God loves usand has a greatplan for our lifebecause we arechildren of Godwhile Satan hasa destructionplan for our lifebecause hehates us.Satan opposesthe truth of thedeath of Christand he snatchesthe Word of Godfrom us

Our fight is not against flesh and blood butagainst spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12), Butthe devil is not fighting as a person against us.He uses human beings and our minds as toolsfor fighting against us.

God loves us and has a great plan for ourlife because we are children of God while Satanhas a destruction plan for our life because hehates us. Satan opposes the truth of the deathof Christ (Matthew 16:21-24) and he snatchesthe Word of God from us (Matthew 4:15). Heattacks faith of children of God especially ofyouth (Luke 22:31-32) and he tempts childrenof God to compromise in the matter of theirdedication (Acts 5:2) anddoctrines. We hearnumerous preachers, preaching about a futurewithout judgment, aChrist without cross, aHoly Spirit withoutholiness, forgivenesswithout confession, righteousness withoutobedience, love withoutsacrifice, glory withoutsuffering, crown of glory without crown of thorns, deliverance, prosperity, healing-here-now .Satan persecutes real servants of Christ(Revelation 2:10)

We may step into the trap of Satan if weare not careful and unaware of his plans. He isnot a roaring lion when he comes to catch hisprey but moving slowly like a cat to catch hisprey. His first target is our mind and he comesusing different disguises and different names. There is a statue in Vatican showing Satan asa handsome young man speaking with Eve atthe Garden of Eden. It is not Biblical but it givesa picture how Satan attracts his victim. Histarget is our minds. He explains that sin whichgives pleasure is good for us, giving the lameexcuse that everybody does it. His intention isto make our effectiveness for our Lord minimized

Spiritual Warfare!"Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of thedevil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against

powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts ofwickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:11,12)

and to cause us shame at the end in public.Satan is not omnipresent but he has lakhs ofevil spirits to serve him. The evil spirits observeour habits, weaknesses, secret life, daily habits. They put traps like secret passion for flesh, desire for higher position, greed for money andbegin to inject THOUGHTS IN OUR MINDS towork through our weakness and the sin that soeasily entangles us. Each person has deeplyrooted sinful nature, moral impurity, bitterness, pride, jealousy, hatred, lust for position andgreed for money. Satan disguises the sins offlesh with their attractiveness. Victim will bepreoccupied with these thoughts and behaviour

and be effectivelycontrolled by them.Mobile phones are goodtool for Satan to keep thevictims under his control. When evil spirits takecontrol of the victim, sinbegets in the heart andbecomes a liar (John8:44) to cover up his sinsand the victim begins todoubt the integrity of God

(Genesis 3:1) and sincerity of parents andministers. Victim starts to question the Wordof God and the intention of elders.

Satan’s weapons for destroying children ofGod are deception, lies, fear, dishonesty, immorality, lust, addiction, quest for wealth, desire for prosperity, pride, greed for positionetc. Satan incites people to commit sin andprovides all opportunities and environment tocommit sin and encourages them to commitsuicide or continue in their sinful life. He bringsdoctrinal division, hatred, false doctrines in thechurch through false prophets and falseteachers. They never preach holiness, separation from the world and worldly pleasuresbut show miracles and signs in the name ofdeliverance. (2 Thessalonians 2:9).

Our weapons are self control and seeing sins

We may step into the trap ofSatan if we are not careful and

unaware of his plans. He is not a roaring lion when he

comes to catch his preybut moving slowly like a cat to

catch his prey.

as enemy and not as friend (Galatians 5:23).As Satan can trap us even with one sin, remember to reject sinful suggestions from allsources and spend time in meditation of theword of God and in secret prayer. We ought tohave humility, love of God, submission to Godand be filled with power of the Holy Spirit.

If we are in the ministry of the Lord, Satanuses the weapons of discouragement, self pity, fear, greed, pride and desire for wealth, lust forillicit sex and position. He uses persecution fromoutside and inside and worries. Remember sinis habitual and not casual. Our mind is the besttool for the devil to use against our spiritual life.Since mind is the command centre, it controlsthoughts and imaginations.

Satan destroys relationship betweenhusband and wife (Ephesians 5:21-33) betweenchildren and parents (Ephesians 6:1-4) andworkers and masters (Ephesians 6:5-9). Weare soldiers and our Lord Jesus Christ is ourcommander and our duty is to keep our fortswearing armours of God (Ephesians 6:13-17)and obey the orders ofthe commander andfollow Him.

Let us learn whatour positions are so asto keep them to defeatSatan and his forces.

1) We areSELECTED in Christ tobe holy and blameless(Ephesians 1:14). Weshould continue to be holy and separated fromwicked world, lust of the flesh, lust of eyes andpride of life (1 John 2:16-18)

2) We are REDEEMED by the blood ofJesus Christ (Ephesians 1:7). Our value is highbecause we are purchased by blood of JesusChrist. We are not ordinary but of high statusand our life style and conversation must bebefitting our status. To cite a real life exmple:When Alexander was a boy he was once playingwith street boys in the street. His father, KingPhilip, called him and asked him three questionsa) who are you? b) What are you doing? and c)what would you become? These questionschanged the life and attitude of Alexander andhe never went back to play with street boys.He grew up like a prince and became anEmperor, ’Alexander the Great’. All children ofGod should ask these questions themselvesand move on accordingly

3) We are SEALED with the Holy Spirit ofpromise (Ephesians 1:13) When we are filledwith Holy Spirit there is a promise that we willbe taken when our Lord appears (1Thessalonians 4:16-18). When any item issealed, the content is pure and unadulterated. For example, we see the inscription on medicinebottles that if seal is broken do not buy itbecause its purity is not guaranteed. We areexpected to keep purity as long as we followour Master

4) We are SEATED in heavenly place(Ephesians 2:6) and therefore our talks, thoughts and deeds must be heavenly(Colossians 3:1-3). During the FrenchRevolution all members of the Emperor Louis’family were killed except the prince, a smallboy. Leaders who led the revolution believed thatif the child prince died, he would go to heavenaccording to Catholic faith and they did not wantto send the prince to heaven but to hell. Sothey sent the prince to the home of an immoralwoman with instructions to teach him all

obscene words andcorrupt his mind. Butwhenever the womanasked the boy torepeat a bad word hewould respond that asa prince he wouldnever use an obsceneword. Eventually thewoman sent princeback and they killed

him, too. As children of God we must be modelto others in our conversation and life style.

5) We are STRENGTHENED by the powerof Holy Spirit (Ephesians 3:16). We are notweak and cowardly because we arestrengthened by mighty power of Holy Spirit. We should be bold to face any problem and beready to face persecution and even death. Noturning back but strive forward. Remember thewords of Tertullian: “blood of martyr is seed ofthe church”.

We must keep our positions and obey theorders of our commander, Jesus Christ to defeatthe spiritual forces.

We should walk in unity (Ephesians 4:1-16),in purity ( Ephesians 4:17), in love (Ephesians5:1-2), in light (Ephesians 5:3-14) and inharmony (Ephesians 5:5-6:9).

Victory is ours because our commander isVICTOR!

We are SELECTED in ChristWe are REDEEMED by the blood of

Jesus ChristWe are SEALED with the Holy SpiritWe are SEATED in heavenly place

We are STRENGTHENED by the powerof Holy Spirit

3.2 Church as a Communion ofLove (1 John 3)

As we consider the causes of dysfunctionalrelationships in the church, the writing of ApostleJohn catches our attention. John specificallywrites about the manner of relationship that thebelievers must cherish among themselves. Thefollowing discussion will help us to understandthe seriousness of Christian relationship withintheir own community.

Love, Murder and Hatred

The major theme of Apostle John in all hiswriting is the love relationship of the membersof Christ’s body. Without any speculation, Johnmakes it very clear that the members of thebody of Jesus Christ must love one another. However, one of the saddest things in thechurches today is that members often fail tolove each other and consequently therelationship is thwarted in the church. Peopledo not get along with each other and they livewith hatred. According to John this hatred isequal to murder. In explaining this theme,Apostle John brings out two instances wherethere is absence of love in the life of themembers of the body of Christ; firstly in thecontext of murder and secondly in the contextof hatred.

Firstly, in order to describe his argument,John picks up the famous story of Cain andAbel from the Old Testament. According to John, the members of the body of Christ should “notbe like Cain, who belonged to the evil one andmurdered his brother” (1 John 3:12). From thisargument, it should be obvious to everyone thatthere can be no love where there is murder.

Murder is the exact opposite of love. One can understand exactly what John says

about Cain by asking three questions. Firstlywho was Cain’s family? His parents were Adamand Eve and his brother was Abel. In otherwords, he was part of the first human family. But more than that, he belonged to a spiritualfamily also. That means in v. 12 John says thatCain “belonged to the evil one”. In v. 10 Johnargues that “This is how we know who thechildren of God are and who the children of thedevil are. Anyone who does not do what is rightis not a child of God. Nor is anyone who doesnot love his brother”. That means there are twodistinct spiritual families: the family of God andthe family of Satan. Cain belonged to the familyof Satan. Therefore, Cain has the attitude ofthe devil, which is murder, hatred, evil andenmity. Secondly, what did Cain actually do?In v. 12 John argues that he “murdered hisbrother”. In the Greek language the word for“murder” is vivid and grisly. The word used byJohn expresses the gruesomeness, undeservedfate, criminal act, passion and atrocity of theact. It is the same word used to describe thecutting of an animal’s throat for sacrifice. Hence, when Cain killed his brother it was a brutal andviolent and even vicious murder. Thirdly, whydid Cain murder his brother? According to John,Cain murdered Abel “Because his own actionswere evil and his brother’s were righteous”(1 John 3:12). Cain could not stand it that hisbrother was more holy than he was. Cain couldnot stand it that his brother had a closer walkwith God than he did. Cain could not stand itthat his brother loved the Lord and served theLord. Cain could not stand it that his brother’sheart was in the right place. In this light we caninfer that Cain and Abel had a disagreementabout religion and this disagreement led to

John makes itvery clear thatthe members ofthe body ofJesus Christmust love oneanother. However, one ofthe saddestthings in thechurches todayis that membersoften fail to loveeach other andconsequently therelationship isthwarted in thechurch.According toJohn this hatredis equal tomurder.

Dysfunctional Relationshipin the Church - Part 2

In Part 1 of this article, Rev. Dr. Wilson Varkey explained howthe church should function as a body:

a) Every believer is part of one unit, b) Every Believer is Placed by Godc) Every Believer Plays an Important Role d) Every Member should Promote Unity

e) Every Member should Practice Mutual Care(Part 1 was published in the July issue and is available on our website:

suvarthamagazine.org)

Rev. Dr. WilsonVarkey Ph.D

Page 8: Suvartha Sep 2020

September 2020 Suvartha6

murder. This should not surprise us becausethis is what is happening in our churches also. The aspect of love has flown away from ourchurches and the members become murderersaccording to John.

Secondly, John argues that where there ishatred, there is no love. One should understandthe emphasis that John makes when saying“anyone who hates his brother is a murderer”(1 John 3:15). As it was already noted, Johnequates hate with murder. Therefore, hate isthe exact opposite of love like murder. Thatmeans love cannot exist where there is hatred.Perhaps someone may ask what the differencebetween actual murder and hate is. In myopinion, the only difference is the outward deed. The inner intention is the same in both thecases. If the right circumstance is given and ifthe person is under the right pressure and hashate in his heart, he can easily be guilty ofmurder.

Here the original meaning of the word willhelp us to understand this further. According toWebster’s English dictionary, hate is “a feelingof extreme hostility or extreme dislike ofanother”. That suffices as far as the definitionis concerned. Everyone knows this feeling, thisdislike, this aversion to someone; a sense ofextreme hostility toward another. It can beexpressed in two different ways. It can beactive, in that someone indulges in malicioustalk or injurious actions towards the other. Themethodology adopted could be to strike them,or beat them, or mistreat them in some way. Itcan be attacking, slandering behind their back. All these are active expressions of hate andperhaps most of us think of hate only in thissense. But hate can also be expressedpassively and still be hate. It can be expressedby indifference, by coldness, by isolation, byexclusion, and unconcern for another. Whenanalysing the churches today, in my opinionboth active and passive hate could be seen inthe body of Christ.

In concluding his thesis, John argues thathatred is due to the fact that there is no genuineconversion in that person. That’s why he writesthat “Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal lifein him” (1 John 3:15). This is one of the mostimportant reason for dysfunctional churchestoday. That means real conversion has nottaken place in the lives of the members of thebody of Christ. As a result, we come across

dysfunctional churches everywhere.

4. Recommendations for Churches

In the backdrop of the previous discussions, there are so many things that the church needsto consider in order to make the church fullyfunctional in the area of relationship. I do notclaim that I have any readymade answers tothe relational struggle that we face in ourcommunities. However, we cannot leave thisissue unaddressed rather we need to discusssome of the possibilities that would make thechurches to function well today. In that venture,I am trying to present some theoreticalsuggestions to help us as a whole in the hopethat those tips will be helpful to our churches.

a. Abolish Distinctions of any Kind

In our attempt to solve the dysfunctionalrelationship in our churches, the first thing thateveryone needs to consider is abolishingdistinctions between the members in any kind.Apostle Paul talks about this in detail in thebook of Galatians 3:28. The argument of Paulshould prompt the churches to eliminate classas a distinction between people in the church. There is no doubt that such practices are seenin our churches very openly and that is noted inmany ways. Firstly, there is class based uponbackground. It is very common that all racesand cultures presume that their background isbetter than other races or cultures. In fact, Paulwarns against such presumptions by arguingthat “There is neither Jew nor Greek…” It maybe assumed that the Jews having a covenantwith God were superior to the Greeks who hadno such covenant. But in the church none ofthat matters. Everyone should be treatedequal.Secondly, there are distinctions made byeconomics. In my observation such kinds ofdistinctions are quite common in our churches. Therefore Paul argues that no member of thechurch should be despised or treated unfairlyfor any reason. Thirdly, there are genderinequalities. I should say that knowingly orunknowingly there is a practice of ignoring thewomen in our communities. That’s why Paulreminds the church that we are all one in Christ. In my opinion, the church must expect ameasure of diversity. In Christ there is room foreveryone and there is a place for all of itsmembers in the body of Christ.

There are somany things

that the churchneeds to

consider in orderto make thechurch fully

functionalin the area ofrelationship.We cannot

leave this issueunaddressed

rather we needto discuss

some of thepossibilities thatwould make the

churches tofunction well

today.

Page 9: Suvartha Sep 2020

b. Eliminate Factions of any Kind

In my observation, there is one thing that Ihave always noted and that is, when conflictsarise, people seem to group themselves aroundpersonalities in those conflicts. In fact, this hasbeen the situation in Corinthian church also aswe see in 1 Corinthians 1:1-31. People findissues and that become rallying points forconflict though the real causes may not beobvious most of the time. In fact, among otherproblems behind the conflicts in the church atCorinth, there was dysfunctional loverelationship as we read it in chapter 5. Anotherissue behind these personality conflicts wasan economic issue connected with the lawsuits in chapter 6. There were also personalityconflicts because of class prejudice as we seein 11:17ff. The end result of all these was thebody of Christ was broken into different pieces. Therefore, Paul strongly argues in I Corinthians1 to move toward unity and mutual humilityinstead of catering to groups and dividing thebody of Christ. The same should be followed inour churches to have our churches functionproperly in terms of relationship and fellowship.

c. Instruct the Values of Church

In my opinion, one of the ways to deal withthe issue of dysfunctional relationship in thechurch is to instruct the values of church to itsmembers. I have the opinion that many have noidea what the church and its values are. To acertain extent, this leads into fights and disunityin the church. Therefore, we must instruct thechurch its values regularly and convey that theexpectation for everyone in the church is thesame. The leadership should teach the core ofvalues that consider every person as a uniqueexpression of God’s will and image. And themembers should know that in the church theyare not competitors rather co-operators.Moreover, the church must teach its membersthat all of them are image bearers of God. Thatmeans every individual is created in the imageof God and their life and contribution has valueto God. When that image is fallen and corruptedby sin, it is nevertheless God’s. That has to bevery strongly taught and emphasized in thechurch. In addition to that, the members of thechurch should know that every individual is"fearfully and wonderfully made" by God(Psalms 139:14). While the process of

formation takes place, in the womb and inchildhood very obviously, God is not finishedwith that person yet. Therefore all Christiansmust take their responsibility and work with Godso far as possible to realize that He isaccomplishing His purpose for every individual. That would definitely help the members of thebody of Christ to treat everyone in respect andthe relationship in the church will be better.

d. Put Christ and His Will First

Throughout this discussion, I have outlinedmany issues as reasons for dysfunctionalrelationships and conflicts in the churches.Perhaps, those issues could be seen as veryimportant issues at least on the surface. However, as a final word, I am forced to arguethat whatever the immediate problem is, the realcause of the relational issue in the churches isbasically a failure to put Jesus Christ and Hiswill first. That’s why there are instances wherea person or a small group of people try to controleverything that takes place, instead of seekingGod’s will or being sensitive to the concerns ofothers. We have to sadly admit the fact thatthey have forgotten the Bible’s command to“serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13).When the members of the body of Christ puton Christ and His will first, the church willbecome healthy and united for the same goal.

5. Conclusion

As I conclude this argument, may I quote aprinciple that Apostle Paul writes to theColossian church. In ch. 3:12-14, we read,“Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy anddearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.Bear with each other and forgive whatevergrievances you may have against one another.Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over allthese virtues put on love, which binds them alltogether in perfect unity". This is the ultimaterequirement that we must model our behaviorafter our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God’scompassion, kindness, humility, gentlenessand patience give us direction on how we needto respond and treat each other. If we do this,we are saved by God’s grace and united in Hislove as brothers and sisters in Christ. Churcheswill function very well and there will not bedivisions and conflicts within the church.

The real causeof the relationalissue in thechurches isbasically afailure to putJesus Christand His will first. That’s why thereare instanceswhere a personor a small groupof people try tocontroleverything thattakes place, instead ofseeking God’swill or beingsensitive to theconcerns ofothers. Whenthe members ofthe body ofChrist put onChrist and Hiswill first, thechurch willbecome healthyand united forthe same goal.

Just as the Oldestament foretold the

first coming of Jesusthrough the prophets,Apostle Paul clearlystates that JesusChrist Himself iscoming back thesecond time. Thefollowing observationscan be made aboutthe above verses:

* This is amessage of comfortfor born-again believers today.

* This event could happen at any time in thenear future.

* Christ is coming down from heaven for Hisbride - the church.

* The church will be escorted by Christ toheaven after this event.

The exact order of events at Christ’s comingis given for our benefit. It will begin with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with thetrumpet of God. Some Bible scholars feel thatthe shout is the voice of the Lord Jesus Himselfwhich raises the dead (John 5:25; 11:43, 44).The voice of an archangel may be to summonthe angels as a military escort to accompanythe Lord and His saints through enemy territoryback to heaven (Luke 16:22). The trumpet ofGod is the same as the last trumpet(1 Corinthians 15:52) that calls the saints totheir eternal blessing.

so this is a triumphalgathering in opendefiance of the devilright in his ownstronghold. Thebodies of the dead inChrist will rise first. Then the livingrighteous believers willbe caught up togetherwith them in theclouds to meet theLord Jesus in mid air. This event is also

described by the word “Rapture” (a snatchingaway).

The Rapture is thus the first phase of Christ’sreturn, involving every righteous Christian aliveat that time, as they will be caught up to meetChrist in the clouds instantaneously receivingglorified bodies. All those who have died “inChrist” will be resurrected as well. Then, weshall be forever with the Lord! What a glorious‘blessed hope’ we have, so let us comfort oneanother with this truth. Let us seriously prepareourselves for this great event, for Jesus is comingsooner than we anticipate!

Jesus lovingly, patiently, mercifullyrestores Peter.Jesus asksPeter threetimes, "do youlove me" andPeter confessesthree times hislove for hismaster - threedenials, threeconfessions

Peter During the Passion Week.

Jesus sent Peter and John to prepare forthe Passover meal (Matthew 26:17-19; Mark14:12-16; Luke 22:7-13). We see theconversation between Peter and Jesus aboutJesus washing Peter’s feet (John 13:2-12), andPeter beckoning John to ask Jesus who thebetrayer is (John 13;23,24). Jesus said only toPeter, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan haddemanded permission to sift you like wheat;but I have prayed for you, that your faith maynot fail; and you, once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:32). We seePeter’s overconfidence when Jesus warns Peterthat he will deny Jesus (Matthew 26:33-35;Mark 14:29-31; Luke 22:31-34; John 13:37-38).In the Garden of Gethsemane Peter slept(Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46; John 18:1). In his fleshly zeal to protectJesus, Peter takes his sword and Jesusrebukes him (Matthew 26:51; Mark 14:47; Luke22;50; John 18:10,11). Peter is the only disciplethat verbally denied Jesus, even though all ofthem ran away (Matthew 26:56, 69-75; Mark14:50, 66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:15-18,25-27). We see the look of Jesus and Peter’sbitter weeping; Oh! What repentance!! (Matthew26:75; Luke 22:61, 62).

Peter entered into the empty tomb (John20:6). Peter runs to the tomb of Jesus alongwith John, after hearing the report from MaryMagdalene (Mark 16:7; Luke 24:7; John

20:1-10). Peter tells his friends that he is goingfishing and he is a leader, others went with him,and they caught nothing that night, but Jesusmeets them and makes breakfast for them (John21:1-14). Jesus lovingly, patientlyrestores Peter. Jesus asks Peter three times,"do you love me" and Peter confesses threetimes his love for his master - three denials, three confessions (we will not go into the depthsof this conversation in this article) (John 21:15-19). Jesus once again invites Peter with thesame invitation, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:18,19;Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:1-11). It is Peter that stoodup in that group of one hundred and twenty afterthe ascension of Christ and said that it isnecessary that one of the men who has beenwith us must become a witness of Christ’sresurrection, and they drew lots, and it fell toMatthias and he was added to the apostles(Acts 1:15-26).

Peter on the Day of Pentecost and After.

On that historical day of the church, fiftydays after the crucifiction of our Lord, on theday of the Jewish feast of Pentecost, God usesPeter to preach the inaugural sermon of thechurch. Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit’s powerand boldness, took his stand along with thetwelve (Acts 2;14-40). Peter and John are usedby God for the healing of the lame man, thefirst apostolic miracle, and Peter’s secondsermon (Acts 3:11-26). The persecution againstthe church begins in Acts 3:1-4:21. Next wesee Peter when God judges Ananias andSapphira (Acts 5:1-12). God performs signs,

wonders, and miracles by the hands of Peterand other apostles, he is put in jail and beforethe Sanhedrin, and goes away rejoicing for theywere considered worthy to suffer shame forChrist (Acts 5:12-42).

Other Apostles sent Peter and John toSamaria, they laid hands on the believers thereand they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17). The Holy Spirit exposes through Peter thewicked heart of a man named Simon (Acts 8;18-24). God heals Aeneas, a paralised man inLydda through the ministry of Peter (Acts 9:32-35). God raises Dorcas from the dead throughthe prayer of Peter (Acts 9:36-43). God preparesand commissions Peter to preach the Gospelto Cornelius and he brings the Gospel togentiles (Acts 10:1-48). Peter explains to thebelievers in Jerusalem, as they took issue withhim about his association with gentiles, andtogether they glorified God (Acts 11:1-18). WhenPeter is in prison for preaching Christ, thechurch prays for him, and God delivers him.Peter goes to another place, then goes downfrom Judea to Caesarea (Acts 12:1-19). At lastwe see Peter in the Acts of the Apostles at thevery important church council as he preachesthe heart of God toward Jews and Gentilesbringing salvation by His grace to all. We donot know much about Peter after this, exceptthat he visited Antioch in Syria, and there apostlePaul rebukes Peter concerning hisinconsistency (Galatians 2:7-21). God usesPeter among the Jews, Gentiles, and thechurches. The Apostle Paul says that Peter isa pillar of the church along with James and John(Galatians 2:9).

Peter and Prayer

Prayer is Adoration of God. Prayer isConfession of who God is, as well as confessionof our sins and shortcomings. Prayer is alsoThanksgiving as well as Supplication. (An easyway to remember this is to note the first letterof each of these and we get ACTS). It iscommunication and interaction with God. Wesee a lot of Peter’s interaction andcommunication with God the Son. After a nightof catching nothing Peter and his friends werewashing their nets when Jesus came. He askedthem to put out their net into the deep waterand they caught a large quantity of fish. ThenPeter fell at Jesus’ feet and prayed, “Go awayfrom me Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke

5:1-8). When Peter and the other disciples knewthat it was Jesus that was walking on water,Peter prayed to Jesus to command Peter tocome to Him on the water, and Jesus said,"come". When Peter got frightened and beganto sink, he prayed, “Lord, save me” (Matthew14:22-30). At the Mount of Transfiguration wesee Peter communicating with Jesus (Matthew17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:27-36). Peter is partof many prayer meetings in Acts (Acts 1,2,3,4,).Some received healing, some received the HolySpirit, Dorcus or Tabatha rose from the deadthrough the prayers of Peter (Acts 8:14-16;9:32-40).

Peter went up to pray about the sixth hourand had a vision about bringing the Gospel tothe gentiles (Acts 10:9-23). Peter was deliveredfrom jail because of the fervent prayers of thechurch (Acts 12:1-19). Peter admonishes hisreaders not to do anything that will hinder prayerlife, and be sober in prayer (1 Peter 3:7; 4:7).Peter begins and ends his letters with prayerand benediction (1 Peter 1:1-3; 5:14; 2 Peter1:1, 2; 3:18). Peter knew very well the priorityof prayer.

The Death of Peter and his beloved Wife.

According to Origen of Alexandria, churchtradition says that Peter was in prison in Romewith his wife and was crucified during the timeof emperor Nero, some time between AD 64and 68. He asked to be crucified upside downbecause he was not worthy to be crucified withhis head upward like his Lord. The Emperormartyred Peter’s wife before him and Peterstood by her repeating, “Remember our Lord,Remember our Lord”.

Peter’s Letters.

Besides all the words and deeds of Peterthat we have in the four Gospels and The Actsof the Apostles, God inspired him to write twoletters to God’s people. God willing, we willstudy these precious words of God by the helpof the Holy Spirit in the coming months.

May the Lord Jesus Christ who transformedPeter continue to transform every one of us intothe glorious image of His Son and our LordJesus Christ. Let us yield to the Holy Spirit andmay God use everyone of us to impact lives foreternity.

Apostle John says that we have anAdvocate before God in Jesus Christ(1 John 2:1-2). An Advocate (or Lawyer)is one who upholds the law , andensures that not even the poorestperson is deprived of theirconstitutional and human rights.

Let us examine the case of Job.Job was the wealthiest man of his time, with enormous material possessionsand 10 children (Job 1:2-3). However, during a “court-like” scenario before thethrone of God, Satan proposes that Jobfears God only because of God’sprotection towards him and suggestsa trial of his faith (Job 1:6-12).Consequently, Job loses everything.Yet, as Job refuses to sin against God,God commends him at a second“court” scenario, even stating thatSatan incited Him against Job withoutcause (emphasis added) (Job2:1-3). Considering hisintegrity, God later goes on todouble Job’s material wealth, and bless him with another 10children (Job 42:10, 12-13). Wemay say that Job was a manwho was blameless andupright, who feared God andshunned evil (Job 1:1), andtherefore far different from us.

Perhaps our condition is more akinto Joshua, son of Jozadak, who waschosen to be the High Priest at thetime of the Israelites’ return fromBabylonian captivity andreconstruction of the temple atJerusalem. In the third chapter of theBook of Zechariah, we see another

Jesus – our Advocate"My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have anAdvocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins,

and not for ours only but also for the whole world" (1 John 2:1-2)

heavenly courtroom scene, whereSatan, the accuser of the brethren(Revelation 12:10), stands inopposition to the Angel of the Lord(Zechariah 3:1). Contrastingly to Job,Joshua gives Satan ample reasons toaccuse and slander him (Zechariah 3:3)

– as do we. Here was a man called tobe a High Priest – as we are called tobe priests and kings (Revelation 1:6)– clearly being negligent of his duties.Mercifully, a command is given to takeaway the filthy garments from Joshuaand clothe him in rich robes and aclean turban instead (Zechariah

3:4-5). Similarly, we too are justifiedonly by Jesus’s blood, through faith.

We know that the Angel seen byZechariah in this vision and the livingRedeemer declared by Job (Job 19:25)are none other than the Lord JesusChrist Himself. While the Lord couldnever find a suitable human to standin the gap to intercede (Ezekiel 22:30),Jesus has an unchangeablepriesthood and ever lives to makeintercession for those who come toGod through Him (Hebrews 7:24-25).Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice ofgiving up His life in order to providehumanity with a means of salvationfrom eternal damnation.

At the time we accepted JesusChrist as the Lord and Saviour of ourlives, we were given clean garmentsto wear (Justification) . We are

expected to live a holy life aslong as we live (Sanctification),with the hope that one day ourmortal bodies will also be raised/ transformed (Glorification). However, in our sojourn upon theearth, we often soil our cleangarments – much like childrenwho dirty their white clotheswhile playing. Yet, as a personwearing rose - tinted glasses

always views the world as pleasant, when we confess our sins, God viewsus through the blood of Jesus coveringus and forgives us, making us wholeagain.

Let us meditate upon His Worddaily and strive to keep our ways clean(Psalms 119:9).

Jesus has an unchangeable priesthoodand ever lives to make intercession

for those who come to God through Him(Hebrews 7:24-25). Jesus paid the ultimate

sacrifice of giving up His life in order toprovide humanity with a means of salvation

from eternal damnation.

"How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. ----- Your word I havehidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You" (Psalms 119:9,11)

"But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also able to saveto the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them"

(Hebrews 7:24-25)

Most of us have something forwhich we are waiting on God. In theverse referenced above, the prophetHabakkuk tells us to wait for ouranswers. Though it may linger, theywill come at the appointed time. Youmay be asking, how long do I need towait? Abraham and Sarah waited for25 years for their promised son Isaac.Hannah cried for years to conceiveSamuel. Jospeh waited tirelessly tosee God’s promises to himcome true. So in responseto your question, I wouldsay wait until you receiveyour answer and while youwait pray tirelessly andrelentlessly!

I was born and bought upin a Hindu family. Growingup, my only exposure toJesus was as a manhanging on a cross. There seemed tobe nothing great or powerful about Him.However things began to change atnursing school when I was re-introduced to Jesus. I joined a choirat the chapel in the hospital tofulfill my love for music while Iwas studying for nursing. Duringthe week, I often found myselfsitting in the chapel all by myselftalking to Jesus about my everyday problems. These momentsbrought me what I now know as“a peace that passes allunderstanding”. Here began myjourney in understanding thepower in Jesus’ name. I startedto understand who Jesus wasand now when I prayed, I addedJesus to all my other Hindudeities, because no one told methat Jesus is the only one and

true God, at that time.I got married within the Hindu

customs to a Hindu man. Aftermarriage, we moved to Bahrain and afew friends shared the gospel with me.After a long journey filled with internalconflict related to having to let go ofthe gods I grew up with and friendstestifying and reading the Bible, I wasconvinced that Jesus was the only GodI wanted to follow. From then on I held

this verse close to my heart:“Salvation is found in no one else, forthere is no other name under heavengiven to mankind by which we mustbe saved” (Acts 4:12). My husband,

on the other hand, was not convinced. However he had no objections for meand the children going to church.

I had a deep desire to see myhusband to join me on this newtransformational journey. Little did Iknow then, that I would have to waitfor 26 years to see this desire fulfilledin its entirety. Over the years, I usedevery opportunity I had to share withhim my faith, to convince him about

this wonderful God I wasserving. And while now I knowthat all those conversationsplanted seeds within hisheart, then it seemed likewords falling on deaf ears.Earlier in my faith, I foundmyself having to go to churchall alone with my youngchildren. I longed for him tocome to church. I spent time

in fasting and prayer for histransformation. I remember one day inutter frustration I cried out to God, “howlong, oh God"?! As I read the dailydevotion that day, His response was

clear. The devotion talked abouta rose. If you try to force openup a rose bud, it doesn’t havethe same beauty as a rose thatblooms on its own at the giventime. I understood that God hadHis own plan for my husbandand that it was more beautifulthan I could ask or imagine.

Over the years, life boughtour family multiple challengesand difficult times; I knew God’shand was upon me throughoutthe time. He gave me thewisdom to build a strongmarriage despite the differencesin our faith. God taught me to

honor Him without dishonoring myhusband. Although my husband and Iweren’t on the same page about ourfaith, he would sit with me duringprayer. He saw my heart for God andthe miracles of God in our lives.Isensed God soften my husbands hearttowards God. Eventually, after wemoved to the US in 2005, he startedbelieving that Jesus was the one trueGod. However, he still didn’t want tocome with us to the churchwe were attending (IndiaChristian Assembly, NewYork) or be baptized.

The ten years after mymove to the US were likelythe hardest years of my life.Although my husband and Ihad a great marriage andpartnership, I longed to seethe promise of God come to pass.Every Sunday, church picnic, conference etc. served as a reminderof this unanswered prayer. SomeSundays I would be full of hope, othersI felt the weight of unbearableloneliness and pain. I often felt likeAbraham or Hannah, crying to God foran answer to my prayer. But all I heardwas silence…

Then in 2016, God responded tomy cry. Our church moved its location

closer to our house and my husbanddecided to attend the first service. Hehas attended every service since then.I don’t know what changed his mind orwhy he decided to go, but I know Godhad a hand in it. Over the next 4 years,I saw my husband grow in faith andlove for God. Now I only had oneoutstanding prayer. I wanted to see myhusband baptized. One evening, during the pandemic, towards the end

of May, my husband turned to me andsaid; “I think I may need to do thissooner”. Puzzled by the statement, Iprobed for clarification. He explainedto me that on January 1st, he haddecided to take up reading the entireBible within the year and had decidedin his heart that he would get baptizedafter finishing the reading. As thepandemic hit the nation, he foundhimself having more time to read theWord and as a result finished reading

the Bible in 5 months. Words will neverdescribe the elation I felt in thatmoment. My long 26 years wait wasover. On June 13, 2020, my husbandgot baptized in the presence of hisfamily and loved ones. In that moment,I didn’t remember 26 years and all thepain. It was all worth it to see God’swork come to pass.

corner

R o n n i e was a 12-yea r o ld boy who w a s e n j o y i n g his Sunday S c h o o l c l a s s where the teacher Mr.

Tom was teaching the Creation story from the Bible. He had heard the Creation story so many times before. Yet it was different this time because his teacher had taken the class on a 'Nature walk' one sunny Saturday morning. They were all enjoying the sights and sounds of nature around them and learning about God’s Creation.

The trees along the walk gave them shade from the mid-day sun. Mr. Tom reminded the students how God gave us huge trees to protect us from the heat of the sun. This allowed them to enjoy both the sun and the shade at the same time. Ronnie mentioned to the group about how he had seen a rainbow in the sky, the day before. Mr. Tom reminded the students that rainbow is a beautiful reminder of the promise that God made with Noah that He will never again send flood to destroy the world.

Mr. Tom asked the class if they could tell of another example where a rainbow of colors could be seen. Ronnie’s friend Micah answered that when white light enters a prism, different wavelengths in the white light come out of the prism as a band of rainbow colors. Mr. Tom agreed that violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red together make white light. He said it also reminded him of Trinity - where God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are one God. Creation is one of the wavelengths in which God the Father is revealed. Dying on the cross for yours and my salvation is one of the wavelengths which reveals God the Son. Being a Comforter for a believer is one of the wavelengths where God the Holy Spirit is revealed. Building a place in heaven for

believers is another wave length where God the Son is revealed. In Romans 8:26, we read of another wavelength where when we do not know how to pray, God the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with unspoken groaning.

Then Ronnie asked if the Bible said anything about creation of dinosaurs or their extinction. Mr. Tom replied that Bible talks about behemoth and leviathan in Job chs 40 and 41. In Job 40:15, God asks Job to look at Behemoth, which He made. It feeds on grass like an ox. It had a lot of strength and power with its bones being “tubes of bronze”, limbs like “rods of iron” and tail that sways like a cedar. The behemoth could be apatosaurus dinosaur. In Job 40:19 it reads that the behemoth “ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword”. So God created the behemoth and He made it disappear when it was His time to do so. Job could not even hunt these creatures.

In conclusion, Mr. Tom asked his students to look at nature around them and be reminded that God is powerful and always in control. God is worthy of our worship, our adoration and all our praises.
