Sustainable Development

“It means development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs.”

Key concept

S  Need: S  To analysis the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which

overriding priority should be given.

S  Limitation: S  The limitation imposed by the state if technology and social

organization on the environment's ability to meet bith the present and future needs.

Madurai-The Temple city

S  Madurai, one of the fast growing city of Tamilnadu, having lot of historical importance and for temples.

S  It is been noted as our temple city of India , world famous Meenakshi Amman temple his sited here.

S  New International airport.

S  Madurai has shown as fast and attractive growth rate in real estate industry compared to other cities of TamilNadu. According to the survey, Madurai is in top 20 fast growing cities of India. Enroled in the smart cities program announced by the central government of India.

S  Other major cities, Coimbatore/Chennai being over populated, most of MNC company are now targeting Madurai for his expansion in both IT and Industrial sectors.

S  Madurai is located topographically at the center of Tamilnadu, helping connect all the villages surrounded to it and is the hub for most agricultural traders.

S  Madurai and it’s surrounding have more than 25 engineering college , 2 medical college and 50+ arts college producing more than 5000 graduate's locally.

S  A developed Village farm, trees, temples, and water resources.

S  Agriculture was the backbone.

S  Handloom garments.

S  Probably the worlds first mall was development in Madurai in 1628-35.

S  A city- polluted, no trees and water resources.

S  Small scale agri-products or spices trader’s and textile industry.

S  No human resource for handloom sector.

S  Big developments implemented with no sustainability.

Factors of Sustainable developments

S  Requires integration of economic and ecological system.

S  Government must make proper city planning and policies in support of it.

S  No fixed way or method exist to achieve sustainability, every country has to create a approach based on the both present and future need.

S  No immediate solution’s is available.

S  Government allowing construciton over lakes and river.

S  Airport runway over a dried-up river.

S  12,000 hecter of lake reduced to 600 hecter in my state.

S  All houses to have rain water harvesting.

S  Pollution policy for vehicles.

S  Logistic vehicle/trucks time slot to enter the city center.

S  New houses to have solar panel for water heaters.

S  Local council to collect house-hold Garbage twice a week.

S  Indian Prime-minister “Swachh bharat” for clean India mission.

S  Government review over present city blue-print, increase the number of dams.

Madurai-My style S  Educate people about sustainable development in social gathers like cinemas, public parks

and schools.

S  Implement policy to have compulsory theory exams, as conducted in the developed countries for driving licenses.

S  Policy or subsidy for using Renewable source of energy at both house-holds and industries.

S  Agriculture-India’s backbone, water should be supplied at a ‘price’ for non-agricultural activity, so the water wastage can be reduced.

S  In major cities government should introduce ‘cycle lane’ and ‘good public transport link’ to reduce pollution and traffic.

S  Reduce the conversion of agricultural land to non-agricultural.

S  Policies must be introduced to avoid development happening in dried-up river and lakes to avoid disaster's like in my neighbor cities.
