Watch the video and answer these questions 1. What do the scientists want to know? 2. What data will the scientist collect? 3. How will this data help scientists answer -- make claims about -- their questions?

Writing a claimDo not use personal PronounsWrite a statement that answers the question or problem

Example: Is air matter?◦Claim- Air is matter because it is a mixture of gases.

1. When we make a claim, what do we need to follow it up with? 2. Which piece of art is the most scientific?

Page 9: Surface Tension CER. Notebook Set-Up Do Now SWBAT analyze how surface tension effects the amount of drops a penny can hold by writing a claim, evidence,

Claim Whenever we make a claim, we need to back it up with evidence and reasoning.

Always ask yourself these three questions to answer a CER. 1. What’s the answer to the question?2. How do I know?3. Why should someone agree with me?

Page 10: Surface Tension CER. Notebook Set-Up Do Now SWBAT analyze how surface tension effects the amount of drops a penny can hold by writing a claim, evidence,

Collecting Evidence:Read the Surface Tension Article

What is Surface Tension?Evidence: Surface tension is the “skin” that is created

by water when particles join together. How does surface tension affect water?

Inference: On a flat surface, surface tension will keep water drops together.

Water Molecules and Surface Tension

H2O - Water

1. What observations can you make about the molecules?2. What is the charge on the Oxygen? The Hydrogen?

They don’t want to separate from each other!

Focus Question: How does surface tension affect water?

Write a claim to answer this question based on the article evidence. (statement using no personal pronouns that answers the question or problem)Claim: Surface tension causes water to cling to other water molecules.

How does surface tension affect water in space?

Write a claim - Answer the question• No personal pronouns• Use your own knowledge about water

Example – Surface tension will keep water in space together.1. How can we test how surface tension affects water in space?

Example Evidence:

Water in SpaceEvidence: Water forms a sphere in space. When prodded water moves but remains circular.

1. What is a claim? 2. Whenever you have a claim, what should you back it up with? 3. Explain what reasoning is in your own words.

Page 24: Surface Tension CER. Notebook Set-Up Do Now SWBAT analyze how surface tension effects the amount of drops a penny can hold by writing a claim, evidence,

Use these definitions to support your analysis of Mr. Wallace’s C.E.R. Statement

Claim: A statement or conclusion that answers the problem or question

Evidence: Scientific data that supports the claim. The data needs to be appropriate and sufficient to support the claim.

Reasoning: A justification that connects the evidence to the claim. It shows why the data counts as evidence by using appropriate and sufficient scientific principals.

Page 25: Surface Tension CER. Notebook Set-Up Do Now SWBAT analyze how surface tension effects the amount of drops a penny can hold by writing a claim, evidence,

Example: C.E.R. Water in Space Water in space will form into a sphere shape. The video of the astronaut confirms this claim. As seen, the water particles, when released from the container, clung to each other. This reaction formed a spherical shape which remained in tact even when the surface of the water was broken when prodded. Therefore, the claim that water will form into a sphere in a weightless environment is correct because of surface tension. A force pulls on each molecule with equal tension on all sides towards the center, which causes a sphere to form.

1. Read through the CER statement and highlight any vocabulary terms. 2. Define any unfamiliar words using context words. 3. Highlight the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning using your definitions using different colors

Page 26: Surface Tension CER. Notebook Set-Up Do Now SWBAT analyze how surface tension effects the amount of drops a penny can hold by writing a claim, evidence,

Example: C.E.R. Water in Space CLAIM: Water in space will form into a sphere shape. EVIDENCE: The video of the astronaut confirms this claim. As seen, the water particles, when released from the container, clung to each other. This reaction formed a spherical shape which remained in tact even when the surface of the water was broken. REASONING: Therefore, the claim that water will form into a sphere in a weightless environment is correct because of surface tension. Write your finalized version1. Claim (statement or conclusion that answers the question)2. Evidence (Use 1 pieces of evidence from each set of

data or observations)3. Reasoning (explain how your data supports a

scientific concept that is stated)

Should be at least a paragraph in length No personal pronouns!

Problem: How Does Surface Tension Affect Water?

Claim: A statement or conclusion that answers the problem or question

1. Write a claim:◦ Include the amount of drops◦ No personal pronouns

Sentence Starter:Surface tension affects water by…

Page 29: Surface Tension CER. Notebook Set-Up Do Now SWBAT analyze how surface tension effects the amount of drops a penny can hold by writing a claim, evidence,

Reasoning: Make ConnectionsUse the evidence to back up your claim.Uses scientific principles or facts to support the claim.Argue your point without using personal pronouns or colorful “fluff” Science writing should sound boring. It is expository.
