s first camping trip. Prior to visiting Camp Colley, an

overnight camp in the beautiful Coconino Forest north of Payson that

is owned by the City of Phoenix, her world was limited to the Phoenix

housing neighborhood in which she lives with her family. She was

overwhelmed and uncertain about what might happen.

After talking about her fears, Dasia climbed into the canoe alongside

a counselor who provided support, encouragement, and safety. When she

returned to camp, she talked with enthusiasm about being out on the water.

Dasia gained confidence in her ability to try new things and reach for success.

For 16 years, Camp Colley has offered opportunities to at-risk kids to take

healthy risks, build self-confidence, and experience success.

During Camp Season 2016 we served 832 youth, many of whom came from

the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, Housing Department,

and Neighborhood Services. Campers also came from Title 1 public elementary

schools, UMOM, Camp Audubon Adventures Summer Camp, Native Health,

and Special Olympics.

Your generous support enables the Camp Colley Foundation to provide

transformative experiences to disadvantaged, at-risk youth at Camp Colley.

Please help us prepare to welcome deserving kids in the summer of 2017.
