Calculation Methods
Methods of Addition• Children need to know their number bonds to 10 and 20.

36• Then progress onto recording with
partitioning:
• 76 + 47 = 76 + 40 + 7 = 116 + 7
= 123
• Always start with the larger number first
24 + 12 = 36
+40 +7
76 116 123
Methods of Addition (continued…)
166+ 129 15 (9+6) 80 (60 + 20) 200 (100 + 100) 295
40 + 70 = 110
7 + 6 = 13
123 or 40 + 7
70 + 6
110 + 13

• An example using larger numbers e.g. 166 + 129

Methods of Subtraction• Again, children need to know their number bonds to 10 and
20!
• Next step is to use number lines to COUNT UP eg 48 - 29
+10+1
29 30
+8
40 48
• Children will then continue this method, but without the help of the number line and using larger numbers e.g. 783-356
• 356 360 = + 4• 360 400 = + 40• 400 700 = + 300• 700 783 = + 83

Methods of Subtraction……..(continued)
• The next step is to begin recording vertically, using partitioning e.g. 81 – 57 =
81 = 80 + 1 = 70 + 11- 57 = 50 + 7 = 50 + 7
20 + 4 = 24
• This then leads to the standard written method and will involve larger numbers .
81 754- 57 - 236 24 518

Multiplication – Grid Method
47 x 8 = x 40 78 320 56 376
Estimating very important e.g. 50 x 8 = 400
37 x 46 =x 30 7
40 1200 280 14806 180 42 222

Multiplying Decimals
4.7 x 8 = 37.6 x 40 71dp 8 320 56 37.6
Estimating very important e.g. 5 x 8 = 40
3.7 x 4.6 = 17.022dp x 30 7
40 1200 280 14806 180 42 222

This then leads to the short method
First using partitioning 84 ÷ 7 =
First we partition the 84 into a convenient multiple of 7 + the rest
84
70 + 14
10 + 2 = 12
This is probably the method that children struggle most with. This method as with multiplication enables pupils to understand how the numbers work together.

Feel free to ask children questions
Questions?
If you have any questions we will do our best to answer them.
How to help at home…
Parents can help by:
Assisting with homework; Playing maths games, such as snakes and ladders,
Connect 4, Guess Who, Monopoly or pairs. Playing on maths websites with them. Allowing children to pay in shops, weigh out fruit
when shopping, or bake cakes at home. Practical experiences and fun activities remain the
best ways for children to learn maths.
A big “Thank you” for attending
