Quality Assurance & Standards

We follow stringent quality assurance guidelines & procedures. Arresters are subjected to numerous quality tests & controls to ensure high reliability & ongoing customer satisfaction.Quality assurance is performed in three stages: 1. Measurement of ZnO character-istics through a fully automated test facility. 2. Measurement of material quality and dimensional accuracy. 3. Full assembly and testing for the measurement of perform-ance characteristics such as leakage current, reference voltage and partial discharge. Our quality reputation extends throughout our entire product line and beyond to the customer site where the product is installed.

All of our Surge Arresters conform to the requirements of international quality standards while our quality and environmental management systems are certifi ed to ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 respectively.

Maintenance & Service by CG Sales Networks

The products are self contained, maintenance free and require no spares over their entire life span. We recommend regular and periodic checks in accordance with pre-specifi ed schedules (indicated in the instruction manuals supplied with the arresters).

We provide solutions to all of your technical requirements through our highly quali-fi ed engineers, who have extensive experience in the fi eld. The service engineers and technicians from the CG Services Division can provide support for erection and on-site commissioning.

Background & Development

Surge arresters are used to protect power system installations and equipment against voltage surges caused by lightning, switching operations and abnormal service conditions. Generally arresters are connected in parallel with the equipment to be protected, typically between phase and ground.

Metal oxide arresters, without spark gaps, consist of an active element which is a highly non-linear ceramic resistor essentially composed of Zinc Oxide. Fine Zinc Oxide crystals are surrounded by other metal oxides (additives).

It is well-known that an effective surge protection device must demonstrate the following characteristics: > Extremely non-linear Voltage-Current characteristic that enables them to operate

only under transient conditions > Low power loss under normal operating conditions > Suffi cient energy-handling capability > High reliability and long life > Robust design and construction

Our Zinc Oxide surge arresters meet all of these requirements. We have a modern plant for the manufacture of Zinc Oxide arresters based on technical know-how from Hitachi Ltd., Japan. We have not only been able to master this technology but are also embarking on new fi elds of applications.

We manufacture various ZnO element sizes. These provide surge arresters with different energy handling capabilities.

All surge arresters in this catalog are designed and tested in line with the ANSI-IEEE C62.11 and/or IEC 60099-4 standards to fi t the customer’s need. Additional tests at -50C are performed to meet the temperature requirements for the Canadian market.

Testing

Our ZnO elements and arresters undergo stringent quality assurance and test procedures at every stage. CGL has a fully automated test facility. This also includes an acceptance and conformance facility as stipulated by the ANSI-IEEE, CSA or IEC standards for specifi c applications. The test facility is capable of testing elements for energy handling, lightning current performance, AC & DC characteristics and power loss.For standard acceptance tests, the plant has comprehensive facilities to test com-pletely assembled arrester units in a specially designed Faraday Cage.Each complete arrester unit must pass electrical tests for reference voltage, residual voltage & partial discharge. These tests are in addition to the 100% production testing performed on the metal oxide valve elements. Each arrester is also subjected to a leak test to ensure the integrity of the sealing system.

ZnO Polymer Housed Surge Arresters For nominal system voltages up to 161 kV

Introduction

The new generation of polymer housed surge arresters incorporates a superior polymer material that is recognized by the industry.Our station class polymer surge arresters are designed & tested in accordance with the ANSI - IEEE C62.11 and IEC-60099-4 standards. These polymer surge arresters are suitable for both indoor & outdoor applications. Additional tests at -50 C° are performed to meet the temperature requirements for the Canadian market.

These surge arresters have the following features:

> Excellent protection against the ingress of moisture > Improved cantilever strength > High fault current capability > Excellent protective characteristics > Light weight > High durability > Superior performance in the presence of contamination

The type ZPL2 station class arresters offer the benefi ts of polymer housings for nominal system voltages up to 161 kV. The ZPL2 arresters are approximately 1/5 the weight of the porcelain equivalent resulting in ease of handling and installation.

Page 7: Surge Arrestors America

Pressure Relief Capability

> Increases reliability and availability by shifting a number of maintenance critical components to the mainland; by applying hybrid transformer designs in combi-nation with on-line monitoring systems;

> The onshore booster reduces the short circuit currents for the submarine cable and offshore platform HV equipment and allows for smaller installed reactive power on the offshore platform;

> No need for a separate SVC, as the wind turbine generators will be used as a VAR compensator;

> Reduction of weight on the offshore platform, due to the lower oil volume of the main power transformer and reactors;

> Integrated switching design without switching transients; > Integrated design with regard to the compensation of the reactive power, in full

compliance with the grid operator’s requirements; > Maintenance of and interventions on the most maintenance critical components

are mainly shifted to the mainland (accessible 7/7 days and 24/24 hours).

Increased return on investment

The severity of a failure depends on the duration and magnitude of the available fault current passing through the arrester at the time of the failure. The ZPL2 type arrester, with its polymer housing, eliminates the potential danger of porcelain fragmentation. The ZPL2 design uses a fi berglass epoxy wrap to relieve the pressure that builds up during a failure. The arresters achieve a pressure relief capability of over 65 kA rms symmetrical.

Design of ZPL2 Arresters

The design consists of a number of Zinc Oxide elements contained within a fi berglass winding that is then inserted into the silicon rubber housing. Type ZPL2 arresters are shipped as single units for Duty Cycle Voltages from 3 kV to 72 kV.

Polymer Housing (Silicon Rubber)

The housing is manufactured by CGL and has been tested to provide long life even under contaminated conditions. Electrical and mechanical tests on the housing have included contamination tests, over-voltage tests, ultraviolet tests, thermal cycle and tracking wheel tests. The true test of a product or material always takes place in the fi eld.
