Cleaning
Clean on a routine basis, according to facility policy. Disinfect the device when contamination occurs. Appropriate cleaning/disinfecting agents:
• Wipe the thermometer with a cloth dampened with warm water and a mild detergent solution.
• Disinfect as needed with 70% isopropyl alcohol or 10% chlorine bleach, or a non-staining disinfectant.
• Do not immerse or soak the thermometer or probe in fluid.
• To clean the removable probe well, wipe inside and outside with disinfecting solutions listed above. If necessary, the probe well can be immersed in a mild detergent solution as necessary for cleaning. Make sure parts are dry before reassembling the thermometer.

Probe and Probe Covers
Probes and probe wells are color-coded and removable
• Blue for Oral/Axillary temperatures
• Red for Rectal temperatures
Remember to use the matching probe and probe well together
Only Welch Allyn probe covers should be used with this thermometer
• Probe covers are single use only! • Do not reuse probe covers, as this will result in
inaccurate readings

1. Withdraw the probe to turn thermometer on.
2. Press Mode Selection button to select the adult axillary mode. The adult icon will have a flashing torso icon and display “adult axillary”.
3. Apply probe cover.
4. Lift patient’s arm, place probe as high as possible into the axilla in proper vertical position (‘align with the spine’) and place patient’s arm snugly down around probe. This must be performed against bare skin.
5. “Walking” segments will appear on the screen indicating measurement is in progress.
6. Temperature result will appear in approximately 12-15 seconds. The display shows the measurement site, temperature scale, and patient reading for 30 seconds or until probe is replaced in the well.
7. Discard probe cover.
8. Return probe to the probe well. The LCD display will go blank.
Age Range for Adult = 18 years and older
NOTE: Use BLUE probe and probe well for axillary temperature measurements 8
Axillary Measurements for Pediatrics
1. Withdraw the probe with the blue ejection button from blue probe well to turn thermometer on.
2. Press the Mode Selection button to select the pediatric axillary mode. The pediatric icon is a crawling toddler and displays “Ped Axillary”.
3. Follow the same procedure for measuring an adult temperature. The pediatric measurement will take approximately 10 seconds.
Age Range for Pediatric = 17 years and younger
NOTE: Use BLUE probe and probe well for axillary temperature measurements
MC12684 9
Axillary Measurement Inaccuracies
Inaccurate axillary measurements can be caused by:
• Probe contact with clothing, bandages, electrodes, etc.
• Poor tissue contact
• Prolonged exposure of the axilla to ambient air
• Forgetting to switch thermometer into proper axillary mode
MC12684 10
Rectal Measurements
1. Obtain the red probe well and probe with the red ejection button. Remove the blue probe well and probe, and install the red.
2. Withdraw the probe to turn thermometer on.
3. Observe the icon with the lower half of the body flashing and displays “Rectal” indicating Rectal Mode.
4. Apply probe cover. The use of lubricant is optional.
• If lubrication is needed, only use a small amount
5. Insertion for an adult should be 5/8” (1.5cm) and less for infants and children.
6. “Walking” segments will appear on the screen indicating measurement is in progress.
7. Temperature result will appear in approximately 12-15 seconds. The display shows the measurement site, temperature scale, and patient reading for 30 seconds or until probe is replaced in the well.
8. Discard probe cover.
9. Return probe to the probe well. The LCD display will go blank.

Monitor Mode
Continuous monitoring mode is equivalent to using a glass/mercury thermometer. • Not recommended for use over 3-5 minutes. • Measurements are not stored in memory. • Useful for double-checking quick predictive readings; i.e.
an infant exposed to cool ambient temperatures.
The thermometer enters Monitor Mode automatically if: • The probe has been removed and not used for 60 seconds, or • The patient temperature is too low to allow the device to take it in
predictive mode.
You can also manually place the thermometer into Monitor Mode (see next slide)
MC12684 12
Using Monitor Mode
To use monitor mode: 1. Select the correct probe/probe well.
2. Apply a probe cover.
3. Take the patient’s reading in the appropriate place. Continue to hold the probe in position after the temperature is displayed.
4. Press the Mode Selection button until Monitor Mode indicator appears on the LCD.
5. Keep the thermometer in place for the required duration:
• Oral 3 minutes
• Axillary 5 minutes
• Rectal 3 minutes
6. Record the temperature before removing the probe from the site.
7. Discard the probe cover. Upon returning the probe to the well, the thermometer will return to predictive mode.
