2010 Project Consultant, “MEET THE BEATIES: A MULTIMEDIA ENTERTAINMENT-

EDUCATION SERIES AND ONLINE COMMUNITY TO PROMOTE TREATMENT

ADHERENCE AMONG DIABETIC CHILDREN AND TEENS,” A Concept Paper by

Renee Hobbs and David Cooper Moore, Temple University School of Communications

& Theater. Overview: We seek grant funding to support phase 1 research associated with the

development of an online multimedia education program designed to help type 1 and type 2 diabetic children ages 9 to 14 better manage their disease. Working in an interdisciplinary context with experts in communication, pediatric nursing, public health and medicine, we will develop a theoretical model that specifies why online multimedia education programs may improve treatment adherence, conduct formative research to understand the specific emotional and social needs of children and young teens who are diagnosed with diabetes, and develop collaborative relationships with leading researchers in pediatric psychology who specialize in research on adherence and its relationship to psychosocial dimensions of treatment for diabetic youth. Then, working with a team of musicians, animators and online software developers, we will create an online multimedia program consisting of short animated music programs embedded in an online community. Finally, we will conduct a small controlled experiment to measure the impact of participating in the program on children’s adherence to treatment, self-concept, quality of family communication and other variables associated with socioemotional control in children and teens. In phase 2, extramural funding will enable us to develop the complete multimedia project.

submitted to National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR) in 2007 by Dr. Finestone, who

is Emeritus Dean of Continuing Medical Education in the TU School of Medicine. NOTE:

Although we worked together earnestly and in good faith, with Dr. Finestone’s good

assistance, the proposal did not come to fruition.

Spring, 2010 Project Advisor for Anthony George Giannoumis, MPH student, for

CHPSW Research Symposium, entitled, “Providing a Global Perspective to Nursing Students.”

This project was initiated during Summer Session 1, 2009, when Mr. Giannoumis was a student

in N-5555, “Health Policy for Diverse Communities.”

The purpose of this project is to persuade the two accrediting bodies for nursing

education in the United States to incorporate curricular innovations that include content

and process educational standards for nursing care of international persons. The current

nursing education standards provided by the National League for Nursing Accreditation

Page 18: SUSAN B. DICKEY - Temple University · C.V. - Susan B. Dickey, PhD, RN page 1 Curriculum Vita SUSAN B. DICKEY ... L. Musolf Neri, Eds.: Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy. Springhouse,

Commission (NLNAC) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

have limited or no recommendations for curricular provisions related to international

nursing. A review of evidenced based research on institutions providing such coursework

in nursing education shows positive benefits to practice, professional scope, and future

policy involvement. Such work indicates that the NLNAC and CCNE include specific

provisions requiring schools of nursing to demonstrate that their curricula meet standards

of inclusion of international nursing components for diverse populations. By

implementing such standards, schools of nursing may choose to leverage the existing

infrastructure, utilize opportunities for interdepartmental collaboration, or incorporate

additional recommended coursework and demonstration of proficiencies as requirements

for meeting terminal curricular objectives. Please view a presentation of this report at
