Woods celebrate 60th anniversary
Tycho and Pansy Wood celebratedtheir 60th wedding anniversary on June20 in the fellowship hall of HaymoreMemorial Baptist Church. They weremarried on June 18, 1950, in a homewedding.
The anniversary celebration fol-lowed the Sunday morning worshipservice with about 175 present for theoccasion.
Hosting the event were children ofthe honored couple, Tycho and MarieWood, Johnny and Bobbie Wood andDebbie and Jeff Inscore, and the grand-children.
The luncheon was catered by Timand April Norman.

Four cousins with ties to Mount Airy graduated inMay and June from their respective colleges and highschool. Aaron Todd Greenwood, Sara “Faine”Greenwood, Chad Powell Smith and Nicklaus Ashburnare great-grandchildren of the late Joseph Gordon andMartha King Greenwood of Mount Airy.
Aaron Greenwood graduated from Georgia Instituteof Technology in three years with a B.S. degree in Civilengineering with a certificate in Japanese language. Hewill complete his master’s in civil engineering in 2011.A Stamps Leadership scholar, Aaron was an advisor tothe Freshman Council and a student ambassador. Hestudied abroad at Georgia Tech’s campus in Metz,France. This fall he will chair the Presidents’ CouncilGoverning Board.
Aaron is the son of Todd and Penny Greenwood ofWinston-Salem and the grandson of Jack and JoyceGreenwood of Mount Airy.
Sara Greenwood graduated cum laude with depart-mental honors from Tulane University, New Orleans,
with a B.A. degree in English. She was the recipient ofthe Presidential Scholarship. In 2007 she spent thesummer studying Mandarin Chinese in Beijing, China,and in 2008 worked as an intern for Rave MusicMagazine in Bangalore, India. In 2009 she was award-ed a travel grant to study in Bolsena, Italy. She will beworking at the Cambodia Daily English Languagenewspaper located in Phnom Phen starting in October.
She is the daughter of Craig and Nancy Greenwoodof Sacramento, Calif., and the granddaughter of SarahHill Greenwood and the late Wayne Greenwood ofMount Airy.
Chad Powell Smith graduated from the Universityof North Carolina at Charlotte — William States LeeCollege of Engineering with a B.S. degree in civil engi-neering. He is a member of the American Society ofCivil Engineers and is a registered EIT (Engineer InTraining). He is pursuing a degree for LEEDAccreditation (leadership in energy and environmentaldesign). A graduate of Ragsdale High School, he was amember of the National Honor Society.
Chad is the son of Chuck and Kathy Powell Smithof Jamestown and the grandson of Eleanor GreenwoodPowell and the late Joe “Pete” Powell of Mount Airy.
Their younger cousin, Nicklaus Powell Ashburn ofAdvance, graduated from Davie County High School inJune where he was on the National Honor Society andserved as state vice president of the Future BusinessLeaders of America. He will enter Wake ForestUniversity in August to major in biology and health andexercise science while studying in pre-med. He plans toattend the Wake Forest University School of Medicine.He is the recipient of scholarships awarded by AllenTate Realtors, Sam Walton Community Scholarshipfrom Wal-Mart, Woodmen of the World, KentFoundation Scholarship through Wachovia, MocksvilleWoman’s Club, Crosby Scholarship and HillsdaleSunrise Rotary Club.
His parents are Marty Ashburn and Kay PowellAshburn of Advance and he is the grandson of EleanorGreenwood Powell and the late Joe “Pete” Powell ofMount Airy.

Steven plans to major inconstruction at Surry CommunityCollege. Kaley, who graduated in Junefrom Mount Airy High School, has beeninvolved in Health OccupationsStudents Of America and ChoralArts. She plans to obtain an Associatesof Arts degree from Surry CommunityCollege. Her career goal is to becomean elementary educator.

Family trip to Disney World Austin and Michelle Wardhonored at baby shower
Steve and Opie McKeaver of Dobson celebrated their 40th wedding anniversaryin June with a fun-filled family trip to Disney World, Sea World and other sightsin Florida. The family, son Chris and daughter-in-law Pam, center, and grand-daughters, Sydney and Carrie, are shown at the Tree of Life in the AnimalKingdom Park. Steve and Opie were married June 13, 1970, at Salem ForkBaptist Church by the Rev. Gilmer Denny.
A baby shower was held for Clint Austin and Michelle Ward at the home of thegrandfather-to-be, Kenneth Austin Ward. They are expecting a baby girl at theend of July. Hosting the party were members of the family.
