The Mount Airy Appearance Commissionhas recognized the Tumbling RockReservoir at Westwood Park with itsEnvironmental Excellence Award.Glenda Laster, left, a member of thecommission, makes the presentation toJeff Boyles, Public Services director;Catrina Alexander, Parks andRecreation director; and Brad Nichols,city employee. Boyles said the reservoirwas built in the 1920s as a water supplyfor the town, but it was not used longand eventually abandoned. In 1998,local officials decided the dam neededto be rebuilt along with the constructionof a maintenance road to the pond andthe walking/biking trail. The park andreservoir are located at 1250 GalaxTrail, Mount Airy.

Children and their parents bait and cast hooks as they stand on the pier at Tumbling Rock Reservoir, the first public water fishing area located at Westwood Park.


Mallory Ireland and Chris Wentzellwere showered with many lovely

and useful gifts during a wedding showerheld in their honor on Aug. 8.

The celebration was held in the fellowshiphall of Grace Moravian Church. Hostesseswere Lisa Davis and Sandi Nowlin, friends ofthe bride’s mother, Ginger Fishel; and MindyIreland, sister of the bride-elect.

Special guests were Ginger and ChuckFishel, parents of the bride-elect; hermaternal grandfather, Earl Wilmoth; andthe prospective bridegroom’s parents,Donna and Joe Wentzell.

Mallory and Chris will be married onOct. 2 at 2 p.m. in Christ Moravian Church,Winston-Salem.

Family members and friends enjoyed anafternoon of fellowship as the affiancedcouple opened gifts. Refreshments consist-ed of wedding bell and wedding dress-shaped chicken salad and pimento cheesetea sandwiches made by the mother of thebride. Homemade bell and heart-shapedmints, lobster dip and crackers, pina coladaand fruit dip were made by Brenda Martin.Party fare also included pink lemonadecupcakes, made by the bride’s mother, cakesquares, pink lemonade, nuts and pickles.

Tables were decorated with various cakestands decorated with flower arrangements.An heirloom ecru lace tablecloth, passeddown from the honoree’s grandmother,adorned the display table holding photographsof the engaged couple from birth to present.

Yesterday Lane, a local band, entertained the Surry County School Educators of theYear at their annual breakfast at Cross Creek Country Club on Aug. 19.

The band includes three young men from North Surry High School: Devin Freeman,Jonathan Brown and Jesse Morton, as well as Casey Marshall, a graduate from PatrickCounty Schools.

The band welcomed teachers, principals, board of education members and centraloffice staff with instrumentals as they entered the room for an enjoyable breakfast.

After breakfast, the group performed three songs: “Sweet Home Carolina,” “RockMe Mama Like a Wagon Wheel” and “Stand by Me.” Educators had a wonderful morn-ing celebrating and enjoying the music by local students.

Yesterday Lane plays a variety of rock and country covers and originals. You canfind them on YouTube, MySpace and Facebook.
