• To understand the importance of Surah 1 to Muslims.

• To understand the meaning of Surah 1.

What is a Surah? • Chapter or a portion of the Qur’an. • Surah means a ‘degree’ or ‘step’. • Some are long some are short.

• Each verse of a Surah is called a Ayat which means ‘a sign’.

• Every Surah has it’s own title.

Surah 1• Surah one is the first Surah in the Qur’an.

• It is a prayer for God’s guidance.

• It is called Al- Fatihah which means ‘Opening Chapter’.

• There are seven verses in Al- Fatihah.

• Surah Al- Fatihah was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Mecca.

• Al- Fatihah outlines the nature of Allah and belief in Allah.

Al- Fatihah

1. In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

2. Praise be to God, The Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds.

3. Most Gracious, Most Merciful.4. Master of the Day of Judgment.5. Thee do we worship, And Thine aid we seek.6. Show us the straight way,7. The way of those on whom, Thou hast bestowed

Thy Grace, Is not wrath, And who go not astray.

In groups explain what the meaning of your allocated verse means in relation to the

nature of God and belief in God.

Is your verse related to shirk? What do the words say about Allah? How might your verse

impact on the life of a Muslim?

Verse 1

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

• Each Surah starts with this with the exception of Surah 9 (Tauba).

• It is recited in daily prayers and often before many personal and everyday activates.

• Most common words to describe God’s attributes. • The translation into English does not have the same

level of meaning. This is why the Quran should always be read with the Arabic for reference.

Verse 2

Praise be to God. The Cherisher and Sustainer of the world.

Verse 3

Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Verse 4

Master of the day of Judgement.

Verse 5

Thee do we worship, And Thine aid we seek.

Verse 6

Show us the straight way

Verse 7

The way of those whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, Those whose portion is not wrath, And

who go not astray.
