OUR CHARITIESThe Royal Marsden Cancer CharityThe Royal Marsden is a world-leading cancer centre, providing the very best treatment and care for more than 40,000 cancer patients every year. It is also at the forefront of cancer research. The Royal Marsden’s work influences how all cancer patients are treated and cared for, not just in its own hospitals but all over the world.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity (No.1095197) supports this pioneering work. Thanks to our supporters, we are able to help The Royal Marsden con-tinue to push boundaries and raise standards of excellence.

When people donate to the charity they support everyone who benefits from the work of The Royal Marsden. Scientists searching for cures. Doctors who depend on the latest treatments and technologies. And, of course, cancer patients and their families. Together, we can keep making life better for people with cancer and keep striving towards a future without it.

St Catherine’s HospiceSt Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers.

For over 25 years they have been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey.

Hospice care is based on the belief that each person is more than their illness, and that each of us has unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. St Catherine’s responds to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life.

This highly personal, holistic approach to care takes time, skill and experience from a multi-professional team. They care for people in the hospice, in their homes and in nursing homes. St Catherine’s Hospice (No.1095197) critically rely on voluntary donations and legacies.

OUR SHOWWe all know of Cancer, it happens to other people. The Surrey Spring Show was established by a group of friends who have all been touched by this disease. The idea for a charity show began when dear friends Sam Holland & Sue Alkin were both diagnosed. The Show is run to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Hospital (where Sam continues to receive her excellent treatment); and St.Catherine’s Hospice (Crawley) that cared so wonderfully for Sue. As a result of all of our kind and generous sponsors, helpers and competitors we raised a staggering amount last year; along with the proceeds from our raffle we gave a total of £20,000 to our two charities. This show means so much to so many people and we hope that with your help and continued support we can exceed our previous year’s total. We hope you enjoy our show and that you enter as many classes as you can as every penny spent goes to our charities. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on June 7th.

Sam HollandIn 2008 when Sam Holland was told that the back ache she had been suffering with for several months was a Para-vertebral plasmacytoma/multiple myeloma, Cancer came home. Life changed dramatically, running a busy yard now had to fit in with visits to the Royal Marsden (Sutton) for blood tests, biopsy’s and MRI scans. Three months of home Chemo, followed by a stay in hospital for a Melphalan autograft soon played havoc with Sam’s hair. So out with the horse clippers, solved that problem. Nothing stopped Sam continuing to compete her horses, she says they helped to keep her sane. Support from family & friends helped. One of those friends was Sue Alkin who unbeknown to everyone was developing a cancer of her own which sadly she lost the fight with in August 2010. Although there is no cure for Sam’s type of Cancer with the Marsden’s continued help it is under control and life is back on an even keel. The care and work that The Royal Marsden does continues to help thousands of lives every year.

Sue AlkinSue was involved with horses all her life, a passion she passed onto her children. Sue rode, competed and showed her beloved Arabs both here and in America. Sue will be remembered for her unceasing enthusiasm and her desire to get the job done. Procrastination did not exist in Sue’s world. She was the perfect ‘Pony Club Mum’, helping with everything and never complaining. In more recent years she has assisted at Horse Shows both here and in America. She bore her Cancer stoically and right until the end she was committed to establishing the Surrey Spring Show.
