IN AUSTRALIA, WE PRIORITISE THE AREAS WHERE WE CAN MAKE THE GREATEST DIFFERENCE. WE ARE FOCUSED ON THE SAFETY AND ENGAGEMENT OF OUR PEOPLE, SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING, ENERGY, WATER MANAGEMENT AND THE WELLBEING OF OUR CONSUMERS.

Committed PartnersWe are proud that in 2019, we contributed over $1 million to social enterprises in support of employment opportunities for disadvantaged groups in Australia.

We are also a member of Supply Nation, the largest national directory of verified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, and in 2019 we procured goods and services worth over $260,000 from Indigenous suppliers.

In addition, we have also made a multi-year investment of $1.95 million in Fairtrade’s community cooperatives through the purchase of Fairtrade coffee for our Grinders Coffee brand.

Engaged PeopleAt Coca-Cola Amatil, protecting the health and safety of our people and those we work with will always be our overriding priority. Total injuries in Australia in 2019 were 66 compared to 59 in 2018, but we have seen an overall reduction of 77 per cent compared to the 2012 baseline.

We believe our people feel engaged and included. This was evidenced by our 2019 employee engagement scores, where Australia registered an impressive increase of 12 percentage points.

Coca-Cola Amatil supports employee volunteering and fundraising, professional pro-bono services and matched workplace giving. All of our Australia-based employees receive one day’s paid leave a year for volunteering, and in 2019, 114 people accessed this leave. Paid leave is also provided, at the discretion of managers, for volunteering with emergency services.

In December 2017 we launched Amatil’s Human Rights Policy. In 2019 we rolled out a comprehensive training program on our Human Rights Policy, and also conduct supplier screening using responsible sourcing criteria which includes consideration of human rights.

CREATING A MENTALLY HEALTHY WORKPLACEIn September 2019, Coca-Cola Amatil was awarded with Gold Accreditation from Mental Health First Aid Australia, for being a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Skilled Workplace. At that time, Coca-Cola Amatil was the only FMCG company in Australia with MHFA Accreditation.

Delighted ConsumersWe are committed to offering choice and information to our consumers. We measure the amount of sugar per 100ml of our non-alcoholic beverages portfolio and aim to reduce total sugar per 100ml by 10 per cent in Australia1. We have also joined with industry peers in Australia to set an industry-wide pledge of a 20 per cent reduction in sugar per 100ml across our non-alcoholic beverages portfolio by 2025.

By the end of 2019, we had made good progress towards our sugar reduction goals for our non-alcoholic beverage portfolio. We have reformulated 25 products since 2015, including five in 2019, and reduced our sugar grams per 100ml in Australia by 8.8 per cent compared to the 2015 baseline.

We continue to focus on community investment and impact in Australia. Since its establishment in 2002, The Coca-Cola Australia Foundation has provided more than $16 million to hundreds of charities, positively impacting the lives of many young Australians. We also manage several community investment programs, which include contributions from our sponsorship and marketing activities to support grassroots sports and community development initiatives, including in Indigenous communities.

Finally, we provide water, food and other aid to people impacted by natural disasters, and to support community resilience beyond the immediate aftermath. In 2019, the combined value of our cash, in-kind and volunteering hours support was A$2.3 million in Australia.

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC BOTTLE FOR CARBONATED BEVERAGESAustralia is the first country in the world where all Coca-Cola bottles 600ml and under are made from 100 per cent recycled plastic. This innovation took nine years of extensive research, innovation and design, and makes recycled plastic the norm with seven out of 10 bottles now being made from 100 per cent recycled PET across the Amatil portfolio in Australia.

While 100 per cent recycled plastic had previously been used to bottle still beverages, it had never been successfully achieved at scale in carbonated drinks.

The Amatil Futureworks team and Packaging Services Division were able to overcome the challenge of using 100 per cent recycled PET to package carbonated beverages, creating smart bottle designs that factor in the unique qualities of recycled plastic. This increase in the use of recycled plastic reduces the amount of new plastic resin used by Amatil by an estimated 10,000 tonnes per annum in Australia.

“We’ve heard the community message loud and clear – that unnecessary packaging is unacceptable, and we need to do our part to reduce it,” said Peter West, Managing Director of Australia. “That’s why we’ve taken this step to make recycled plastic the norm. It’s the single largest increase in recycled plastic use in our history, and our strongest step forward in reducing packaging waste and the environmental impact of our operations.”

The roll-out of increased recycled plastic across our range in Australia has been supported by a major advertising campaign to encourage further recycling.

In 2019, Coca-Cola Amatil also began exploring future opportunities for recycled plastic processing plants by signing a Heads of Agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding with potential partners in Australia and Indonesia.

Better EnvironmentIn early 2019, we implemented a Coca-Cola Bottler System first with a 100 per cent recycled PET plastic bottle for carbonated beverages. This innovation was developed by our team at Eastern Creek in NSW, and we are now producing all single-serve soft-drink and all water bottles in 100 per cent recycled plastic in Australia. By the end of 2019, seven out of 10 plastic bottles in Australia were being made from 100 per cent recycled material, with average recycled content, by weight, increasing to 38 per cent from 25 per cent in 2018.

To further ‘close the loop’ on our packaging, we are playing a pivotal role in container deposit and refund schemes where they operate around Australia, and in 2019, entered into a Heads of Agreement with Veolia Australia and New Zealand to explore opportunities for a recycled plastic processing plant in Australia.

Sustainable water management is a high priority for Amatil in Australia. We conduct vulnerability assessments of the water sources for all our non-alcoholic bottling plants. These plans are reviewed annually and updated every five years in light of changes that may have occurred in our business, the climate, and community and agricultural water usage. Together with The Coca-Cola Company, we also implement water replenishment programs. In 2019, we replenished an estimated 7,500ML through Australian projects, which is the equivalent of 237 per cent of the water used in our finished products.

We continue to invest in renewable energy projects. This includes three onsite solar projects in Australia – at Eastern Creek, Richlands and Kewdale – with combined generation capacity of 3.5 megawatts. We have also entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with the Murra Warra Wind Farm in Victoria, which became operational in 2019.

We screen supplier spending using responsible sourcing criteria, including with respect to environmental impacts and management, and in Australia, 100 per cent of the sugar we use is certified under either Bonsucro or Smartcane Best Management Practice.
