Christmas Day!

PresidentHello hello hello,

First of I would like to wish all our students a very happy Christ-mas, and what a Christmas day we have organised for you. Secondly best of luck to you all with the upcoming Semester 1 exams, remember we are here for you so please contact us if you need a helping hand with anything like study tips, and so on so forth. Have a look out for exam de-stress week starting next Monday December 12th, we have plenty on to help calm the pressures of studying.

With the breaking news of the Budget 2012, IT Tralee students are the first in the country set to march to combat the shocking news. We are expecting quite a good turn out as we have invited every student in IT Tralee along with lecturers, parents and second level students and members of the community.

IT Tralee Students’ Union are also fighting very hard on a national level. We have been in-volved in the occupation of government buildings. This is my account - Labours doors were securely locked when we arrived, there was no chance of entry & they sounded the alarm so we ran to dep’ of jobs...all 9 occupied the office but a staff member remained in the room, we couldn’t detain him against his will so we had to allow him to leave, in the process the guards forced through and threatened to use pepper spray, numerous guards entered the room and back-up quickly arrived, the guards removed us from the premises and we dispersed in groups arranging to meet at the department for social protection. The first 4 to arrive saw an opportune moment where the lift was open & made a run for it. They quickly occupied the room and remained there for over 2 hours. After numerous Gardaí arrived the door was bat-tered in and the 4 were arrested and brought to store street Garda station. They have now been released and the case will go to the DPP.

It is extremely important to remember that just because the Budget 2012 has been an-nounced; it does not mean that we are going to stop fighting tooth and nail against these hikes and cuts. The occupation of government buildings was stage 7 of our national plan. It is being kept very secret at the moment, but there will be more and more stages of this escalat-ing campaign, and please rest assured that this campaign will keep going until we get what we want.Michael Thompson,

SocietiesAs it is exam season all is quiet on the societies front. One of the major events that

took place recently was the L.G.B.T Pink training.

Last weekend, the IT Tralee LGBT society sent 24 delegates from the college to Gal-way for the annual USI Pink Training.

This training is of vital importance to anyone that is LGBT or allies/friends also. It gives an amazing insight to the difficulties faced, and offers valuable training to

anyone who needs it in many different areas, including sexual health, Allies Work-shops (for friends of LGBT), coming out workshops and sexual empowerment

workshops. The weekend was a great success for the LGBT society, sending more delegates than ever before and was open for anyone to attend no matter their ori-

entation.

A great weekend was had by all, and a very worthwhile experience. We’re counting down the days until next year’s pink training next year. If you are interested in join-ing the LGBT Society you can contact the Societies Office or email lgbt@students.

Good luck with your exams and see you all next semester for Societies refresher day!

Student Assistance Fund(S.A.F)

IT Tralee secures more money for the students that are most in need! There is a budget allocated to the HEA every year for the alleviation of issues surrounding access to education for disadvantaged students. This budget is spread between a number of funds including the student assistance fund. This year for the first time the amount each college receives will be based on the following criteria a) 50% based on total student numbers, b) 50% based on access student numbers e.g. disabled students, student from lower socio-economic backgrounds, mature students etc. to ensure that the fund is targeted at those most in need.

It had initially been envisaged that the Student Assistance Fund would be allocated €5 million similar to last year, however; USI and the HEA have been able to provide another €4 million to the fund for this year by reworking a number of other budgets. The result of this is that the SAF will have a total of €9 million for the current academic year.

Below we have included a table below which outlines how much each college received last year, the additional amount and the amount that will be allocated this year.

This is massive news for students in IT Tralee who are facing extreme financial pressures.

Struggling with a subject? Need extra tuition?

If you find you’re struggling with a particular subject, you could need some extra tuition from a peer. We might be able to help! Your students’ union has a new grinds system set up, to ensure you get the best for your money.

There is new quality assurance procedure, where any student giving grinds will have to provide proof of their grades. Grinds are normally in the region of €15-€25 per hour for one to one session but it does depend on the person giving grinds. We don’t have the grinds you’re looking for? Let us know and we can advertise this for you on our website, Facebook, Twitter and S.U.R.F. magazine!

Top of the class? Fancy making some extra money??

If you are in 3rd year or above, and have a grade of B2 (equivalent or higher) you could earn extra cash by giving grinds to students who might be finding a particular subject difficult. Students often look for help coming up to exams, this is the ideal way to make use of your knowledge and earn some cash!

To ensure our students get the best from their grinds, you will have to provide proof of your grades and book an appointment with Niall, your Education Officer and sign up today.
