Overview of position
The role of a Core Volunteer is to assist the Chapter with various functions. The functions often require a high degree of independence in the volunteer from the chapter.
Essential Functions1) Be a Surfrider ambassador and help get our mission and message out to the public
2) Help organize various events, campaigns and programs
3) Run an outreach event or beach cleanup with complete autonomy

Core Volunteer Essential Function #1: Be a Surfrider ambassador and help get our mission and message out to the public.
Mission StatementThe Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches for all people, through Conservation, Activism, Research, and Education.
Surfrider BackgroundIn 1984, a coalition of surfers from Malibu,
CA were gathered and led by Surfrider Foundation founder's Glenn Hening, Lance Carson and Tom Pratte, to fend off environmental mis-management, and to represent the voice of the surfing community.
The Surfrider Foundation, now in its 25th year, has since expanded to over 50,000 members in 80 chapters world-wide.
San Diego Chapter HistoryStarted in 1992 as one of the first in
Surfrider's Chapter Network Water testing focus for the first few years,
coined 'Hold On To Your Butt' in late 90's Around 2000 there was a switch to more
policy-based initiatives (2002 sewage infrastructure lawsuit, etc.)
Executive Committee grew, Advisory Committee started and Core Volunteers developed

Major Campaigns and Programs
Core Volunteer Essential Function #2:Help organize various events, campaigns and programs
RISE ABOVE PLASTICSContact Keri: [email protected] Above Plastics campaign is a Surfrider
initiative to reduce the use of single-use plastics in response to the North Pacific Garbage Patch and effects on the marine environment.
This campaign is organized as an empowerment tool and Core Volunteers are encouraged to create their own initiatives to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
Core Volunteers are also needed to help implement plastic bag bans and other initiatives occurring county-wide.

KNOW YOUR H2OContact Jared: [email protected] of the Surfrider Foundation’s
Integrated Water Campaign (IWC). Goal: to educate all citizens on the causes of
freshwater and seawater pollution, and to present and advocate for practical and environmentally sound solutions.
Core Volunteers, especially those with engineering or political backgrounds, are needed to assist with campaign initiatives, community outreach and public education. Contact Jared to find out when the next KYH2O Meeting is.
BORDER SEWAGEContact Dan: [email protected] pollution is a huge concern in
the southwest corner of San Diego County. Rainy season run-off from the Tijuana River brings a plethora of garbage, tires, refrigerators, and even strains of polio not found in the U.S.
The Border Sewage Campaign is an exciting new coalition that is forming to address some of the pollution concerns in and around the US-Mexico Border.
Core Volunteers are needed to help get the campaign up and running. Contact Dan to get involved today!

educational outreach program for kids and students.
Volunteers must attend KFCW Presentation Training to be able to present.
Most presentations are during school hours, so volunteers should have day-time availability.
KFCW Program is also undergoing expansion to include a Kids for Clean Water Day, and other kids-oriented events. Contact Jenn to be a part of this exciting opportunity!

[email protected] attend a training before you’re able to test.Testing happen 1-2 times/month.

No training necessary. Clean-ups are 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. Need core volunteers to help set up table, pass out gloves,
bags, data cards, and direct volunteers.
Hold On To Your ButtContact Donna: [email protected] butts are the #1 most littered item in the
world.Hold on to Your Butt is a campaign geared at
encouraging people to stop littering their butts, which are made of plastic and do not biodegrade.
We have signs and ash-cans set up all over town, have a hotline to report litter-bugs, and have an annual HOTYB Day, where we rally in four locations county wide to increase awareness.

Encourage home and landowners to remove non-native plants and use native plants (which require less watering & less fertilizer=less run-off).
Encourage all citizens to implement composting in their homes and gardens or worm bins in their apartments.
Core Volunteers needed to help event planning for OFG Day in the fall, organize educational outings, and help plan OFG activities, such as seed collecting, etc.
