Vision/Goal
• Interdisciplinary base-‐of-‐the-‐pyramid product design seminar
• Product design seminar for engineering senior design students focusing on emerging market technologies in the developing world
• 2 semester, 1 credit / semester addi/on to senior design capstone -‐ adding content that teaches skills and techniques for effec/ve product design in the developing world
Course Strategy Map
learn engineering design process
goal and scope definition
develop / identify engineering
specifications
develop concepts / concept tradeoffs
complete detailed designs / CAD
build and test protytpes
apply economics to drive design / cost
analysis

customs / gender roles /
GAPDavid's lecture on professional tech
transfer packages - communication
purpose
GAP / find international standards
in-class reflectionread case studies
(find latrine storage example)
supply chain analysis
(engineering-centric)
videos of modern vs. local product construction

Non-verbal translation of
designs / simple sketching
Guest mini-lecture, strategies for eliciting user
feedback in different cultures
role-play exercises (offending your
hosts)GAP
Fill-in template: periodically update
and review
GAP / identify moral & legal standards that apply to their
product
Disseminate information to E4C-
like group

Assessment
Cargill Speaker, Tech Transfer logic
and mechanics
3rd party 'interview' - go through checklist of materials required for product, validate
feasibility with in-country source
identify list of pairs for comparison
examples of same product from
different locations
Peace Corp Volunteer handbook
- culture matters / find similar materials
more directed towards product dev.
Exercises from book
Local diaspora / international
students on campus
graded review of customer
requirements
understanding the customer
requirements - unknowns around
roles / customs
customer / user feedback
Village Technology Handbook
Design for supply chain, design for
market
introduce need for alternative forms of
visual communication/
training materials
link this objective to tech transfer
package
identifying critical stakeholders
supply chain analysis
(stakeholder-centric)
2. in-class peer review of products
with an eye for product issues / misuse potential
provide students with exposure to
'good' training materials / sketches
AHA! 1: Tech Transfer Package
document "wrap-up" package for next design team, tech transfer package
Dissemination of tech transfer package to
appropriate sources
• Standardize project endpoints -‐ industry B.P.’s
• Expose students to repositories for this informa/on -‐ add to community knowledge
• System for building good ideas -‐ preven/ng pre-‐mature push of tech dev.
AHA! 2: Technical Product Communica/on Strategies
introduce need for alternative forms of
visual communication/
training materials
Shea butter communication case
study / form coop
provide students with exposure to
'good' training materials / sketches
Non-verbal translation of
designs / simple sketching

GAP 1: BOP Product Design Economics
• Best prac/ce documents?
• Case studies for student review?
• Effec/ve student ac/vi/es?
GAP 2 / AHA! 3: Health and Safety Standards for BOP Product Design
• Best prac/ce documents?
• Case studies for student review?
• Effec/ve student ac/vi/es?
• Find interna/onal design standards, create base template for students
• Have students review template and augment , consider ethics?
Commitment• Next Steps– Build material/ac/vity/resource base for 2 credit seminar to parallel senior design
– Determine how to get credits for class approved / secure student incen/ves
• Timeframe/Schedule– 5 year phased deployment
• Needs/Partnerships– short term: fill in GAPs
– long term: systema/ze BOP design seminar, bring
