28. Primary reasons food not getting used? <Insert Aggregate Results>

I use it all usually. Forgot, become bad too soon than expected. Overpurchasing Forget it's in the fridge or it spoils before I find time to cook it. Forget that it's there. Only needed a little bit for a specific recipe. Life got in the way of the meal that was planned Unused leftovers get forgotten to take for lunch, I don't always use all the produce in my weekly farm box before it goes bad. poor planning. unexpected schedule changes. 1) Forgetting it is in the fridge and all of a sudden finding it but it is bad. 2) taking too long to make what I had planned for the item. 3) Generally not caring for the taste of that particular item/s so it sits in there until it goes bad. This typically does not happen very often as I live with a human rubbish can (aka my husband). not enough for the whole family...so we forget it... Mistakes made during recipes that resulted in food not tasting very good. left overs sometimes get pushed to the back and not seen. typically, I freeze left overs for a night when I don't feel like cooking. Foods cooked in bulk didn't get portioned out and frozen. Too much eating out or cooking multiple days in a row without time to eat leftovers, also making too much for one person and not freezing it too busy to cook Forget to make the recipe for which it was purchased It has passed its optimum condition for eating With only two people in the household, sometimes we can't use up some things before they go bad Too much of it for just one person. fresh vegetables not being used on time Didn't have time to cook Forgot I had it Goes bad before we can eat it it goes bad before I have a chance to use it food is spoiled forgot forgot forgot put away in a corner and forgotten, over-estimation of quantity Forgot about it. I didn't feel like eating it and then it went bad. Or I bought too much of it and couldn't finish it before it went bad. Spoiled. .............. With only one person in household that likes vegetables, they can go bad before all of them can be eaten. Sometimes get busy with work/school and forget to cook something before it goes bad (like hamburger meat). plans change and I don't have time to cook or do meal prep fresh food/produce goes bad Hidden, or because i am away Can't eat what I've bought fast enough or I forget that it is there. Too much for one person, forget about it Occasionally some leftovers will get forgotten about in the fridge, but we are aware of our foodwaste, and what waste we do have isn't wasted, it's composted. Over-buying when I shop. Assuming more meals at home than I prepare. too old, expired No time to cook I buy things but don't get time to prepare them; I like to eat salad but apparently don't like to prepare it (lettuce gone bad); or we don't eat all the leftovers it goes bad (spoils) Cooking for one is hard! I don't know because my mother manages a fridge. forget i bought them. Produce will go bad sometimes. Either I forgot about it, or just didn't get around to using it. Gets pushed to the back of the fridge and gets missed. Food is expired. Spoils unexpectedly (too fast) or haven't been home to use it. forget what is in there. no time to cook before it expires. Forgot I had it, or never got around to using it. husband doesn't eat leftovers lose track of "use by" dates poor planningFruit and veggies spoiling (I overestimate how quickly we can eat it) Didn't fit with a meal we wanted to make Over purchase did not use. Forgetting it's in the fridge. If I ended up not making a particular recipe (usually because I was lazy/didn't have as much time as I thought I would), some ingredients end up going to waste. Secondarily, sometimes I have to buy a larger quantity of a single ingredient than I actually need for a recipe (especially, say, heavy cream), and then the remainder of it expires before I need it again. It was too big of a portion and I live alone. I forget what is there.Spoils, expires, don't want it anymore. It's my roommates. I forget about it if it's in the cupboards, or if it's in the fridge, the produce goes bad before I get to it. Extra ingredients left over, not enough to make unique dish. Loss of interest or forgotten Not consumed fast enough. gets soggy or moldy or qty cooked originally was too much Expired & rotten Usually it's salad that expires, or mixed nuts that get old. Salad doesn't keep very well. Forgetfulness Plans Change and I go out for dinner supply greater than need I forget that I have it in my fridge or I just don't eat it fast enough because I bought more than I needed. Change in plans, bought too much didn't have time to cook it; forgot about it Put in wrong place Mostly I am ambitious when buying perishables, thinking I'll feel like cooking complicated dinners, but then don't use it all. Also, sometimes I buy something for one meal, like a head of lettuce, and then don't use it all up. leftovers that never got their chance in the big game. Bought too much Forgot about it, sounds crazy but it's true. Over purchase (only need cabbage for taco night, but have to buy a whole head, etc.) Work too much- not home to eat the food Expires before I get to it. Spoils before we get a chance to eat it. We often buy in bulk knowing that we may throw part of it out. We still save money because often the part we consumed would have cost more than the bulk amount we paid for the whole package. Optimistic about how much food I use over time; being a slave to cravings. It's spoiled. That's why. Wrong purchase. Required preparation and/or wasn't part of a meal plan. Only if I completely forget about it and it goes bad, but that rarely ever happens. I hate wasting food so I always make sure to eat it before it goes bad.Goes bad before I can find a use for it Forgot. Like variety but still buy in bulk because often still cheaper even if their or

30. What are your biggest challenges (with either shopping for food, cooking food, or managing food)? <Insert Aggregate Results>

Planning meals. cost and flavor Getting proper proportions. Takes a lot of time. Meeting everyone's needs Buying for two - most things are packaged for four people or more, it can make waste minimisation difficult Not used to cooking for two really, so making meal sizes appropriate is something I am still learning Cooking for one or two people is challenging. pre-planning meals and being more consistent in how we shop. price of food products availability of products health time it takes to shop Can't think any Cooking for one most of the time. Making time to cook. And/or eating all the leftovers - I get sick of the same dish after a while. Buying fresh Chinese vegetables requires a separate trip to specialty ethnic food store. I throw out 1/2 of avocados I buy, because they spoil before I have a chance to use them. What to buy? Getting to the grocery store. The nearest one is 1.5 miles away, and we don't have a car. We use the bus system, but there isn't a direct route. staying in budget Time for shopping and preparation. I don't have much money to spend, getting my family to eat healthy food instead of junk food. Lines, crowds and rude people. Cost. Home cooking is far more expensive than hitting the McD drivethru Making sure I use all of the produce in the fridge Time. I work long hours, my SO works longer hours, we have long commutes, and I don't have the time to do everything that's needed at home. picky eaters are no fun to cook for being tiredHonestly, not knowing how to cook well. shopping: too many things I want to buy! Prioritizing. cooking: motivation to cook, takes too much time managing: finish everything before it goes bad. Time to do it Finding new recipes that use what I already have (spices). I hate have to buy a whole container of something I will only need a teaspoon of. I normally have fun cooking, but my busy schedule makes it hard to find time to cook since I always feel rushed. It feels more like a chore now than a relaxing activity. Working part time I get home after dinner those days; get to busy to prep and cook; am less motivated to cook if I think my kids won't eat it (making me need to prep/cook two meals instead of just one) Coming up with new things to cook and try. The higher quality ingredients are expensive but they are what I want to feed us so I'm trying to find simple recipes that they like, that are affordable. judging how much fresh foods like salad makings or fruits are bought Keeping him out of things that are scheduled to be used. Not eating everything I buy before it goes bad Time management I live alone, and nothing is packaged with that in mind so there's always repackaging to do. hard to get all complicated ingredients It takes a long time to go shopping, cook, and then clean up. Knowing what to make that will satisfy everybody in our household and will not take all day to make. don't know what to cook, so, don't know what to buy managing food: I control the amount of food and I maintain to eat low caloric diet. Time and energy Not having enough space or tools to prepare food. I work and also am taking a class, so my time is pretty tight. Shopping isn't something I really enjoy doing; I often wish I could just have the ingredients magically appear when I want to make something. I'm not very good with remembering what food is in the fridge, especially if it's tucked away in a drawer (out of sight out of mind). Time is the issue Wish I had more time, and gathering the ingredients for cooking tasty meals is a pain, so I try to cook simple things or eat prepared foods. calories (I keep under 1800/day) time, unknown quantities of food Buying perishables in appropriate quantities, ie don't need an entire loaf of bread. Time for prep and cleaning up afterwards Not eating too much Picky child eaters finding something that children will like. planning meals and sticking to the plan vs being spontaneous, time to do the prep work (i.e. chopping fresh veggies) clean up after Lack of motivation to spend time cooking. Having the energy to figure out what to cook and cook it after I come home from work. It's hard to plan ahead accurately. I also feel a lot of guilt over the stuff that goes to waste. figuring out how much to get; figuring out how much we can actually eat I have no money. I can't cook. I am lazy. Finding the time Going to the grocery store is kinda a pain; I have to have a grocery list to remember what I need Don't have enough time to shop and cook. Variety. Healthy variety. Cannot buy produce with exact amount I want/need more vegetarian options Finding the right ingredients. Finding the time to cook big meals I love to eat good wholesome food and so portion size is an issue for

me managing food time at home to cook. finding the time planning and managing food, stores nearby don't have all ingredients Limited time. Balancing taste and health and convenience stay in the budget when shopping, be able to provide varied meal Presentation. cleaning up the mess after cooking Finding a variety of vegetables, fulfilling dietary needs while restricting the use of some food groups (such as legumes and grains), and making food that is pleasing to both myself and my partner. it's difficult to cook for one person. Time is the biggest one. The price of food always going up. There are times when I just don't know what to fix for dinner. Like burned out on meals. Without a car, I have to plan my shopping and hope I don't forget any crucial ingredients. time, long hours at school, not inspired to cook so eat food from packages Figuring out easy to make simple meals - that are healthy and that we can both eat (with our different allergies makes it challenging). Time (That is my answer but said I must put at least 10 characters.) Wanting to cook a special meal and missing that one esoteric ingredient varietyyyy its pretty boring Coming up with a plan. I'm not organized enough. Finding good fish is challenging in Seattle. Time and difficulty

31. What could make shopping, cooking, managing food more easier for your lifestyle? <Insert Aggregate Results>

Premaking meals If I didn't have as much other stuff to do so I had more time. It's pretty convenient as is. Being boring... The same meals every three week cycle or something like that with menus that build on each other for minimal leftovers I'd love to be able to save time while eating healthier meals (they usually take longer to plan out, prepare, and cook) Frozen veggies in serving size bags, in bulk. A schedule with planned meals. dishwasher Having plastic grocery bags at the store. Meal planning options better planning and encouragement a better way of having a grocery list would be great. I'd like to have something that I could check off, but not delete- that way it would be on the list for the next time I go shopping. Quicker in out at grocery store Shopping - Helpful to know what's in season and know what might pair well with what I already have on stock. Cooking - easy prepping and clean up options. Non picky child eaters, easier one stop shop for recipes a dme planning and grocery list creation A better kitchen. A garden out back. More herbs in the back. Premade allergy alternatives for pasta sauce without garlic, etc. so that I didn't have to make sauces from scratch. hiring a personal chef Having someone else do it. preparing meals ahead of time, better planning A way to plug easily into computer for a weekly meal plan that can be easily modified. I like gas stove, rather than electronic one. Having a maid/cook a smart fridge having groceries delivered, having a farmers market within walking distance Buy as much as I want when I want so we don't have to store extras or only use an ingredient one time. Some sort of auto tracker, or an external display on fridge door that shows what's in the fridge in each compartment or something. Shopping would be easier if I could have the items delivered to me. Buying food for just two people is difficult. Most things are packaged for a family and if they are packaged for single or two they are more expensive. A wife. :) not having a toddler under my feet all the time Food delivery.
