Rugs, pillows, poufs and other accessories not only add

color and visual interest to furniture store vignettes, but alsopresent a great opportunity for add-on sales using minimalextra oor space. Including accessories in the retail mix enables

sales associates to present a complete room package to endconsumers and help them to build a look that suits their specic

style needs. Those same customers are more likely to comeback to the store in the future to purchase additional accessories.

Furniture stores with accessory programs typically bring in

more revenue and experience higher customer satisfaction andloyalty than retai lers that focus only on selling furniture.

OUTDOOR RUG PADSRug pads provide a durable, long-lasting foundation that willextend the life of an outdoor rug. Designed to withstand the

elements, outdoor rug pads minimize rug movement, bunchingand slippage while sl ightly elevating the rug to promote faster

drying. They also provide cushioning when a rug is placed onabrasive surfaces such as stone, concrete, tile and wood and help

to protect decks and patios from stains and discolorations.

SPECIAL FEATURES:• Polymer-coated polyester • Mold- and mildew-resistant

• UV protection for maximum colorfastness • Ventilated grid to promote faster drying of rug

CARE AND MAINTENANCEOF OUTDOOR PRODUCTS

RUGS Area rugs are one of the easiest ways to freshen the look, colorand style of an outdoor living space. Designed to dry quickly,

resist fading, and clean easily, outdoor rugs generally require littlemaintenance. However, general care is advised to keep these

rugs looking their best. Following are tips for extending the l ifeof an outdoor rug.

• Regularly shake out the rug to remove dust and dirt that mayhave accumulated. Brooms and manual sweepers are also

an effective way to clean outdoor rugs.

• Clean the rug monthly. Mix a solution of dish soap andlukewarm water in a bucket. Gently scrub the rug using

a large nylon brush, making sure to clean both sidesof the rug. Rinse the rug with a hose—preferably on asloped surface such as a driveway to enable the water to

easily drain away.

• Dry the rug in sunl ight to prevent mold. Hang the rug

over a porch railing in the sunlight or lay the rug outin the sun, making sure to ip it over to ensure that both

sides dry thoroughly.• Should a spill occur, blot it with a dry cotton cloth as quickly

as possible to prevent a stain from setting in. Make sure to wipe underneath the rug as well . If necessary, use a mixture

of dish soap and lukewarm water to remove the remainderof the spill and then allow the area to dry.

• As with outdoor furniture, outdoor rugs should be protectedduring seasons when the outdoor space isn’t being used.Rugs that aren’t located in a covered space should be rolled

up and stored in a garage or other covered area until thefollowing season.

TIP: While outdoor rugs are designed to be mold- and mildew-resistant and withstand

direct sunlight, they will have a longer lifespan if kept away from direct sun exposure

or standing water.

PILLOWS AND POUFSProper care of outdoor pillows and poufs can lengthen product

lifespan. This can be accomplished by simply brushing offdirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics, wiping up spills

as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur.Like outdoor furniture, outdoor pillows and poufs should becovered or stored in a covered area during off seasons or in cases

of extended rainfall or inclement weather.

Following are tips for extending the life of outdoor pillows

and poufs.

• Spot clean with dish soap and lukewarm water using a spongeif there are any spots or stains. Rinse with clean water.

• Always dry the pillow or pouf completely before using orstoring to prevent mildew formation. Dry in the sun, if possible, making sure to ip the pillow/pouf over to ensure that both

sides dry thoroughly.

LAMPS AND OTHER ACCESSORIESOutdoor lamps, mirrors and decorative accents are designed

to hold up to the elements. However, like all other outdooraccessories, they should be placed in a covered area when not

in use for extended periods of time or during prolongedrainfall or inclement weather.

LAMP OPTIONSSurya currently offers more than 300 lamps in a variety of styles, colors and price points. All products are UL approved. Available

lamp types include: table, accent, buffet, oor, bridge/swing armlamps and desk/task lamps.

BUFFET LAMPS: Placed on buffet tables or consoles; usually havea narrow base silhouette, often looking like a thin column or

candlestick, with a smallish shade; typically range in height from

32" to 36".

TABLE LAMPS: Lamps designed to sit on a side table; typicallyrange in height from 24" to 36". This is the most popular

lamp style.

ACCENT LAMPS: Smaller than table lamps and typically more

decorative; are most often 22" in height or less.

FLOOR LAMPS: Sit on the oor of a living space; two types—  3-way and 6-way, which dictates the number of lighting levels;

typically range in height from 5' to 6'.

BRIDGE/SWING ARM LAMPS: A type of lamp where the lamp

arm pivots for exibility; the “bridge” portion hangsover a space to offer direct light; typically oor lamps but

may also be table lamps.

DESK/TASK LAMPS: Functional lamps designed to aid in

performing specic tasks, such as reading, preparing food, doing homework, working on hobbies, etc.; typically range

in height from 25" to 39".

PLACEMENT SUGGESTIONS BY LAMP TYPE

BUFFET LAMPS

LIVING ROOM: Place a set of buffet lamps at both endsof a console table.

BEDROOM: Use a single buffet lamp on a short dresser.

DINING ROOM: Place a set of buffet lamps at both ends

of a buffet, sideboard or credenza.

TABLE LAMPSLIVING ROOM: Place a table lamp on side tables next to the sofaor chairs, or on a sofa table. The lamps don’t have to match

but should be simi lar in size and scale.

BEDROOM: Place a table lamp on nightstands on each side of

the bed. A table lamp that is 26" to 28" tall (base and shadetogether) usually works well for bedroom use.

ENTRYWAY: Set an eye-catching table lamp on a table in the foyerto make a dramatic statement when guests enter.

It’s important to consider a table's height when selecting a lamp.

Shorter lamps generally look better on higher tables, and tallerones on lower tables. As a general rule, a lamp should be no morethan 1½ times the height of the table that it sits on, and the shade

shouldn’t extend beyond the width of the table.

ACCENT LAMPSLIVING ROOM: Place an accent lamp on a replace mantle or pianoto provide some extra illumination.

BEDROOM: Set an accent lamp on a nightstand or high dresserfor subtle lighting.

DINING ROOM: Place an accent lamp on a buffet or sideboard to

augment existing room lighting.

KITCHEN: Situate an accent lamp on a counter or bar to provide an

attractive light source when overhead lighting isn’t being used.

HALLWAY/ENTRYWAY: Place an accent lamp on a hall table or foyer

table to add a bit of ambiance and a welcoming feel.

10 SURYA TRAINING MANUAL | SPRING 2015

BRIDGE/SWING ARM LAMPSLIVING ROOM: Place a bridge lamp next to a chair to provideneeded light for reading or other tasks.

BEDROOM: Use a swing arm lamp beside a chair or besidethe bed in place of a reading lamp.

HOME OFFICE: Place a swing arm lamp beside a desk or chairin the ofce.

DESK/TASK LAMPSHOME OFFICE: Place a desk lamp on the corner of a deskto illuminate the workspace.

BEDROOM: If the bed is frequently used for reading, place

a desk/task lamp on one or both nightstands (insteadof using table lamps).

bed. Alternately, place a oor lamp next to a skirted table

displaying pictures and other items.

SHADES AND LIGHT INTENSITY The shades on Surya’s lamps come in a range of colors—  from light, natural hues to vibrant colors to darker hues.

Following are a few things to keep in mind regardinglamp shade color and light intensity:

• Light colored shades allow the maximum amount of light tolter through into the surrounding environment, making

this type of shade ideal for brightening a room or performingtasks such as reading.

• A darker or opaque shade illuminates from ceiling to oorrather than outward, making this type of shade a good choice

when looking to create mood or ambiance within a space.

 ANATOMY OF A LAMP

LAMP COMPONENTS

FINIAL: A small nishing ornament that is attached to the topof the harp; can be simple or ornate.

HARP: The wire support that attaches at the socket and supportsthe shade at the top of the lamp.

BULB: Attaches to socket and provides illumination; Surya’s

lamps accept either a 75W, 100W or 150W bulb.

UL LABEL: Certies that an electrical product has been tested

and complies with UL safety standards.

SOCKET: A threaded screw base used to hold and connect a light

bulb to a power source; most Surya lamps have one light socket, while a few designs include two l ight sockets.

SWITCH: Controls the lamp and turns it on and off; the switches

on Surya’s lamps include three-way turn knobs, on/off lineswitches and twin pull chains.

SADDLE: A metal base to which the harp attaches.

NECK: The portion of the lamp that connects the harp, saddle

and socket to the base of the lamp.

CORD: Used to connect the lamp to the electrical power source;the cords on Surya’s lamps range from 8' in length (table, accent,

buffet and task lamps) to 12' in length (oor lamps).

UNDERSTANDING THE CUSTOMER’S NEEDSFollowing are three questions that you should always askthe customer:

• For what purpose will the lighting be used?• Is there a preference for a particular style/color/nish? • What is the budget for the lighting purchase?

Not only will these questions engage the customer, but they will

also help to ensure that you guide the customer towards lightingoptions that best meet their specic needs.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS WHENPURCHASING LAMPSDECOR STYLE: Is the decor style modern, transitional or

traditional? The lamp selected should complementexisting decor.

PROMINENCE: Will the lamp be the focal point of the room?

If so, a good choice would be a lamp in a bold color or distinctivestyle that will stand out among other decor items. If a more

subtle look is desired, a lamp with neutral tones and understateddesign would be optimal.

SCALE: Are the room’s furnishings substantial in size or arethey smaller in scale? A lamp with a large ceramic baseand modern drum shade would balance a large love seat or

sectional sofa while a lamp with a slender base and shade would work well on a del icate accent table.

LIGHT REQUIRED: How much light is needed and where shouldit be focused? Dark lamp shades don't typically allow much light

to lter through while lighter shades provide more diffusion. A shade with a wider base will provide more l ight than a shade

 with a narrower base.

METAL• Will not fade, chip, peel, ake or rust • Resistant to corrosion and abrasion • Increases depth and color of images • Captures light in a way that enhances the experience of the art • Hand-crafted frames made in the USA

WOOD • Printed directly on quarter-inch framed or thick half-inch

unframed birchwood

• Provides a visible, natural looking grain • Printed with archival, UV-curable inks • Fine Art on birchwood recreates the look of an original  • Hand-crafted frames made in the USA

MATERIALS ARCHIVAL INK: Archival ink is designed to resist fading caused

by exposure to light. Whereas dye-based inks absorb intothe substrate, archival ink is pigment-based and sits on top of

the substrate, making the ink more stable. As a result, theink is much less likely to fade or show color shifts, providing

signicantly increased longevity.

UV-CURABLE INK: UV-curable ink cures (dries) almost

immediately and is very durable for both indoor and outdoorapplications. This type of ink can print onto a large variety

of substrates, including wood, glass and acrylic panels.

PAPER: Acid-free paper has been treated to neutralize

acid and has a PH level above 7 (neutral). Typically usedfor museum applications, this type of paper holds ink

and colors well and resists yellowing and disintegration, helping to extend art work life.

CANVAS: Museum-grade canvas is a very durable canvas similar

to that found in museum applications. This type of canvas ismost often made of linen or cotton and features a tight weave, making it ideal for photographic and ne art reproductions.

ACRYLIC: Digital Acrylic Panels (Optix® DA) panels promotestrong ink-to-surface adhesion to provide excellent optical

clarity and vivid colors. Featuring a high gloss nish, acrylicpanels are highly durable and offer a contemporary look

and feel.

METAL: Aluminum is resistant to corrosion and abrasion and

wil l not fade, chip, peel, ake or rust. A brushed satinnish provides deep, vibrant colors with exceptional detail

and resolution. Because the image is infused into the surfacerather than sitting on top of it, the art work takes on a luminescent quality.

WOOD: Birchwood provides a natural nish and pleasing warm

tones for a more. The wood grain is visible in the backgroundof the art work, adding subtle texture and visual interest along

with a vintage look and feel .

FRAMING STYLESGALLERY WRAPPED CANVAS: Gallery wrapping is used to describea style of framing where the canvas print is stretched so that

the sides of the image are wrapped around the frame, giving thepicture a 3-D feel.

TRADITIONAL FRAME: Traditional frames provide a border thatthe art work is set into, resulting in slight overlap of the

frame’s edges over the art work. Traditional frames are available

in a variety of materials, including wood, metal and acrylic.

FRAME WITH MAT: In th is framing style, a frame is accompaniedby a mat—a heavy cardboard-like material that sits within

the frame to give the artwork a nished look and additional visual appeal.

FLOATER FRAME: With oater frames, the art work is mounted with a space between the frame and the canvas wrap so that

the print appears to be oating in the frame.

MOUNTED: Mounting is the technique used to secure art workto a mount or display board, creating a frameless designand a clean, modern look.

FRAME COMPONENTS ACID-FREE MATBOARD: Acid-free matboard has been treatedto neutralize acid compounds and has a PH level above 7(neutral). This type of matboard is typically used in conjunction

with acid-free or archival paper to help preserve art work.

CANVAS STRETCHER BARS: Stretcher bars are pre-cut woodenpieces that interlock to form the framework that a canvasis pulled across (stretched onto). Stretcher bars help to create

an even, warp-free canvas surface.

Rug pads provide a durable, long-lasting foundation. Not onlydo they add comfort and cushion to a rug, but they also protect

oors underneath and help to prevent accidents by holding therug in place. The proper rug pad can:

• Extend the life of the rug by reducing wear and tear betweenthe rug and oor, and enhancing air circulation.

• Minimize rug movement, bunching and sl ippage.

• Add extra comfort underfoot by providing additional

cushioning and support. • Protect all oor types, including both hard surfaces and carpets

Surya now offers seven rug pad types, including an outdoor rugpad. A rug pad can be rolled with a Surya rug prior to shipping

for convenience (additional fee applies).

26 SURYA TRAINING MANUAL | SPRING 2015

HAND-KNOTTEDMSRP*: $500 to $4,200

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 5 to 9 months

Hand-knotting is the most intricate, labor-intensive rug weavingprocess in use today. A higher number of knots per square

inch typically translates to better quality. A complex patterncan require very dense knotting and takes a long time to

produce. An average weaver can tie about 3,000 knots per day.

DURABILITY: Longest lasting construction. Good ones can last10 to 25 years. Great ones can last 100+ years.

SHEDDING: Sheds less than a typical hand-tufted rug.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Individual knots are visible on the back

of hand-knotted rugs, making it possible to see the overallpattern and colors used on the rug’s surface. Weaving and

knots will be sl ightly uneven. The fringe of a hand-knottedrug is an extension of the rug’s foundation.

*MSRP is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

**Manufacturing time on all rug construction types includes: spinning and dyeing wool, weaving, nishing and transportation.

HAND-TUFTEDMSRP*: Premium $500 to $1,200; Standard $300 to $500

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 6 months

Generally less expensive and easier to construct thanhand-knotted rugs, hand-tufted rugs are made using

a hand-operated tool to punch strands of wool or otherbers into canvas stretched on a frame. After tufting,

the rug is removed from the frame and a backing is applied.Bindings may be attached to the edges of the rug to add

strength and prevent unraveling.

DURABILITY: Lasts 3 to 10 years (5 to 10 years for Premium/ 3 to 6 years for Standard), depending on use.

SHEDDING: Sheds initial ly, subsiding over time. Degree

of shedding depends on wool quality and rug density.Less expensive hand-tufted rugs shed more than higher

end hand-tufted rugs.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: An adhesive is used to attach a canvas material

(backing) to the back of hand-tufted rugs to hold the yarnstogether. Tufted rugs typically have a cut pile surface, although

some designs have both loop and cut pile combined to adda dimensional effect to the pattern.

HAND-HOOKEDMSRP*: $200 to $800

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 6 months

Hand-hooked rugs go through the same process as hand-tuftedrugs. Tufted rugs, however, have a cut pile surface, while

hooked rugs feature a looped pile surface. Often, rugs willcombine both techniques.

DURABILITY: Lasts 3 to 10 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING: Sheds less than hand-tufted rugs, subsiding over time.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Simi lar to hand-tufted rugs, an adhesive is used

to attach a canvas backing to the back of hand-hooked rugsto hold the yarns together. The surface pile of a hand-hooked

rug will appear looped (rounded).

HAND-WOVEN SHAGMSRP*: $200 to $800

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 6 months

Hand-woven shag rugs are made on hand-operated looms withhundreds of plush, twisted and slightly felted yarns. A team

of weavers uses a long steel rod to shoot the bers across verticalstrings that run the length of the rug. Each ber can be as

long as 6".

DURABILITY: Lasts 2 to 8 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING (WOOL): Moderate shedding for an extended period, subsiding over time.

SHEDDING (POLYESTER): Minimal shedding

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Identiable by a deep pile, giving it a shaggyappearance. May or may not have a canvas backing.

HAND-WOVEN FLATWEAVEMSRP*: $200 to $600

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 6 months

Often referred to as dhurries or k ilims, atweave rugsare woven on a loom, rather than knotted. They are

typically constructed from wool, cotton or synthetic materials. In most cases, the pattern on the front of the rug can be

viewed clearly from both sides, making these rugs reversible.

DURABILITY: Lasts 3 to 10 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING: Moderate shedding, subsiding over time.

REVERSIBLE: Can extend rug life by ipping the rug.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Because they are woven rather thanknotted, atweave rugs do not have a tufted pile, which givesthem their “at” appearance when compared to other rug

constructions. The design of a atweave rug typically appearsthe same on the front as on the back.

*MSRP is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

**Manufacturing time on all rug construction types includes: spinning and dyeing wool,

weaving, nishing and transportation.

HAND-LOOMED WOOLMSRP*: $200 to $600

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 5 months

Hand-loomed wool rugs are constructed on hand-operatedlooms by a team of weavers who use a long steel rod to shoot bers across vertical strings that run the lengths of the rug. In this construction, rugs can be a ll cut pile, cut-and-loop pile or all loop pile. In some cases, the rug may be hand-carvedto accentuate texture and design.

DURABILITY: Lasts 2 to 8 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING: Moderate shedding, subsiding over time. Degree

of shedding depends on wool quality and rug density. Lessexpensive hand-loomed rugs will shed more than higher end

hand-loomed rugs.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Low to medium pile. May or may not havea canvas backing.

MACHINE-MADEMSRP*: $100 to $500

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 3 to 5 months

Machine-made rugs are produced by large machines thathave hundreds of spindles of ber that are mechanically woven

into a thin mesh backing. The machine runs continuously tooptimize efciency. A computer dictates the pattern, min imizing

the chance for error.

DURABILITY: Lasts 2 to 6 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING: Machine-made polyester rugs will not shed. Sincemost rugs of this type are made from synthetic bers, the

pile will crush with heavy trafc.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: As with hand-knotted rugs, the rug patternand colors are visible on the back of these rugs. However,

a coarse latex backing is used to secure the bers in place. Theback of a machine-made rug will look very un iform and even(in contrast to the back of a hand-knotted rug, which will have

slightly uneven knots).

INDOOR/OUTDOORMSRP*: $100 to $400

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 3 to 5 months

Indoor/outdoor rugs are made solely of synthetic bers— including olen, polyester, polypropylene and PVC (polyvinyl

chloride)—that have been infused with UV inhibitors tominimize fading. These rugs are mold- and mi ldew-resistant

and can withstand up to 500 hours of direct sunlight.

DURABILITY: Lasts 1 to 5 years for outdoor use and 2 to 8 yearsfor indoor use. Leaving the rug in direct sunl ight or standing water will signicantly limit its life.

SHEDDING: None.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: Indoor/outdoor rugs can be hand-hookedor machine-made and typically have a latex, rubber or

vinyl backing, which enables them to withstand the elements.

NATURAL FIBERMSRP*: $100 to $400

MANUFACTURING TIME**: 4 to 5 months

Whi le not a true construction, natural (plant-based) ber

rugs possess their own unique characteristics. They areconstructed of tightly woven bers such as bamboo, cotton, jute, linen, seagrass and sisal to create a casual and relaxed

look and feel. The bers are often bleached or dyed to increasedesign options and aesthetic appeal. It is important to keep

in mind that, as with other rugs, placing natural ber rugs indirect sunlight several hours a day can result in the fading of

dyed materials and gradual darkening of undyed bers. Naturalbers can be blended with other bers to create a multitudeof design options.

DURABILITY: Lasts 2 to 6 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING: Very minimal.

ADDIT IONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Static resistant, naturally insulating,eco-friendly/biodegradable.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: See “Rug Fiber Comparison” chart on page 32.

and pattern can be expected. Brands and other markings addcharacter to hide rugs—mak ing each a one-of-a-kind piece

to create a truly authentic look.

DURABILITY: Lasts 5 to 10 years, depending on use.

SHEDDING: Very minimal.

HOW TO IDENTIFY: These rugs typically have a felted backing.

ABOUT RUG COLOR While the Surya catalog and website provide an excellent guidefor evaluating a rug’s design and general appearance, samples

provide the best way to accurately evaluate color. Followingare some things to keep in mind when evaluating rug color:

Some bers are more reective than others and, depending onthe lighting in the room in which the rug will be placed,

the rug may appear lighter or darker than it does in product

photography. For example, a viscose rug will have more sheenand light-reective properties than a natural ber rug, andcolor may vary slightly when the rug is placed indifferent environments.

A rug’s colors can also vary depending on the angle at which

the rug is being viewed. For instance, when looking at one end  of the rug, you will see the at surface of the bers reectinglight. From the opposite side, you will see the trimmed end of

the bers, which reect light in a very different way.

It is important also to convey to consumers that handmade

rugs are made by artisans and are one-of-a-kind pieces. As

such, they may have subtle color variations due to the inherentcharacteristics of natural bers and dyes. If a customer is looking

for an exact color match, machine-made rugs are typically moreuniform from rug to rug.

Surya uses the Pantone® TPX color guide when assigning

colors to its products. Pantone® TPX colors provide a

standard “language” that is understood by designers aroundthe world, helping to ensure consistency and accuracy when referring to color.

TIPS TO ENSURE PROPER SIZE SELECTIONOne of the most common reasons that rugs are returned is

improper size selection. Choosing the correct rug size is essentialto lling a space properly and making the rug look the best

it can within a par ticular l iving area. It is important to note thatappropriate rug size should be determined based on furnitureconguration and not on room size alone.

LIVING ROOM #1Place the rug in front of the sofa. We recommend a rug that isat least 5' x 8', or approximately the length of the sofa. If possible,

leave a few inches of exposed oor between the rug and sofa toaccent the furniture. When the rug is under a coffee table, make

sure the rug is large enough to rest under all four legs of the table

5' x 8'

LIVING ROOM #2 Tuck the rug under the front legs of the sofa. The back legs

of the sofa can be situated on or off of the rug, dependingon personal preference. We suggest a rug that is 8' x 10' or larger.

The rule of thumb is to leave 18" to 24" between the wall andrug, creating a border of exposed oor that frames the furniturearrangement—equal on all four sides, if possible.

8' x 10'

LIVING ROOM #3Select a room-sized rug that allows the furniture to “oat” in

the center. We recommend a rug that is 10' x 13' or larger. Leave12" to 18" of exposed oor to create a border around the rug—

equal on all four sides, if possible.

COMMON RUG CHARACTERISTICS All of Surya’s rugs are handmade by skil led art isans, or in a

specialty manufacturing facility, and are inspected to ensurethat they meet quality standards prior to shipment.

We stand behind our products 100 percent and wil l alwaysaccept the return of defective merchandise. However, to avoid

unnecessary returns, there are common issues inherent inarea rugs that need to be explained to consumers when they are

purchasing a rug. The issues below are not considered defectsand, therefore, are not valid reasons for returning a product.

COLORNo two handmade rugs are the same, which is part of their

intrinsic appeal. Slight color variations are common forhandmade rugs, as dye lots may change over a period of time.

For the same reason, a rug’s color can vary slightly fromthe color of the sample since the sample was created at an

earlier time. See page 33—  About Rug Color —for additionalrug color considerations.

SHEDDING All wool rugs will shed. Shedding will subside over time, depending on trafc and wear. It typically takes 20 to 25 vacuums, at a minimum, to curtai l shedding. Some rugs will

shed for the lifetime of the rug. Hand-knotted rugs wil lshed less than hand-tufted rugs, and higher end hand-tufted

rugs wi ll shed less than lower end hand-tufted rugs.

SPROUTSLoose bers that extend from the top of the rug, or “sprouts,”

are a normal part of the break-in process of handmaderugs. To remove sprouts, use a small pair of scissors to snip

them off even with the rug pile. Do not pull out bers, as

this can cause the rug backing to deteriorate and cause gapsin the rug.

CREASESIf a rug has been rolled or folded for shipping, it may havecreases. Creases should disappear within a week or two when

the rug is laid out at. Reverse rolling the rug overnight

with the pile to the outside wi ll help to expedite crease removal.

ODORRugs recently removed from a bag may have an odor. Odors arecaused by dyes, yarns and shipping for long distances in sealed

wrap. Most odors dissipate within a week once the rug is removedfrom the shipping wrap.

FADING

If exposed to direct sunl ight, rug colors typically fade over time, even if they are fade-resistant. On sunny days, it is recommendedto use window shades or curtains to reduce sun exposure. Rugs

in areas exposed to sunlight should be rotated at least every sixmonths to minimize fading.

WEAR As a general rule, rugs of all materials and constructions shouldbe rotated at least every six months to evenly distribute wearand extend the life of the rug.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF A RUG

Rugs are one of the easiest ways to freshen the look, color andstyle of a living space. Like any investment, a rug must be

cared for properly if it is to last. Following are tips for extendingrug life.

HOW TO VACUUM A RUGCanister vacuums without beater bars are the optimal type

of vacuum to use on rugs. Brooms and manual sweepersare also a gentle and effective way to clean rugs. Powerful

bagless vacuums are not recommended, as they use highsuction, which can pull out threads from the back of a rug

and create “sprouts.”

• Use the hand-held attachment to vacuum a rug,

 whenever possible.

• If a hand-held attachment is not available, make sure to

turn off the vacuum’s beater bar, as it can pull bersfrom the face of the rug and cause the rug to fuzz. If the

beater bar cannot be turned off, set it on the highestposition possible before vacuuming.

38 SURYA TRAINING MANUAL | SPRING 2015

• If the rug has serged (nished) edges, refrain from continuouslyrunning the vacuum over the edges, as this will loosen bers

around the edges and cause them to deteriorate.

• Avoid running the vacuum over the fringes at the ends of the

rug, as fraying may occur. Use the hand-held attachment toclean the fringes.

• If a rug is reversible, make sure to vacuum both sides. This willremove grit and grime that can prematurely wear out the rug.

HOW TO CLEAN A RUG• Clean spills immediately. Once a stain is set, it becomes much

more difcult to clean. Surya’s Rug & Fabric Stain Removercan help to eliminate many stubborn stains.

• Never rub a spill, as this forces the spill deeper into the rug.Instead, blot the stain with a clean white cloth.

• For wool rugs, use lukewarm water to remove any residualstain, as wool is more prone to bleeding and staining

than synthetic bers.

• Always use clean water to remove any remaining cleaner and

dry towels to absorb any residual moisture.

PROFESSIONAL CLEANING FOR A HANDMADE RUG• Always use a professional, and reputable, area rug cleaning

expert. Cleaning a handmade rug requires a process differentthan cleaning wall-to-wall carpet.

• Inspect the rug with the rug cleaning expert prior tocleaning. Get a signed receipt and guarantee of work before

the work is performed.

CLEANING GUIDELINES FOR RUGS

WOOL* AND SYNTHETIC FIBER RUGS

• With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot the stainas much as possible.

• Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.

• Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water.

With a clean sponge and soap mix (avoid using excessive water), gently remove the remainder of the sta in and then blotthe area with a dry towel.

*Avoid excessive heat or agitation, as wool rugs are more prone tobleeding and staining than synthetic rugs. We recommend using

a professional rug cleaner on an annual basis.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR RUGS• With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot the stain

as much as possible.

• Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.

• Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water. With a clean sponge and soap mix, remove the remainder of the

stain. Al low the area to dry.

• For all-over cleaning, spray the rug with a mixture of soap

and water and rinse with a garden hose. Dry in sunlight.

NATURAL FIBER RUGS• Natural ber rugs ( Jute, Seagrass, Sisal) inherently have loose

bers and knots. Regularly vacuum rug on low power setting,

making sure to vacuum from different angles.

• Loose threads on the face of the rug should be trimmed with

household scissors. To avoid unraveling or damaging the rug, threads on the rug’s face should never be pulled.

• Spills should be blotted gently with a clean, undyed cloth to

absorb as much of the spill as possible and prevent spreading. Work from the outer edges of the spill towards the center.

If applying cleaning solvents, test on a small area rst. For stubborn stains, use a professional cleaning service that

specializes in wool rugs. Do not dry clean the rug, as strongcleaning chemicals may damage or fade the rug.

SHAG RUGS• Spray extraction (along with use of a wool-approved product

for wool rugs) can be used to clean shag rugs.

• Shedding is normal for wool shag rugs and decreases over time.Do not pull out yarns, as this may result in damage to the rug

• Canister vacuums without a beater bar are most effective incleaning shag rugs. Vacuums with beater bars and/or brushes,

or those set too low, may damage the face of the rug.

HAIR-ON-HIDE• To clean a hair-on-hide rug, simply shake out the hide, use

a manual sweeper, or vacuum it using a hand-held attachment.

If a hand-held attachment is not available, turn off the vacuum’s beater bar or, if that is not possible, set the beater

bar on the highest position.

• While a hide's natural oils help to resist staining, spills

should always be wiped up as soon as possible by lightlyblotting the area of the spill. If a stain should occur,

use mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush to verygently rub in the same direction as the grain of the hair.

• Professional cleaning on an annual basis is recommended.

RUG STORAGEProper rug storage is crucial to prolonging the life and beautyof a rug. The ideal storage location is a room that is cool and dry

and where blinds or curtains block natural light. Rugs shouldnever be stored in attics and basements, as these areas typically

lack climate control, and temperature and humidity can varysignicantly. In addition, rugs should not be stored directly on

the oor since carpet beetles in particular are attracted to thearea between the oor and the back of a rug.

• Storage areas should be cleaned periodically to remove dustand discourage insects.

• A rug should always be rolled with the pile facing in.

• Heavy objects should never be placed on top of a rolled rug,

as this can crease the rug and damage the backing.
