Chairman’s Report by Dr John Godfrey
We also had the pleasure during the year of a private visit to Glyndebourne Opera House at the invitation of Mr Gus Christie, which was much enjoyed by a number of members and suppor ters.
The focus of the Trust’s work remains the annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards scheme, which is designed to recognise and reward high quality conservation and restoration projects, and the good design of newly built projects, and to encourage the use of traditional skills and crafts. Winners receive a hand-crafted slate plaque which is to be attached to the winning project. There may also be Highly Commended projects in any given category. All par ties involved in the winning projects receive cer tificates. In its 19th year in 2017, the Awards scheme is now generally recognised as the most prestigious architectural and conservation programme in East and West Sussex and Brighton & Hove.
Sussex Heritage Trust is a registered charity established in 1977 to preserve, improve and encourage the appreciation of the architectural and natural landscape of Sussex.
2017 marked the 40th anniversary of the Trust’s foundation and the centrepiece of our celebrations was a black-tie dinner at Petworth House in October by kind invitation of our President, Lord Egremont, Lady Egremont and the National Trust. The splendid evening was enhanced by the presence of Sandy Nairne, former director of the National Por trait Gallery and now a Trustee of the National Trust, who spoke to us eloquently and passionately about the impor tance of good design and care in our natural and built environments.
We do this by:-
• Recognising and celebrating high quality conservation, restoration and new build projects in Sussex
• Taking a strategic interest in Sussex building and landscape conservation issues
• Highlighting, sur veying and reporting on Buildings at Risk
• Working with government agencies, local authorities and community groups on heritage projects
• Offering relevant educational opportunities for young people based in Sussex.

Chairman’s Report - continued
included the Community Playcentre @ Walber ton (The Mar tin Sewell Building Company), creating a purpose-designed, sustainable community building and Trinity Medical Centre and Pharmacy, Brighton, which saw the conversion of a redundant Grade II listed church into a medical centre.
On Hound Lodge, the judges repor ted: “Wow! A project executed with great skill (superb flint work) and passion. The original features being accurately restored and enhanced with the new construction sensitively blending in. The heritage of Sussex is in very good hands.” On the i360, the judges repor ted: “Brilliant concept, brilliant execution. An iconic statement that helps to define Brighton & Hove as a distinctive city. The ver tical pier concept works well and the restaurant facilities even framed the former West Pier beautifully. Magnificent élan, great style and panache. A delight to experience.” The Depot, Lewes, attracted the following comments: “The Depot Cinema has re-used a redundant warehouse and extended it to create a new townscape and community amenity performing functions far beyond the cinematic experience. The financial commitment was high and has enabled a completed project of exceptional attention to detail in every respect. The architect and the Depot team are responsible for a stunning new gateway into Lewes.” We were also pleased to recognise as the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Richard Crook, Senior Par tner in John D Clarke Architects of Eastbourne. Born and bred in Eastbourne, Richard has specialised in the care, restoration and extension of Listed Buildings during his career and has won many
The 2017 Awards scheme was launched in February at UTC@Harbourside. Winner of a Sussex Heritage Trust Award in 2016, the conversion and extension of two listed, 19th-century harbour-side marine workshops into a new University Technical College demonstrates the diversity of the Award scheme. Harvey’s Brewery kindly sponsored the event which included an inspiring tour of the venue by Chairman of UTC, Paul Bevan and Principal, Adanma Umunna. Following the launch, 66 entries were received for Awards this year, reflecting the ever increasing popularity of the Awards scheme. Judging took place over two days in May and I place on record my thanks to the team of judges who give their time freely to visit all the entered projects and produce authoritative and reasoned repor ts.
Following the judges’ recommendations, 26 Awards and 16 Highly Commended projects were announced this year at the sell-out Awards luncheon hosted by our President, Lord Egremont, in July at Pangdean Old Barn, Pyecombe. Pangdean Old Barn, itself a previous Award winner, is an 18th-century flint barn conver ted into an outstanding and successful events venue. Once again, we were warmly welcomed and enter tained by Nikki Currie and her team. 2017 Award winners included Hound Lodge at Goodwood, Chichester (Ptolemy Dean Architects), the i360 in Brighton (Marks Barfield Architects) and the Depot Cinema in Lewes (Burrell Foley Fischer LLP), the former Harvey’s Brewery depot site, which now houses a 3-screen independent cinema with community and film education facilities. awards for his work. He has been Architectural Adviser to the Eastbourne Society for over 40 years and writes on the history of the architecture of the town. It was a pleasure to name Richard as Sussex Heritage Person of the Year.
During the year, we maintained our campaign, with BT, the South Downs National Park, the Sussex Association of Local Councils and Sussex Newspapers to save the remaining K6 red telephone boxes in Sussex. A number of successful projects were completed during the year and we were pleased to see Ticehurst Parish Council win the prize for the best project completed during the year, when they refurbished the redundant telephone box in the village square, installing a defibrillator and a mosaic floor, designed by pupils at the local primary school. We also continued the successful bursary scheme we run with the Historic Houses Association and the Weald & Downland
Living Museum to suppor t young people wishing to take advantage of shor t courses on traditional building techniques.
The success of the Awards scheme, and the work of the Trust in general, depends on the generosity of our sponsors and the voluntary work of Trustees, proper ty professionals and lay people who give freely of their time to suppor t our work as judges and fund-raisers. During the year we said farewell and thank you to two retiring Trustees (Cecilia Gillette and Deborah Chiver ton) and welcomed Graham Peters, Angela Hobson and Sarah Chapman as new Trustees. As ever, I am very grateful to all Trustees, par ticularly Simon Knight, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Awards Committee, and our hard-working Administrator, Helen Reeve. We look forward to 2018 with confidence and anticipation.

The trust initially identifies the costs of its suppor t functions. It then identifies those costs which relate to the governance function. Having identified its governance costs, the remaining suppor t costs together with the governance costs are appor tioned between three key charitable activities in the year. Refer to the table below for the basis for appor tionment and the analysis of suppor t and governance costs.
