!!AT!THE!BELL!! ! Being totally mystified by the complexities of the slide projector President Larry was seconds late ringing the July 20th 2018 meeting of Sebastopol Rotary to order. Mark Fink got everything going by leading us in the Pledge to the Stars and Stripes.

He was followed by Steve Beck (performing double duty) first leading us in song, "America'' and then providing us with two thoughts for the day, (1) '' when you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth==think of algebra'' thought provided by Will Rogers. (2) ''If you don't learn to laugh at trouble, you won't have anything to laugh at when you are old''(Anon) After a brief respite to enjoy our fine lunch Fearless Leader started things off again. !

Prez Larry announced that Past President Jack Blasco is back and recovered from the blood clot in his foot. Good to see you buddy. Stay well.

Frank Mayhew stepped to the podium to announce that the RI Foundation in conjunction with several different Rotary Clubs in Sonoma County had come up with the $120,535 to fund the Anthill Project - Keeping Girls in School . Over $5000 came directly from the youth in InterAct clubs in the District. The purpose of the Anthill Project is to improve the hygiene situation in schools in Uganda. In Uganda 70% of the girls drop out of school before they reach the age of 13, while 51% of boys do. One of the reasons has been the sanitary conditions that exist. The Anthill Project is changing this by building

sanitary accommodations. Of the $120,535 that was donated by Rotary to help this situation, $67,075 came from local Rotary Clubs and $53,460 came from the Rotary Foundation. With the approval of this grant by Rotary International, this school was able to provide their students with clean running water, and clean gender based latrines. Frank Mayhew spent countless hours working on the grant including traveling to Uganda. We thank you Frank.

Cory Maguire gave us an update on the condition of Dennis and Anna Judd. Dennis has returned to normal health having beaten the cancer curse and is getting better every day. At the same time his wife Anna is facing her battle and has been through extreme treatments for her leukemia diagnosis. She has been sharing detailed informative progress via postings on her CaringBridge.com site. Her tone and words come with an amazing grace. Anna's most recent posting affirmed that for her surgery was scheduled for this past Tuesday. Somehow the Judd's daughter has been taken care through all of this.- Miracles do occur. Keep Dennis and Anna in your thoughts and prayers. !

!!RECOGNITIONS Greg Jacobs was dinged $5 for a fishing trip that he took on the upper Sacramento River that coincided with his 7/17 Birthday. He also parted with another $5 for the birthday.

Frank and Kathy Mayhew had to cough-up $5 for enjoying another year of wedded bliss. Frank said that he forgot the 7/16 event. Frank did not say whether or not he slept on the couch.

Jack and Ruthie Dunlap celebrated their 7/18 anniversary by spending a week in Hawaii with six of their kids and grandkids. The condo they stayed in was one that they bid on and won in last year’s lobster feed.

Since they will be baking pies in Memorial Hall for the Apple Fair on 8/10, the meeting on that date will be held at Torrey Olson's Gabriel Farms. Yvonne Thielen will be providing flu shots at the 10/5 meeting

The Club picnic will be held on 8/18 at Bob Hirsch's place. For details see Bob Cugini or Ellen Harrington. The Fall Fund Raiser will be on October 27th at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club; Due to the space available tickets will be limited to 200. This year the food and wine will be catered, so no prep work will be required. The bar will be hosted so just come and plan on having a whole lot of fun. PDG Bob Rogers will be in charge of the live auction and Ellen Harrington will be handling the silent auction.

Jorgen Holst came forward to introduce our program and guest speaker for the day Susan O'Sullivan. Susan is the director of development and external relations for FILOLI a historic country estate and public garden located in

Woodside California. Susan has been at Filoli for eight years.!Filoli gets its name from 3 different phrases-- (1) FI- Fight for a just cause (2) LO Love your fellow man and (3) LI Live a good life. The mission of Filoli is ''To be dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the cultural traditions and natural history of this country estate for public education and enjoyment'' Filoli is a 501c corporation responsible for all operations and maintenance. The property is owned by the National Trust and leased to the Filoli Center. The historic house is a member of American Alliance Museums. The Public Garden is a member of the American Gardens Association, and it is California Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a Nature Preserve.

The Mansion was first constructed in 1917and opened to the public in 1976. Its garden is 16 acres. It has an operating budget of $57 million. 175,000 people come to visit each year. Prominent San Franciscans Mr and Mrs William Bowers Bourn II owners of Empire Gold Mine in Grass Valley purchased 709 acres in 1914 and broke ground for the mansion in 1915 and moved into the house in 1917. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bourn died in 1936. The mansion has 54,000 square feet, has 56 rooms, 10 family bedrooms, 14 staff bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. Today the total land is 654 acres with 6 distinct eco systems and 7 miles of hiking trails plus a 1 mile estate trail.

Some of the events that have taken place this year are (1) Jan 7 through Feb 18 Winter At FILOLI featuring FILOLI a photography exhibit. (2) Feb 23-May 20 Spring at FILOLI Palette of Flowers featuring the 20th annual art exhibit. (3) May 30 to Aug 30 colors of California, featuring the art of Roland Petersen (4) Sept 7- Nov 4 Fall at FILOLI featuring an exhibit of fall paintings and antique farm equipment. (5) Nov 15- Dec 23 The Holidays at FILOLI Luminous a celebration of light and color, featuring decor in the house and evening lights and display in the garden.
