A Discussion on SustainabilityIn the built environment what is really sustainable?
Sustainable vs. GreenAs the market demand trends more towards all things “green” we
have to ask ourselves what that really means.
Sustainable has a specific meaning that can be quantified and measured.
• A sustainable approach or product uses less resources and can be reused
• A sustainable product is inherently efficient• A sustainable product will have little or no adverse health effects
Green is a color. In the context of building projects, green is essentially a marketing word used to elicit an emotional response.
The conclusion is that a sustainable approach is both quantifiable and measurable and a green approach is just marketing.

How Does “Sustainable” Work?Is it a philosophy? And if so, how can I install it in a building?
Sustainability is an approach. A sustainable product is developed using the philosophy and will work like any product you are currently using. There might be some modification required in the actual installation process, or there might not.
Sustainable products among other things will: • Be made from renewable resources or reclaimed waste
materials• Be recyclable or reusable at the end of life• Contain no toxins or chemicals that will have an adverse effect
on the workers or final inhabitants• Perform as well as, or better than, the products being used now

Maximizing Efficiency and Cost EffectivenessThe Bottom Line
Does Sustainable Cost More?To be adopted a sustainable product needs to be cost competitive.
That being said, there are a number of factors to consider.• The product can be one-to-one price competitive to current
product• You may need less of the product to do the same job making it
cost competitive• Several functions may be performed allowing you to use less
overall product in construction lowering the overall cost• It may take less time to install a product saving labor coasts • Future legal issues might be averted by using products less likely
to mold, absorb moisture, allow sound to become an issue or cause allergic reactions
• Less sick day call-outs delaying construction due to employee reactions to toxic products

An Updated Definition of CostThis is a new way of looking at development and building that
includes:• Lifecycle analysis• Total cost of ownership• Return on investment• Long-term risk assessment
These are not nebulous concepts that focus on the green or environmental, they are business terms that focus on doing the job well with a profit.
What is needed to make this a true business function are products and technologies that meet the cost benefit needs of the project as well as the resource and environmental goals being adopted.
As resources diminish and costs rise, sustainable and efficient products become even more cost effective when applied to a business model.

The Overarching ImpactA sustainable approach will have an end to end positive impact that
will include benefits from the designer, the builder, the management and the inhabitant. The benefits will be quantifiable and will:
• Be cost competitive in the short term or have a significant return on investment
• Address lifecycle and or cradle to cradle goals
• Meet and/or exceed current product/technology performance
• Provide a reasonable cost benefit compared to traditional methods and products/technologies
• Reduced risk of litigation from some of the most common causes:• Moisture/Mold• Sound• Structural integrity

Define
•Technologies, products, and services are defined by customer requests, projects developed by CTTA or a gap identified in an industry specific portfolio
Research
•A Member Services Researcher looks for companies that provide these technologies, products or services and eliminates those not commercialized.
Review
•A Member Services Coordinator reviews the companies that made the first cut and looks for news and information regarding performance, customer service, complaints, and resolutions
Contact
•The remaining companies will be contacted through their web-based channels to see how they respond to a request to develop a business relationship. 60% fail to respond to their communication process
Screen
•Those that respond are asked to engage in a 15 minute phone meeting to determine if there is a mutual value to continuing the process, less than 25% make it through the meeting and member referral stages
Validate
•The remaining candidates are invited into an interview process that engages them in a 2-3 hours interview where they are asked to discuss business planning, supply chain, customer and supplier relations, problem solving, etc.
Remarkable Companies with Sustainable ProductsSustainable, Cost Effective and Simply the Best
IntroductionEvery company in the list below has been through an intensive
screening and validation process. Does that mean they are perfect? No. It means they meet the requirements that CTTA puts forth as the most important when engaging a business in meeting your needs:• Is the company the best?
• Is the company transparent?
• Does the company have and foster high integrity?
• Does the company have solid business practices?

American Green LightsWaste reduction, sustainability, and efficiency just got easier in American cities,
thanks to American Green Lighting! AGL jumped at the chance to help
municipalities upgrade lighting environments for their citizens and workers, a
task that was costing far too much in time, testing, failures and frustration for
all concerned. AGL takes time with each client to assess the best technology
solution for each project - they're technology agnostics! By doing what they do
best - seek, review, test, and evaluate emerging lighting technologies - clients
enjoy confidence and relief when the lights go on. Now AGL are offering their
expertise to other organizations who value "enlightenment" that is sustainable,
efficient, and effective - such as universities (which really are their own kind of
cities). By remaining focused on bringing green lighting technologies that are
the products of green processes, AGL lightens the burden of effective
implementation and spotlights the good work being done all around us.

Charter ConstructionHeroic is the description... Frank Firmani started in 1983 with a
shop full of tools, $700 and a commitment to craftsmanship
and longevity. Today, Charter Construction offers guarantees in a
world where those are as rare and priceless as clear, wild streams.
They’ve successfully mixed friends and business, with half of their
friends also being their customers and most new customers
finding them through word of mouth. Charter knows that
relationships are the foundation of longevity, so they care for
their employees, customers, vendors, resources, and wastes.
They are LEED certified, offer both construction and repair
services, and have very low turnover - so you know you can
depend on them to take care of you, your project, and your

Classic Woodworking

It could be confusing. Beautifully crafted wood cabinets
surrounding benches and chairs; you may think you’re in a
boardroom. But then people start taking off their clothes! Hold on
- you’re actually in one of the most elite locker rooms created by
Classic Woodworking, envied by many for it’s opulent beauty. But
wait - what’s this? It’s also LEED certified? With post-market
materials and AutoCAD design? That’s good business! The green
practices of Classic Woodworking are gaining more and more
attention in boardrooms around the world. But be careful -
boardrooms are probably not ready for the practices of locker
rooms, even if they are gorgeous and good.
DinoflexDinoflex is in the karma business. They have embraced the icon of American decay -
the abandoned tire - and have used it to supply a life-cycle of exponential returns.
Dinoflex tiles are composed of 90-100% recycled rubber tires; some are 80%
internally recycled! Yes, that means that in the distant future, when a tile finally
wears out after being moved, switched, and flipped multiple times, Dinoflex
customers return them for reincarnation. Along with an awesome manufacturing
process, Dinoflex attends to the future returns of creating a healthy atmosphere
(both physically and personally), choosing quality and strength over cheap and fast,
and constantly revisiting how waste can be reduced. They believe “change begins
with choice” and show it through choosing to work for some of the most prestigious
certifications in corporate responsibility to the planet, including sourcing most of
their materials within 500 miles of processing. Yep - Dinoflex’s karma has definitely
run over the dogma of “business as usual.”

HomasoteSteeped in a history rich in creativity, exploration, and innovation,
Homasote exemplifies what organizations can achieve over time with
agility and responsibility. This company is the “greenprint” for what
sustainable business does in and for our world. Still, I will always
remember the Lipizzans. Yes, before the first cars and trains, the
Arctic exploration, or the world-class closed-loop water recycling in
their manufacturing I will remember Homasote for Lipizzans. I was
entranced by them as a child - fantasy white horses dancing ON
HOMASOTE PANELS! 100% recycled content Homasote panels used
for temporary structures in wars, sound barriers in LEED buildings,
and decks to cover ice rinks were the choice as a dance floor for royal
horses. Really - if these panels could support tons of dancing horses
in echoey arenas without deafening us all, wouldn’t they be awesome
sound barriers and supports for little humans in high heels?

ReWallThe ReWall Company, LLC uses a proven European technology to recycle
polyethylene-coated cups, cartons, and their components into building
materials. The first U.S. ReWall products are manufactured in Des
Moines, Iowa, and distributed nationally. Almost all of our inputs are
sourced within 500 miles of our production facility.
They help recycle some of the 2 million tons of polyethylene-coated
cartons and cups that enter landfills every year. Those products were
first recycled in Europe through a process that has a smaller carbon
footprint and is more efficient than alternative processes that require
stripping away the plastic, removing the ink and salvaging the remaining
paper. The manufacturing process is environmentally friendly and does
not use added glue, water or chemicals. ReWall is 100% recycled.

Roma BioEco Sustainable Building Technologies
Since the days of cave paintings, man has painted structures – that’s
almost 40,000 years of painting. Think of it … that's tens of millions of
gallons of paint produced and applied, and it never hurt people or the
planet! Then, 150 years ago they started using a technology reliant on
petroleum to make solvent-based oil paint. And paint became one of the
most polluting industries in the world. Even with the introduction of
automobiles, paint is only slightly lower as the second major source of
pollution. Every year, enough paint is produced to cover a 4-mile wide strip
around the equator.
Enough is enough. ROMA’s mission is to kick some ass and change the way
the world makes paints. Better products for you, your family and your
world.

ShelterWorks LTD.
ShelterWorks began by asking a question… and then two friends discussing
possible answers.
Thomas Van Denend and Paul Wood wanted to do something to make a
difference, something to make the world a little bit more sustainable.
Thomas comes from a strong business background and Paul from a wide
variety of endeavors whose common core was building. That discussion led
to putting together a plant to produce Faswall®, a building block with
European origins made from recycled mineralized wood fiber and cement.
Starting small and building their business in a sustainable way they
weathered the building industry collapse in 2008 and have continued to
grow as more and more home and commercial builders are moving towards
better, non toxic and sustainable solutions. CTTA engaged Shelter Works in
discussion because of the inherent efficiency and sustainability of their
product but invited them to be members because of their ingenuity, passion
and efficiently sustainable approach to building their business.
Thomas and Paul are committed to continual improvement to keep Faswall®
truly one of the most sustainable building materials on the market today.

Water Harvesting SolutionsWater is the topic of the decade. Questions are being generated by
environmentalists, politicians, industrial leaders, economists and people like you
and me. These questions frame a conversation about our future, and the
availability and cost of a resource basic to our survival. As clean water becomes
less available and more costly, our strategies on water use and reuse will define
our future. Water Harvesting Solutions (Wahaso) is taking the lead in water reuse
systems for commercial, industrial and high density residential buildings.
Understanding that the bottom line drives every decision, Wahaso not only has a
team of experts in engineering, fabrication, regulation and environmental issues,
they have developed a value-based process that eases adoption by calculating
each system’s return on investment through water savings and other benefits.
The ROI will only increase over time to provide even greater value to the building
owner, the tenants and the community.
