The construction industry is a crucial element of the Scottish economy and a key generator of economic growth; Construction Scotland estimates that for every £1 spent on construction output a further £2.94 is generated in the economy. The industry is also a significant employer with over 170,000 workers, and this is predicted rise to 265,000 by 2016.
While Scotland’s construction industry already contributes a great deal to economic development, there is scope to leverage additional benefits from construction spend. Construction procurement has been a key area of focus over recent years, particularly within the public sector where there has been a concerted effort to maximise ROI. Increasing attention in this area has driven the promotion of best practice policy, illustrating where construction spend can be used to leverage the widest possible gains across social, economic and environmental outcomes. Good procurement practice is now measured against its ability to deliver in these areas, and organisations within the supply chain are required to embed sustainability throughout the construction process.
This seminar will discuss the incorporation of sustainable principles throughout the construction process, focussing on the benefits of increasing SME inclusion within the supply chain, and considering opportunities where environmental improvements can be achieved. The agenda will feature a varied programme of presentations, case studies, workshops and discussion, affording an opportune forum for knowledge exchange and cross sector engagement.
