Sentences

Leader: Let us worship God.

People: Amen.

Leader: Over land and sea we have come, from coast to coast we have

come, from near and far, we have come to worship God.

People: From all walks of life we come as sojourners enlivened by our faith

in God and brought together by the redeeming love of Jesus.

Leader: To this place we come, just as we are, joined to each other by the

confession, “Jesus is Lord.”

People: Now the burdens are lifted from our souls, now the joy of freedom is

ours.

Leader: Let us worship God.

All: Amen.

Hymn of Praise …….…………………………………..….....… Lift Every Voice and Sing (Lyrics: James Weldon Johnson, Music:John Johnson)

1. Lift every voice and sing, till earth and Heaven ring,

Ring with the harmonies of liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,

Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on till victory is won.

2. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet,

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,

We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered;

Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

3. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

Thou Who hast brought us thus far on the way;

Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee.

Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee.

Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand,

True to our God, true to our native land.

Prayer of Adoration & Confession

Leader: Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you are present in our lives, teaching

us how to live by the example of his own life here on earth. In Jesus’

message you have let us see and touch your world to come. We

acknowledge your faithfulness which leads in the paths of truth,

knowledge and understanding.

People: O, how we adore you.

Leader: You are Sovereign Lord, there is none like you. Your amazing grace

and unfeigning love are forever. You are the source of all life, and

are not contained by time and space.

People: O how we adore you.

Leader: For the presence of your Holy Spirit upon our Annual Gathering and

upon the gifts we bring and for the unity in your love,

People: O how we adore you.

Leader: Merciful God, we acknowledge our faults, our weaknesses and our

failures. We confess that we have not lived by faith and that our

lives have been reduced to living in dependence upon our own

will. We confess that we have been self-serving, unloving, and not

the servant to others who you want us to be.

People: Forgive us for our lack of love and in your mercy make us what you

would have us be.

Leader: God, our God, we have marred your image in us. We are sorry and

ashamed. We have not been the centres of hope for those who

have lost their way or for those who are overburdened with need.

We have created divisions rather than fostered unity; we have

discriminated against others and have caused painful rifts. Take

away pride, greed and snobbery and liberate us so that we who

are redeemed may be one in power and purpose.

All: Have your way in us Lord, as we offer our whole selves to you in this

worship experience and through the course of our lives, in the name

of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer (Arr. Fr. Richard HoLung)

Chorus

Our Father who art in heaven, holy, holy, holy be Thy Name,

Our Father who art in heaven, holy be Thy name

Thy kingdom come on earth, Thy will be done on earth,

Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread (Repeat x 3)

And forgive us our trespasses (Repeat)

As we forgive those who trespass against us,

Forgive us our trespasses.

Do not lead us into temptation (Repeat)

But deliver us from all evil, (Repeat)

Amen, Amen, Amen! Amen, Amen, Amen!

Amen, Amen, Amen! Amen, Amen, Amen!

Hymn of Response…..............................................I’ll Go Where You Want Me To Go (Mary Brown, pub.1891)

1. It may not be on the mountain’s height

Or over the stormy sea;

It may not be at the battle’s front,

My Lord will have need of me;

But if by a still small voice He calls,

To paths that I do not know,

I’ll answer dear Lord, with my hand in Thine,

I’ll go where you want me to go.

I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord,

O’er mountain, or plain, or sea,

I’ll say what you want me to say, dear Lord,

I’ll be what you want me to be.

2. Perhaps today there are loving words

Which Jesus would have me speak;

There may be now in the paths of sin,

Some wand’rer whom I should seek;

O Saviour if Thou wilt be my guide

Though dark and rugged the way,

My voice shall echo Thy message sweet,

I’ll say what you want me to say.

3. There’s surely somewhere a lowly place,

In earth’s harvest fields so white,

Where I may labour through life’s short day,

For Jesus the Crucified,

So trusting my all to the tender care

And knowing Thou lovest me

I’ll do Thy will with a heart sincere

I’ll be what you want me to be.

Communion Hymns

Hymn……………………...….............................................. It Is A Thing Most Wonderful (Words: William Walsham How (1823-1897), 1872)

1. It is a thing most wonderful,

almost too wonderful to be,

that God's own Son should come

from heaven,

and die to save a child like me.

2. And yet I know that it is true:

He chose a poor and humble lot,

and wept, and toiled, and mourned,

and died,

for love of those who loved Him not.

3. I cannot tell how He would

love

a child so weak and full of sin;

His love must be most wonderful,

if He could die my love to win.

4. It is most wonderful to know

His love for me so free and sure;

but 'tis more wonderful to see

my love for Him so faint and poor.

5. And yet I want to love Thee, Lord;

O light the flame within my heart,

and I will love Thee more and more,

until I see Thee as Thou art.

Hymn.....................................................................The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power (Author: Andraé Crouch (1962))

1. The blood that Jesus shed for me,

Way back on Calvary;

Oh, the blood that gives me strength from day to day,

It will never lose its power.

Chorus

It reaches to the highest mountain.

It flows to the lowest valley.

The blood that gives me strength from day to day,

It will never lose its power.

2. It soothes my doubts and calms my fears,

And it dries all, all my tears.

The blood that gives me strength from day to day,

It will never lose its power.

Hymn….....................................................................................................And Can It Be (Words: Charles Wesley, Psalms and Hymns, 1738)

1. And can it be that I should

gain

An interest in the Savior’s

blood?

Died He for me, who caused

His pain—

For me, who Him to death

pursued?

Amazing love! How can it be,

That Thou, my God, shouldst

die for me?

Amazing love! How can it be,

That Thou, my God, shouldst

die for me?

2. ’Tis mystery all: the’Immortal

dies:

Who can explore His strange

design?

In vain the firstborn seraph tries

To sound the depths of love

divine.

’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,

Let angel minds inquire no

more.

’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore;

Let angel minds inquire no

more.

3. He left His Father’s throne

above

So free, so infinite His grace—

Emptied Himself of all but love,

And bled for Adam’s helpless

race:

’Tis mercy all, immense and

free,

For O my God, it found out

me!

’Tis mercy all, immense and

free,

For O my God, it found out

me!

4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,

Fast bound in sin and nature’s

night;

Thine eye diffused a

quickening ray—

I woke, the dungeon flamed

with light;

My chains fell off, my heart

was free,

I rose, went forth, and followed

Thee.

My chains fell off, my heart

was free,

I rose, went forth, and followed

Thee.

5. No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;

Alive in Him, my living Head,

And clothed in righteousness divine,

Bold I approach the eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Bold I approach the eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ my own

Blessing and Dismissal

Leader: Let us leave this place celebrating God’s faithfulness united by the

one who is the Bread of Life. Go in faith and look for the ones

whose broken lives need to be touched; find the ones who long for

healing.

And may God strengthen your sense of purpose,

May Jesus Christ fill you with his compassion,

And may the Holy Spirit enliven you for what is to come.

All: We go in faith armed in the strength of God, embracing the

compassion of Jesus Christ and alive in the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Recessional Song………......……………………...……………..…......... Give Me Jesus (Judith Gayle)

Refrain

Give me Jesus in the morning

Give me Jesus in the evening

Every minute of the day

Give me Jesus

He's my reason for living!

He's my source of survival

Every minute of the day

Give me Jesus

1. When all my friends forsake me

Looks like hope is lost

I call the name of Jesus

He knows where my future lies

When my soul is cast down

And my way looks dark

he softly comes & whisper:

"Child, your future is bright".

2. When all my friends forsake me

Looks like hope is lost

I call the name of Jesus

He knows where my future lies

When my soul is cast down

And my way looks dark

he softly comes & whisper:

"Child, your future is bright".

3. When my friends are gone

You give me Jesus

I got no food on my table

You give me Jesus

I got no shoes on my feet

You give me Jesus

No roof over my head

You give me Jesus

No clothes on my body

You give me Jesus

My parents are gone

You give me Jesus

My friends forsake me

You give me Jesus

I got no money in my pocket

You give me Jesus

We wish someone to hear

You give me Jesus

The world is living in fear

Give me Jesus

4. I give me Jesus, uhummm (repeat 3x)

All praise delivers high

Give me Jesus

I'm cast down

Give me Jesus

Perplexed on every side

Give me Jesus

I've been prosecuted

Give me Jesus

5. I gotta (3x) have Jesus

Oh I gotta (2x) have Jesus (repeat 2x)

Oh you gonna give me Jesus

Jesus in the morning, yeah

Jesus in the evening, yeah

Jesus in the midnight hour

You gotta (2x) have Jesus

I gotta (2x) have Jesus

You give me, give me Jesus

I give me, give me Jesus

There's power in the Name of Jesus

Hymn of Response ………………………………………………....Will your anchor hold (Lyrics: Priscilla Jane Owens 1829-1907; Music: William James Kirkpatrick 1838-1921)

1. Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,

When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?

When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,

Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

Chorus

We have an anchor that keeps the soul

Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,

Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,

Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

2. Will your anchor hold in the straits of fear,

when the breakers roar and the reef is near?

While the surges rave, and the wild winds blow,

shall the angry waves then your bark o'erflow?

3. Will your anchor hold in the floods of death,

when the waters cold chill your latest breath?

On the rising tide you can never fail,

while your anchor holds within the veil.

4. Will your eyes behold through the morning light

the city of gold and the harbour bright?

Will you anchor safe by the heavenly shore,

when life's storms are past for evermore?

Prayer of Covenant and Commitment

Leader: We the people of the Triune God, called by His name, moved by

the power of the Holy Spirit to gather in this the 165th General

Assembly and 4th Believers’ Convention of the JBU now enter into a

covenant agreement with each other.

All: As members of the wider Baptist family and the universal family of

believers in Christ, we join hands and heart in the single focus of

Living by Faith in God’s World.

Leader: We reaffirm our faith in a God whose love respects no barriers;

whose mercy reaches to the ends of the earth.

People: Confident of Christ’s abiding presence; we promise to live in faith

wherever we may be: in our private circles and in the public

square; among acquaintances or among strangers; at home or

abroad.

Leader: We reaffirm our faith in the God who established Baptist witness in

Jamaica in 1783 through the instrumentality of George Liele and

we celebrate his providence in forging a special partnership

between Jamaican and British Baptists over 200 years ago. We

celebrate the grace that has come to us through servants like

Liele, Baker, Burchell, Phillippo and Knibb, who planted and

nurtured churches, educating and liberating the people.

People: We pledge to honour this heritage by our openness to mission

partnerships that comfort the downtrodden and confront institutions

of injustice.

Leader: Do we not now sense a move of the Spirit bringing among us a

new climate of mission consciousness?

People: We have heard the voice of the Spirit speaking to us in these

meetings, putting mission on our mind.

Leader: Therefore, with the conviction that the gospel is the power of God

to set captives and captors free, to transform human mind and

spirit and bring about restoration and reconciliation, we firmly

resolve to carry on Christ’s mission.

People: As Christ’s humble servants we will make no apologies for mission,

but rather do everything to advance his cause: we will earnestly

pray about mission; we will cheerfully give to mission; we will

skillfully equip ourselves for mission; we will boldly participate in

mission.

All: Let us go forth then people of God! Let us take Christ’s message to

the nation, to the region, to the world!

Leader: All-sufficient God give us the grace to fulfill these pledges we have

made. Stamp the seal of your Spirit on the words imprinted on our

hearts. As you have stirred our minds, so strengthen our resolve; as

you have been with us in the past, so be with us in the future; as

you send us, so may you go with us, as you will give the increase so

may you alone receive all the glory, both now and forevermore.

Amen.

Blessing and Dismissal

Leader: May God the Father, who made from one every nation that

occupies the earth bless you.

People: Amen.

Leader: May God the Son, who bought us for God from every tribe and

language and people and nation, bless you.

People: Amen.

Leader: May God the Holy Spirit, who keeps us together in unity, bless you.

People: Amen.

Leader: Let Christ rule in your hearts, to whom indeed you were called in the

one body. Go in the name, the power and the protection of Christ

Jesus our Lord!

People: Thanks be to God.

Recessional Medley

I have decided to follow Jesus,

I have decided to follow Jesus,

I have decided to follow Jesus--

no turning back, no turning back.

The world behind me, the cross before me,

the world behind me, the cross before me,

the world behind me, the cross before me--

no turning back, no turning back.

Fire, fire, fire, fire fall on me

Fire, fire, fire, fire fall on me

Fire, fire, fire, fire fall on me

On the day of Pentecost, fire fall on me

On the day of Pentecost, fire fall on me

Fire, fire, fire, fire fall on me

O let the power fall on me my Lord,

Let the power fall on me:

O let the power from heaven fall on me,

Let the power fall on me.

Send us the promised Comforter O Christ,

Send the promised Comforter;

And may our hearts be filled with Love, O Christ,

When the Spirit comes like a dove.

For we want power to live as one, yes Lord,

We want power to live as one;

So as we pray and intercede for some,

May the Spirit make us one.

Give us the power here and now, O Christ,

Please for the power here and now;

Send us the power of Grace and Peace and Love,

Send us the power of Peace and Love.
