• Deadline (when?)• £££ (how much?)• Eligibility• Funder (who?)• Aims of the call (what and why ?)• Is your experience/expertise relevant?• Realistic timetable for delivery?• £££ is it enough?• £££ what will they fund?• Has the idea been funded before? (previous awards)• Likelihood of success?

– Title– Summary (background, context, why us?)– Aims and objectives (principles of approach)– Methodology (what are you going to do?)– Project plan/work programme– Resources needed (including project team)– Outcomes/outputs– Dissemination– Project and risk management
Proposal writing tips• Answer the question !• Always assume the reader knows very little• Use the appraisal scoring form to check you have answered all sections
fully• Accurate information. Read again and ask have you explained statements
clearly• Adapt content and style to the funding programme• The right font – follow the guidance• Presentation:- Keep language simple and avoid jargon- Layout is key. Reviewers will have tired eyes so make it easier for them !
Proposal writing tipsFRONTLOADING• Upfront state what the benefits are and how you will meet the
funders/clients needs and how you can solve their problems.
FOCUSSED ANSWERS NOT STORY TELLING• Answer each question and cover all areas usually specified in the funders
scoring criteria and focus on these points• If the client is looking for a very specific service respond only with
information about that service. STOP yourself from story telling• SMART objectives and clear timescale/milestones/outcomes.
Proposal writing tipsCLEAR STYLE• Short sentences, short paragraphs, no negative words or uncertainty, if
there is a gap in your provision draw attention away, use of diagrams and images.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE• Provide case studies/previous experience that are relevant eg sector
match, company/organisation size (SME, large, public, charity) match• Ensure you have the right team for the right job. Tailor CVs if necessary.
Proposal writing tipsMANAGEMENT• show you have the resources and experience to do the work in a cost-
effective way to meet the client's needs, hit deadlines and respond flexibly to changing situations (risks are there to be managed not avoided), and able to evaluate/monitor performance.
VALUE FOR MONEY• Emphasise business benefits, end-user benefits, service improvements,
risk reduction, low maintenance, quality, reliability, previous satisfied customers, cost benefits, innovative aspects of your delivery etc.
