A SPECIALTRADITION

OFTWO GIFTS

At SVC, every incoming student

receives the gift of a thought-

provoking book. Open it

and you’ll see it’s signed

by every member of the

SVC community, includ-

ing staff, faculty and

administration. When

you graduate, you’ll receive

another book—also signed by every member

of the campus community. >ese are the bookends of

your SVC education.

LOCATION,

LOCATION, LOCATION

SVC might be in one of

the best locations in the

nation—in the mountains,

in southwesternVermont,

close to other colleges, in a

lively college town, and just a

few hours’ drive from several

major cities: Albany (less than

an hour away), and Boston,

NewYork City and Montreal,

all just three hours away.

HOME SWEET HOME

MANY OF OUR CLASSES ARE HELD INTHE EVERETT

MANSION, AWONDERFUL SPRAWLING MANSION BUILT IN

THE EARLY 1900s FROMVERMONT GOLDSTONE.

PRACTICAL!

Edward Everett, the American industrialist who built the

mansion that houses SVC today, was the maker of the very

practical “Lightning” fruit jar (among many other things)

—a breakthrough in food storage at a time when there were

no refrigerators, supermarkets or zip lock bags.

OPTIONS

SVC offers 22 majors, 16 minors and more than 260 different

courses each year—more than enough to fill your schedule.

On the off chance that there’s something you want that we

don’t offer, SVC students can enroll in courses at nearby

colleges at no additional cost. Our reciprocity agreements

also allow other area students to enroll

in SVC’s classes.

MOOSE CROSSING

MEET MONTE,

SVC’S MASCOT.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Southern Vermont College

is one of the most affordable

private colleges around.

When you really look

at costs closely and

consider all the expenses,

we’re even competitive

with many public insti-

tutions. In addition,

a robust financial aid

program helps more than

80 percent of our students

fulfill their college dreams.

WE’RE ONA MISSION:TO HELP OURSTUDENTS SUCCEED,REACHTHEIR GOALSAND MAKEA DIFFERENCE.start

We believe a college education is the most important investment you make in your life—not onlyfinancially, but also in terms of hard work and time.We think the experience should reflect

that reality, that it should open doors for you, create new possibilities for your life, transformyou as a thinker, a leader and a citizen.

We believe in fun, too. Excitement, time for reflection and relaxation, sports, friendship andcommunity—these are essential to becoming a thoughtful, compassionate, educated person. Still,

learning must always come first—rich, deep and relevant learning that gives you the foundation youneed for a successful future.SO,WHAT DOESTHIS SMALL COLLEGE IN SOUTHERNVERMONT HAVETO OFFER AND IS ITTHE RIGHT PLACE FORYOU?

EVERYBODY KNOWSYOUR NAME

We believe that education ought to be personal—that you

should feel like you’re part of a close community. Here, you’ll

recognize people when you go to dinner. You’ll have friends

who are in classes other than your own. When you go to a

basketball game, you’ll know most of the people in the stands

and on the court.

MOOSE-A-PALOOZA!

In between studying management and criminal justice,

writing history papers or studying for bio exams, SVC

students take time out for fun. One of the most popular

campus traditions is Moose-a-palooza—a spring festival

of music, dance and fun!

“LIFE’S MOST PERSISTENTAND URGENTQUESTION IS:WHATAREYOU DOINGFOR OTHERS?”–Martin Luther King, Jr.

“In my class, we learned

about the challenges of

rural healthcare, then

brainstormed possible solu-

tions for our population. By

the end, I had new skills in

accounting, marketing and

research and a bunch of new

friends. Plus, it was great to

do something that had an

impact—it gave me a new

perspective on the value of

my education.”

NURSING EXCELLENCE

SVC’s Nursing students have

achieved an outstanding

National Council Licensure

Examination (NCLEX) pass

rate. In 2008, 100% of first-

time candidates passed.

maj rTHE LIBERAL ARTS. Why does it matter if you want to be a nurse or an entrepreneur orwork in criminal justice?

We believe that a liberal arts back-ground—the courses you take inhumanities, the arts, literature, his-tory and the sciences—transformsyou into a sophisticated thinker, aproblem-solver, a visionary, a leader. It makes you a better writer, asmarter speaker, a thoughtful teamplayer. It touches the compassion in your heart, inspires your courageand ignites your desire to make a difference. The liberal arts make us all more human—and moreinteresting human beings.

Let’s not forget, however, the real and serious demands of our com-plex world. We also want you to be practical—to develop valuable skillsand become a person who can make things happen.

Know what you want to do? Whoyou want to become? What if youtook it to the next step? WHY NOT ASPIRE…?

BUILD THE ENTERPRISE/

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Do you have an idea for a

business? Why not start it as

part of your college experi-

ence? Southern Vermont

College’s “Build the Enter-

prise” program guides

students in applying the

concepts learned in their

studies to creating and

running a business of their

own. Your enterprise could

be in retail, technology,

agriculture or health care.

If your proposal is strong

and has potential for success,

you could receive start-up

funding through SVC’s

Venture Fund. How’s that

for real world learning?

WRITING AWAY

We know that people struggle

with writing, but strengthen-

ing your writing skills may

be one of the best things you

can do for your career. Most

majors have communications

and writing components. At

SVC, you will be challenged

to write in all your courses. In

addition, we offer a variety of

writing-intensive courses and

majors—communications,

journalism and a very popular

creative writing program.

Extra help is always available

in our Success Center.

LEARN AND DO!

SVC is a liberal arts college

with a strong practical

orientation. Be prepared to

put what you’re learning to

work—in an office, a clinic,

an emergency room, a law

firm or a social service

agency. Crough intern-

ships, jobs, service learning

and projects, our students

gain real-world experience,

on-the-job training and

new perspectives.

“SVC’s experiential

learning approach will

allow students to see

how theory is applied, and

they will leave college with

‘real world experience’

that will allow them to

become more successful…

faster!”

–John Max Miller,SVC Class of ’83, Entrepreneur

“I teach psychology at SVC and one thing that psychologists

know is this: never say ‘I can’t’—even when the work is chal-

lenging. Too often, ‘I can’t’ is the first step towards failure. At

SVC, we want our students to exceed their own expectations.

4e more each of us expects of ourselves, the more we will

strive and succeed.”

–Scott Stein, Social Sciences

“I always tell my students to work hard and consistently rather

than cramming, to believe in yourself, and keep yourself healthy

and rested for optimal performance. I encourage them not to

be afraid to ask questions, to question what they do and why.

I remind them they are on a wonderful journey and that they

will always be learning new things.”

–Susan O. Sykas, Nursing

“What’s most interesting and rewarding to me as a teacher?

4e small class sizes and the personal interaction I enjoy with

my students—these allow me to see the personal and educa-

tional growth of each of my students.”

–Al Chapleau, Criminal Justice

“What’s most interesting or rewarding about teaching at SVC?

I especially like that every student is provided with individu-

alized support. At SVC every student has the opportunity to

become successful.”

–Sylvia L. Jimison, Success Center

“I try to open the world to my students, intellectually, politically

and socially—to help them understand that the whole world is

wide open to them. I try to help them to imagine a world of

great possibilities and to appreciate their own intelligence and

capabilities.”

ATHEMED LECTURE SERIES

We don’t all learn in boxes. What makes education useful is being

able to connect the dots. 0at’s the idea behind SVC’s annual

lecture series. Speakers from very diverse fields come to campus

and speak on the same theme: 0e Lessons of Leadership Series,

for example.

FROMTHETOP

From some of our classrooms, you can see the town of Bennington

below. 0e third largest town in Vermont, Bennington is filled

with interesting things to do—from movie theaters and museums

to clubs and eateries. SVC students also enjoy internships and

part-time jobs in the area medical center, clinics, courts, law offices,

and technology firms, and the surrounding area offers some of

Vermont’s best hiking, skiing, snowboarding and fly-fishing.

ROVING PROFESSORS

Change it up. Shift perspectives. 0ink in different ways. To help you figure out what this really means

and why it’s important, SVC selects a few “roving professors” who teach in a variety of courses for

short periods of time. Experts and scholars, they cross disciplines and bring new points of view,

lead projects and join you in discussion. A visiting pharmacology professor might drop in on nursing,

psychology or computer science classes, while an artist might engage students in mathematics,

photojournalism or history.

MOST UNDERGRADUATES INTHIS COUNTRY EXPERIENCE education from the back of a big lecture hall.Wethink about education differently at SouthernVermont College. Instead of large lecture-based courses, weoffer smaller classes, usually with an average of 16 students—large enough to have many interesting pointsof view, but still small enough so that you’ll know everyone fairly well by the end of the semester. We thinkeducation should be rooted in conversation, in back-and-forth, give-and-take.At SVC, when you have agood idea, people will notice. Professors recognize when you’re putting in the effort.

LEARNYOURWAY.We know that everyone learns differently. Some students do better holed up in thelibrary lost in thought, while others learn better if they can talk with friends. If you’re the kind of personwho does better when you are engaged, when you’re a more active and even hands-on participant, whenyou can get feedback quickly, we encourage you to call, email or plan to visit.LET’STALK!

THE SUITE LIFE

SVC students enjoy suite life in our residence halls. A Community Advisor helps out with any

residence life issues and acts as a big brother or sister. <e residence complexes also offer laundry

facilities, cable television service, in-room Internet access and 24-hour computer labs. New

students are required to live on campus; older students may eventually choose off-campus living.

AT EASE

What do SVC students do for fun? If you like your fun

organized, you can find all kinds of activities organized

by the residence halls, from movie nights to day trips.

SVC students are also just as likely to hang out in small

groups in each other’s rooms. If you like your fun on a

larger scale, check out the campus calendar for info on

trips to Boston to see the Red Sox, all-campus parties

and celebrations and special events.

GET ORGANIZED

With more than 20 clubs and

organizations on campus, you’ll

find the right match for you.

friends.

GET GAME

SVC offers 10 NCAA Division III teams and plays in the tough New England Collegiate Conference

—we even have a few championship trophies in our display cases. <at’s a lot of game for a small

college, and it doesn’t stop there. Many of our students describe themselves as athletic, but

even those who don’t play on a team can be found enjoying the fresh Vermont powder, racing

the trails on their mountain bikes and rock climbing and hiking in the Green Mountains.

AT SVC,WEVALUE PRACTICALITY.Education takes on richer meaningswhen you know how to use it tomake a difference. All the books youread here, the papers you write, theexams you study for will matter inthe real world.Your skills and knowl-edge won’t grow in a vacuum. You’llhave opportunities to play out whatyou know—in an internship or sum-mer job or a service learning project.

“I’m doing an internship at the Center for Restorative Justice in Bennington—working on the new website

and representing CRJ in various programs such as Tobacco-Free Community Partners. TFCP works to pre-

vent first-time tobacco use among young people. I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to create change in

society, and I can see that the insights I’ve gained here will be important in whatever career I choose.”

–Garrett O. Vogel, Midlothian, VA, Criminal Justice

INTERNSHIPS

we encourage students to undertake internships informally

or formally, as part of their course work. Some internship

experiences can earn you college credit. we can help you find

an internship where you’ll build new skills and knowledge or

help you plan an experience with an organization or company

you already know.

What you’ll discover is that the worldneeds you. We’re going to need yourskills, your knowledge, your growingexpertise, the humanistic perspectiveyou will develop at a liberal arts col-lege, your creativity, your leadershipand your imagination.ROLL UPYOUR SLEEVES—LET’S GETTOWORK.

“I started interning at the local radio station, WBTN, my freshman

year and now I’m co-hosting a two-hour drive-time show. We play

music, read the news and invite guests to talk with us about various

subjects. 8e experience taught me a lot of practical things about the

field, and it’s been an amazing experience for me careerwise. I hope

to continue in communications as a journalist and a writer.”

–Bethany Michelle Stolz, Hubbardston, MACommunications Major, Creative Writing minor

“I’m interning at a local

center for elderly residents.

Being a nurse is an important

job—you have to be smart,

patient and compassionate

to others. Nothing is more

assuring to a patient than

to know that his or her nurse

is caring, compassionate and

knowledgeable—and no job is

more rewarding than knowing

that you can help someone in

his or her time of need.”
