SURVEY 1991 : LIBRARY SCHOOLS IN CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR CAREERS IN FINE ARTS & VISUAL RESOURCES LIBRARIANSHIP

In December 1991, the ARLIS/NA Professional Development Committee (PDC) updated the information in this survey, and over the past six months additional revisions and corrections

have been contributed by library schools in the United States and Canada. The matrix accompanying this report summarizes

the information provided by each school on course offerings,

internships, and subject study relevant to preparation for work in

the fields of art librarianship and visual resources curatorship. A

"yes" indicates: under the heading "Fine Arts," "Humanities,"

"Special Libraries," and "Visual Resources," that the school offers

such a specialized course; under "Double Degree," that a gradu ate degree in art history is also available at that institution; for "Practica" that the library school does provide students the op

portunity to work in a library or visual resources collection for

academic credit; and for "subject course credit" that nonlibrary school courses (e.g., art history graduate seminars, etc.) may be

taken for credit applied toward the M.L.S. degree. The full 12-page survey report has detailed information on

each school, including descriptions of practica/internship pro grams, names of faculty members who teach specific courses and

the frequency offered, and several indexes including a listing of schools offering fine arts librarianship courses, and a listing of schools offering dual degree programs. A copy of the survey

report is available upon request from: Jack Robertson, Fine Arts

Librarian, Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library, Bayly Drive, Univer

sity of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22903; (804) 924-6601. One additional point of information, which is not included in

the survey or the summary matrix, is the fact that detailed course

information, including reading lists, course outlines, bibliogra

phies, etc., is available upon request for the eight specialized fine arts librarianship courses being offered at schools in North Amer

ica. Five of the eight courses are taught by ARLIS/NA members, and these individuals, listed below, will share teaching materials with interested individuals. In the case of the other three spe

cialized courses, some material is available from the administra

tive offices of the library schools; these three addresses are also

given below.
