VIP CLUBThe VIP (Very Important Proposers) Club is made up of

outstanding recruiters. It offers councils a way to publiclyhonor recruiters and show the importance of recruitment asan ongoing activity.

As of June 30, 2020, membership in the VIP Club stood at327,590 Knights who have collectively recruited 1,368,784new Knights. To date, 467 members have each recruited 100members; 89 have recruited 200 members; 31 have recruited300 members; and six have recruited 400 members. Thereare twelve members of the VIP Club who have each recruitedover 500 members; one who has recruited over 1,000members; two brother Knights who recruited over 2,000members; and one knight who has recruited over 3,000.

STAR COUNCIL AWARDSThe Star Council Award recognizes outstanding

achievement in membership, insurance and programming. In order to achieve the Star Council Award, a council mustearn the Father McGivney, Founder’s, and ColumbianAwards. Additionally, the council must be in good standing;having submitted required forms and (in the United Statesand Canada) being fully compliant with safe environmentrequirements.

During the 2019-2020 fraternal year, 1,927 councilsreceived the Star Council Award.

STAR DISTRICT AWARDSThe Star District Award recognizes outstanding

achievements in membership, insurance and overallexcellence by the councils within the territory of a districtdeputy. To earn this award, a district deputy must reach 70%of combined council membership quotas, the FoundersAward must be earned by every council within the district,and at least one council in the district must earn the StarCouncil Award.

During the 2019-2020 fraternal year, 475 districts receivedthe Star District Award.

NEW COUNCIL DEVELOPMENTAWARDS

New council development and council reactivations arekey to the Order’s growth and our goal of establishing aKnights of Columbus presence in every parish. During thepast fraternal year 196 new councils were instituted and 181councils reactivated.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM AWARDS The Annual Service Program Awards competition recognizes

councils that conduct an outstanding program in each areaof the “Faith in Action” program categories: faith, community,family and life. State Council winners are eligible to compete

at the Supreme Council level. Additionally, this year thesupreme knight and the board of directors are recognizingthe best “Leave No Neighbor Behind” program by awardingthe council that has best exemplified that mission by theirwork supporting their brothers, families, the Church andcommunity during the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic.

The first place winners and a brief description of theiractivity can be found below:

FAITH PROGRAMS St. Francis of Assisi Council 16356Naval Submarine Base King’s Bay, GeorgiaKeep Naval Submarine Base Catholic Community Alive

The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community, which servesthe spiritual needs of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, waswithout a full-time priest since October 2017. To address thespiritual needs of the community in the absence of a chaplain,the Knights from Council 16356 went above-and-beyond in service to their fellow Catholics. Throughout the year, these Knights oversaw a weekly Eucharistic Holy Hour on Wednesdays and prepared the base’s shared, non-denominational chapel for Mass every Sunday. Knights alsobrought together the community’s Catholic families with amonthly Family Prayer and Movie Night, designed to providemonthly spiritual and fraternal benefits. In October of 2019,Naval Submarine Base King’s Bay finally received a full-timeCatholic chaplain – who was able to immediately serve in hispriestly capacity due to the infrastructure the Knights hadkept alive during the two years without a priest.

FAMILY PROGRAMS Rev. Cardinal Primate Stefan Wyszyński Council 15672Czestochowa, PolandA Family Strengthened Through God – Consecration tothe Holy Family

To celebrate International Women’s Day in a distinctlyCatholic way, the Knights of Council 15672 decided to focuson the role of women in families and to consecrate all the families of their parish to the Holy Family. On Saturday,March 7, the council hosted a gathering for families to provideopportunities to reflect on married life with the Holy Familyas a model, a lecture on modern day obstacles that Catholicfamilies face, and a place for husbands and children tocelebrate their wives and mothers. The following day, duringMass, the council chaplain and pastor consecrated thefamilies to the Holy Family and a collection was taken up fora parish family with a child with special needs.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Bishop Hill Council 5468Campbell River, British ColumbiaChristmas Hamper Fund – Food for Families

Since 1972, the Knights of Council 5468 have led thecharge of serving the less fortunate of Campbell River withtheir annual Christmas Hamper Fund. Collecting donationsfrom the community, the Christmas Hamper Fund uses with a budget of $115,000 and to provide 1154 “hampers”specifically for families and individuals who face financial

difficulties. In each “hamper”, the knights provide perishableand non-perishable food items as well as toys for childrenand other gifts for seniors. Additional attention is given tosenior citizens and those who with mobility limitations. Byproviding logistics and manpower, Council 5468 has builttheir Christmas Hamper Fund into a massive aid to those inneed today.

LIFE PROGRAMS Blessed Mykolay Charnetsky Council 16848Zolochiv, UkraineAiding Children with Special Needs

When children with special needs require help, themembers of Blessed Mykolay Charnetsky Council 16848always go above and beyond to offer their personal support.On multiple occasions, council members raised funds topurchase medicine and other items for suffering children. Ayoung boy with cerebral palsy needed a walker — the councilpurchased a custom walker for his use. A family needed life-saving donations of medicine for their child and the councilpurchased and personally imported the medicine for thefamily. One council member even traveled across Europe topurchase the medicine in Germany and bring it back for a child in Ukraine. The total amount donated by the councilfor the medicines was more than $1,400. In addition, incelebration of the Feast of St. Nicholas, the council donated50 gifts, worth $15,000 in total, to children in support of theirongoing care. In fulfilling its mission to support those withspecial needs, the council provided support for 50 childrenthis fraternal year.

INTERNATIONAL FAMILY OF THE YEARThe Family of Jaime and Laura Morales Bishop Maurice F. Burke Council 4031Cody, Wyoming

Jaime Morales is a Fourth Degree Knight and 15-yearmember of the Order. Jaime, his wife Laura and their fourdaughters have faithfully served their parish and communityin many ways, providing extensive service and support to theparish, council and local community.

They have worked to show hospitality to new and returningparishioners after the parish Spanish Masses, started anannual Cinco de Mayo fundraising dinner, planned a feast dayMass honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe (including a re-enactment of the Marian apparition to Juan Diego), helpedto incorporate La Posada into the parish Christmascelebrations, and worked with the Knights to organize liveStations of the Cross during Holy Week.

Through their actions as a family they have helped theirpastor minister to a growing Hispanic population in theCatholic community of Cody, Wyoming. Additionally, alldaughters, Abigail (24), Jessica (21), Victoria (18) and Nathalia(17), have each lived their faith openly, particularly advocatingfor a culture of life. The Morales family’s faith has beeninfused into the community programs they have organize asvisible in the recognitions they have received.

Their pastor, Father Clark, calls the Morales family “trulyone of the finest families in our parish” and are “veryimportant to the integration of both [Mexican and American]cultures in our parish life.”

LEAVE NO NEIGHBOR BEHIND Most Precious Blood Council 6134 and St. FinbarCouncil 15728 Brooklyn, New YorkProviding Food During the Pandemic

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, over thecourse of three months, members of Councils 6134 and15728 in Brooklyn have collectively packaged and distributeda week’s worth of food to 100 local families. Beginning withsix families who were unable to receive unemployment or stimulus checks, the councils used personal loans topurchase and deliver food to families in need. The numberof aided neighbors has now risen to 600 total men, womenand children. Additionally, council officers continue to reachout to members of their parish and grow the number ofvolunteers. These Knights held blood drives and helped feedthe front line medical staff. These brother knights arecommitted to leave no neighbor behind.

COLLEGE COUNCILS AWARDSMore than 200 college Knights, representing 90 colleges

and universities, attended the 55th annual College CouncilsConference, September 27-29, 2019, in New Haven,Connecticut.

32 college councils earned the distinction of Star Council,through achievement in membership, insurance andprogramming.

Council 1477 at the University of Notre Dame in SouthBend, Ind., received the award for highest net gain in

membership, bringing in 75 new members. Council 17039 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, earned the award for highest percentage gain in membership byexpanding its roster by 63.15 percent.

Council 10211 at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan.,was recognized for the highest net gain in insurancemembers by adding 6 new insurance members. Council16425 at Wright State University in Dayton, OH., won the award for highest percent gain in insurance with 9.0percent growth.

The Faith Activity Award was presented to Council 8970at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO., for their effortsrenew devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist on campus. Thiscouncil organized and led a weekly, overnight adorationprogram through the Advent and Lenten seasons. In additionto promotion, organizing sign ups, and filling spots, councilmembers made themselves available when adorers did notshow up so that our Lord was never left alone.

Council 16464 at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX., wasawarded the Family Activity Award for its family Massprogram. Once a month, these Brother Knights invited theirfamily members to attend Sunday Mass with them at thecampus’ Catholic Student Center. During the Mass, councilmembers sang in the choir, served as altar servers, lectorsand ushers. Following the Mass, the council prepared a mealto enjoy with their families. For some council members, thismonthly experience built upon a strong family faith lifeexperienced at home, while for others, it allowed them to re-evangelize their family in their shared Catholic faith.

Council 9224 at Loras College in Dubuque, IA., receivedthe Community Activity Award for their commitment tobuilding Catholic community on campus and abroad. In orderto challenge “hook-up” culture on campus, these BrotherKnights arranged for a date auction where Catholic womencould bid on a group date with council members. The groupdate consisted of Mass led by the council Chaplain, a shareddinner, and an evening at a roller-skating rink. The proceedsfrom this event were used to sponsor a water well in Africa.

Council 16859 at University of Waterloo in Waterloo,Ontario, was awarded this year’s Life Activity Award inrecognition of their work to build a culture of life in theircommunity. This council organized a fundraiser dinner andinvited pro-life speakers, including a member of Parliament,to address the challenges faced by young adults andstudents when defending the lives of the unborn. Followingthe speaking program, attendees prayed for the victims ofabortion at a special Mass. The funds collected at this dinnerwent towards the Student Pro-Life Initiative Fund.

The Outstanding College Council Award was presentedto Council 7913 at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City, N.J.Council 7913 hosted a weekly, hour-long radio show on campus called “Knightlife.” Council members served as

hosts and discussed a wide range of topics relating to theCatholic Church and theology. The radio show opened andclosed every week with prayer and there was a regularannouncement of upcoming council events and an invitationfor men to join. These efforts resulted in the council doublingits membership quota.

One of the council’s most impressive events centeredaround their participation in the Christian Refugee ReliefProgram. Council 7913 partnered with a local CopticOrthodox Church to serve the Egyptian refugee communitythere, and volunteered three nights a week as tutors for therefugee children.

The faith-filled witness of these men has inspired Catholicsand non-Catholics alike. Attracted by their example, fivefellow students enrolled in RCIA with intent to join the councilas soon as they join the Church.

The runner up for Outstanding College Councilwas Council 13242 at George Washington University inWashington D.C. Council 13242 was a triple star council thatbrought on 16 new members. This council sponsored a strongfield of programs that included a preparatory pilgrimage priorto a 3rd Degree Ceremony; a Coats for Kids drive; mealoutreach to the homeless; a fundraiser to support a parish inWest Africa; and a fund drive for the local pregnancy center.

Third place for the Outstanding College Council wasCouncil 13160 at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Council13160 ensured recruitment success with a “Faith throughFraternity” retreat which led to 8 men joining the council.Over the course of last fraternal year, this council brought on 26 new members. They also witnessed to their faiththrough campus-wide Stations of the Cross during Lent anda weekly rosary program and gave back to the communityby serving meals to those in need and partnering with Habitatfor Humanity.

These awards only briefly highlight the charitable initiativesperformed by the Knights of Columbus on nearly 400 collegeand university campuses.

“TO BE A PATRIOT” AWARDSThe “To Be a Patriot Award” honorees are those Fourth

Degree assemblies that have conducted outstanding,patriotic programs.

District winners were submitted to the vice suprememasters, who selected the best program in their respectiveprovinces. The Supreme Master then appointed a committeeto select the top three program winners.

In Jackson, Michigan sixty two percent of the members of this assembly participated in the “That They Never BeForgotten Program.” Jackson Area Assembly #2196 workedto place a modern battle cross monument to honor veteransand partnered with the VFW and American Legion in erecting

the memorial. Through this program the assembly gainedrecognition and improved their recruitment of new membersall while paying tribute to veterans: those that came home, andthose who lost their lives. The dedication ceremony includedpresentation of the colors, and a memorial service. Followingthe service, all marched to the local cemetery where thenames of the deceased service members were read.

Moral Injury ConferenceMonsignor Bruno Hubertus Assembly 1791New Braunfels, Texas

Helping Combat Veterans contend with moral injuriesearned the Monsignor Bruno Hubertus Assembly #1791 ofNew Braunfels, Texas the “To Be A Patriot Award.” Thisprogram was conducted at Lackland Air Force Base followingFaithful Navigator Will Villegas attending the Warriors ToLourdes Military Pilgrimage, where he learned about theimplications of moral injury. Over 150 active duty and retiredmilitary attended this program, at Lackland. The logistics ofthis event were handled by Sir Knights. The event helpedmilitary members to identify moral injuries that negativelyaffect their physical well-being with the ultimate goal of theevent being to offer a source of healing and reconciliation.

Bikes for Veterans Father Joseph O’Callahan S.J. Assembly 2820Las Vegas, Nevada

The Fr. Joseph O’Callahan, SJ Assembly #2820 of Las Vegas, Nevada earned their “To Be A Patriot Award” with the partnership with the “Forgotten-not-Gone Veterans’Organization.” The assembly expended more than 600volunteer hours in raising funds for special “velocycles” whichare three and four wheels bicycles. Bike riding has been foundto a calming influence for those with PTSD and who havethoughts of suicide. Some of these specially made velomobilerecumbent trikes cost as much as $5,000 for veterans withphysical disabilities to purchase. Members of this assemblywere also aware that Nevada had one of the highest veteransuicide rates in the nation. In this way the assembly is helpingto take a proactive step in addressing the triggers of suicideamong veterans and helping to diminish the negative effects.

CIVIC AWARDSThe Civic Award is presented annually as a tribute to the

spirit of patriotism and national pride exemplified in activitiesconducted by Fourth Degree assemblies. Assembliesconducting a minimum of four different patriotic programsduring the fraternal year are eligible for the Civic Award.

During the 2019-2020 fraternal year, 326 assembliesreceived the Civic Award.

Bob completed the year at 184 percent of his quota. He achieved a volume per member of $11,886.19, with a gross volumeof $129,928,000.
