”Surprises” - God’s Gift to Us

Have you ever been going about your day, and in the midst of the “normal,” you bump into the extraordinary? I have learned to anticipate and look for the "surprises " in my day - gifts from God. I think it reveals a bit of who God is and not always what we expect. He is all merciful, all powerful, all loving, all consuming; He anticipates our needs before we do -- the colors in creation, the detail in our make up.... He is truly amazing. As we are nearing our ninth year, there have been many "surprises" that we have experienced along the way - things that we did not anticipate and have received as gifts from God:

The “Gift” of relationships that were unanticipated. We have developed relationships with so many people that we would not have otherwise known through our community connections, various clas-ses, support groups, Create It! Art Studio members, residents, customers in our businesses, and our many volunteers and staff The gift of these friendships is priceless.

A town that has been amazingly welcoming. When we ventured from Clearbrook into Gonvick, we

weren’t sure how it would be. We have been so welcomed and feel so loved and appreciated. THANK

YOU for another gift.

Being a part of watching something continue to change and grow. Being a part of an adventure with

God that is way bigger than one’s self is a “surprise” in itself. We at CWLC are honored to be partner-

ing with God AND with YOU to continue to focus on the mission of : “B u i l d i n g L i v e s , G r o w i n g

R e l a t i o n s h i p s, Imparting Hope”.

Watching the creation of color, flowers blooming, paintings immerging, artists at work, laughter, life

and activity- the joyous surprise of watching a creative God inspire people and nature itself!

Youth interacting with each other and building relationships with adults that are encouraging them to

be ALL that God wants them to be; parents sacrificially loving their children even through the difficultly

of separation or divorce. God—imparting hope, changing lives, healing relationships—amazing!

Time spent helping people make lifestyle changes—”SURPRISE”. It is YOU that changes to love with a

love beyond yourself!

Tired? God will energize you with the surprise of encouragement in unexpected ways. Sometimes it’s

a word of encouragement or someone covering for you or a hug from a child or from someone you

just met yesterday who is now your friend! SURPRISE!!

Live with your eyes wide open, and look for those surprises which God has put in your life. En-

joy the SURPRISES—gifts from God.

SPANISH CAMP-another big success!

Another successful Spanish Camp was held June 5th through 7th in the Youth Connection at Clear Waters Life Center-Clearbrook. Thirteen youth, 4th through 8th grade, participated throughout the three day camp. Nila Basset, our enthusiastic teacher, made learning the Spanish language fun and edu-cational. Miguel Prince, who was born in Mexico and knows Spanish well, assisted.

Participants were taught: the Spanish version of their names, colors, numbers, common food and clothing words, sentences, and more. An outdoor game was one of the fun ways Nila used to teach the language. Using teamwork, the youth had to run and grab different articles of clothing, using only Span-ish words, of course. They also learned skills by working in a café setting and enjoyed interacting with each other.

Spanish Camp helps students understand and appreciate a different culture. It may even inspire a child to visit a different country or become a missionary somewhere, someday. Fun was had by all. Look for the camp to be held again next year in 2013. Adios.

“El Café was very fun and the Spanish

Camp was a good learning experience.”

SCULPTURE GARDEN at CWLC Gonvick

Gonvick

Farmers’ Market

Saturdays 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon

Rain or shine! (In gym, if raining)

Clear Waters Life Center on Oak St. by Grow It!

June saw the Creative Walkways and Sculpture Wall begin to

take shape. With the help of a grant from Region 2 Arts Council,

CWLC was able to offer two, three-day, workshops that included

the construction of the walkway and concrete-sculpture fence. Jay

Jones and Al Belleveau conducted the sculpture portion of the

workshop, while Randy Helgeson orchestrated the concrete and

stone walkways portion with Leanne Walberg, Brian Hourscht, and

Paul Nelson.

Community members were invited to partake in the experience

and leave their own “footprints” by creating unique areas of the

walkway or sculpture fence. The creative juices were flowing as

participants were taught how to work with mosaic or stone and

concrete and cutting and welding techniques. Participants were

encouraged to make a mini sculpture or mosaic stepping stone to

take home.

Located in the northwest corner of our block, this beautiful addi-

tion to our Sculpture Garden provides a relaxing environment

amidst the flower gardens. Come and check out the beginning of a

new adventure and experience the surprises you will find in

each sidewalk portion or piece of sculpture on the wall!

This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota State Arts Board through the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

Clear Waters Life Center—Gonvick

USDA has awarded CWLC a grant of $35,000 towards phase 2 of our geothermal heating system. Phase

2 will provide heat for the west portion of the building including the gym, Create It! Community Art Stu-

dios, and Danielle’s Daycare. CWLC is trying to raise the additional $13,000 in matching funds to com-

plete the grant requirements. Last year, insulation and a new roof were

added to the gym which will enable the Phase 2 system to keep the area

comfortable during our cold months.

Having our new system in place before the winter heating season will

save us thousands of dollars in electric costs. The past two years, we have

only been able to heat the gym for specific events. With Danielle’s Day-

care now renting space in our facility and Create It! occupying the former

band room, girls locker room, and one kindergarten room, continuous heat is necessary. We are truly

grateful for the grant and the ability that it gives us to move forward with the heating system.

Any financial donations that we receive at this time will go towards the matching funds. Your gifts are

tax-deductible.

GROW IT! Greenhouse & Garden Center update

A big THANK YOU!! to everyone who is helping and has helped make

another successful growing season for Grow It!. Over a dozen youth have

taken part in planting, cleaning, landscaping, and helping with whatever

was asked of them. Local volunteers have helped lift the load and are

invaluable. It is such fun seeing so many coming from the surrounding

communities. We are building relationships, expanding our contacts, and

are able to tell our story to so many. We appreciate ALL of you!

Grow It! is back to its regular hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and Sat-

urday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon, and still have a large selection of perennials, trees, and shrubs available.

Stop in to see the continued growth, and enjoy the gardens, new path-

ways, and sculptures.

Remember Community Garden space is available; reserve yours, now,

for next year. Grow It! will be open through the end of July.

Create It! Community Art Studios

Plates have been broken, paint has been stroked, clay has been molded, and cement is drying as the first month of Create It! Community Art Studios’ debut draws to a close. Our three pro-fessional artists and trained mentors create and train art students, young and old, experienced and novice, in the studios on Mondays. Thirty different individuals have come through the door to experience the joy of creating art. If YOU have a desire to take classes and use a studio to grow as an artist, come and “Experience It” every Monday between 1:00 and 9:00 PM. Artists and mentors are available to work with you as you continue to grow in your journey of expressing yourself through various art mediums. Come for a visit, or check us out on our website at www.clearwaterslife.org. Use the “Gonvick” tab, click on “Create It! and enjoy the short video of the studios and artists!

Create It! Painting/Drawing Studio to Host Guest Artist

Monday, August 13, Barb Lidfors, a painter who uses oil on canvas, will be here for a one-day only teaching workshop, “Working Wonders with Color”. Barb divides her life between Minneapolis and her current home in Germany. Her workshop is aimed at familiarizing beginning painters with the fasci-

nating, but complex, world of color dynamics, color relationships, and color mixing techniques. Intermediate and advanced painters will be challenged to expand their theoretical knowledge of color into ever more complex and effective applications. The two, three-hour, sessions will focus on different teachings which will expand on one another.

Clear Waters Life Center—Clearbrook

Clear Waters Life Center has received from Country Faith Church title to The Gathering

Place which includes the small gym, kitchen, and stage at our Clearbrook site. Having had ac-

cess to the space and using it regularly for Youth Connection, CWLC was the natural choice to

ensure that the space would continue to be used for activities and events that strengthen rela-

tionships and build lives.

With the additional space comes increased maintenance costs, but opens doors for musi-

cal and drama productions, expansion of Shop-at-the-Top sorting and storage space, teaching

cooking classes, and space for indoor aerobic fitness activities, such as walking and running.

Community members are welcome to use the gym free of charge for walking and running dur-

ing CWLC business hours, except when Youth Connection or other events are scheduled.

The Gathering Place is available for rent. CWLC re-

serves the right to limit its use to individuals and groups

that support CWLC’s purpose statement.

We appreciate the gift we have been given and want

to be good stewards and see it being used. THANK YOU

Country Faith Church for believing in us and entrusting us

with the space!

All members are welcome to use the small gym, we have moved some jump ropes, aerobic steps, resistance tubes, kettle-bells, mats, etc. in there for your use. Don’t forget the basket-balls and a little one on one to get the heart rate up! The equipment is located up the stairs in the room next to the stage, the gym lights are also located there.

Please take care of these items as if they were your own. Re-turn equipment to its proper place when you are finished, and turn the lights off, If you are the last to leave.

Your help in maintaining the area, will ensure that we can offer it to you, ENJOY!
