Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste generation from the electronicassembly includes:
1. Solid waste (rags, containers, cleaning supplies used with hazardous materials). Send to landfill.
2. Flammable liquids. Send as fuel supplement.3. Used oils. Send to recycle or fuel supplement.4. Fluorescent bulbs. Send to landfill.5. Empty drums. Send to landfill.6. Solder dross. Send to recycle

Solid waste (P2 opportunity)
Solid waste is being segregated with theobjective to reuse / recycle as much as possible, reducing waste send to landfill.Contaminated Rags – Send to incinerationPlastics – Send to RecyclePaper and plastics that contain solder paste – Send to recycle the metals.

Flammable liquids
Flammable liquids, starting on July 2007, Motorola change the Isopropanol base flux to a water base flux reducing the purchase of Hazardous Materialsand VOC’s generation to the air. The project lasteda year due to pilot runs setup in the wave soldermachines.

Household Hazardous Waste CollectionIn 2006 Motorola, EHS Maquila Association (APSA) and the Municipal EPA, participated in a Household hazardous waste collection.
This is the first activity done in the State of Sonora and was sponsored by the Border 2012 program between US and Mexico to improve the quality of the environment.
There is an initiative scheduled for 2008 from several local industries approve by Semarnat, to have a systematic process to received house hold hazardous waste from the community and send it to an approved location for disposal. This includes: oils, paints, chemicals use for cleaning, batteries, medication and computers.

Non-Hazardous Waste Program
Motorola’s Generation of non-hazardous waste includes:
Cardboard, Paper, Plastics, Metals, Construction Waste, Organic waste,
electronic Waste, Wooden Pallets and Solder dross.

Earth Day
To celebrate earth day Motorola and other local industries participated in an event to build “papercrete”blocks, using recycled paper from the processes.
The project has the objective to built the first greenhouse in Nogales by December 2007. The team completed 869 blocks exceeding the goal of 800.
The event had the participation of the Mayor, General Managers from the Industries and the Semarnat (EPA) State Director.
