Readiness Phase
How do I know if my udenʦ n d to u e R din s Ph e?
What about terms 2, 3 and 4?In Terms 2, 3 and 4 we recommend you go back to the beginning of your Teacher Book (page 19) and follow the instructions for Exploring the Sound, Exploring the List Words and Working with Words in each unit.
Do I need to do things each day with my students? To ensure students become totally familiar with the sounds and to introduce them to the simple code (graphemes), there are a couple of things we recommend you do every day.
• Sing the Sound Waves chants and actions (see page 12 & 13 Teacher Book 1 and use the Let’s Sing the Sounds CD).
• Play lots of games with the Sound Waves Sound Charts (see page 174 Teacher Book 1 for fun ideas).
• Use the Sound Waves Flash Cards to introduce the simple code (graphemes) for each sound. (For the k c unit, start with the k, c card.)
• Read the teaching notes for each unit in Teacher Book 1. • Segment and blend words orally then on the board as the
graphemes are introduced, for example, by week 3 bad – /b/a/d/, beg – /b/e/g/, bed – /b/e/d/.
What if my students have used Sound Waves before and don’t need the alternative program?Students who have a solid understanding of phonemes, graphemes and CVC words should complete Unit 1 Getting Started in Student Book 1 pages 6 and 7. Extra teacher information about this unit can be found on pages 15 to 18 in Teacher Book 1. After completing this unit with your students you simply follow the rest if the program laid out in your Sound Waves 1 Teacher Book.
S p 1 Play the Warm Up activity. (eg page 20 in Sound Waves 1 Teacher Book)
S p 2Complete the Identify the Sound activity (eg page 20 in Sound Waves 1 Teacher Book) There are generally two options here. You will usually select Option 1 however, if you decide your students would enjoy both activities then select them both.
S p 3
Modify the Match Up (Pictures to Words) game (eg page 22 in Sound Waves 1 Teacher Book). Use the pictures that represent CVC words. Ask students to identify the picture then, as an oral exercise, segment and blend the word for each picture. You can fi nd the Black Line Masters for these games under each unit in the TLC. (If you have access to a Foundation Year Teacher Book, play games from the Discovering Graphemes Phase for each sound.)
S p 4Ask students to complete Activity 2 in Sound Waves 1 Student Book. This activity usually asks students to colour the picture if they hear the focus sound in its name.
Term 1 Modifi ed Program
Sound Waves 1 requires students to have a basic knowledge of: • the phonemes of our language• basic graphemes used to represent the phonemes• reading and writing words with the CVC (consonant-vowel-
consonant) pattern.
If you are unsure of the abilities of your students we have provided a set of Readiness Black Line Masters to help you identify any problems. If your class requires help with these basic skills we suggest you use a modifi ed version or the Sound Waves 1 program to
introduce phonemes, graphemes and CVC words more slowly to your students.
What does this modifi ed program look like? The Sound Waves Teacher and Student Books are meant to be used to teach one sound per week for 36 weeks. The modifi ed program suggests you use 4 simple steps to introduce all the consonants and the short vowel sounds only in Term 1. (See the Suggested Yearly Program following for details.)
How should I do this?Introduce 3 new sounds per week. We suggest you introduce one sound per day and leave the last two days of the week for revision. For each sound you introduce follow these 4 easy steps.
