DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK
PONDICHERRY UNIVERSITY
As part of PondicherryUniversity Village adoption initiative, the Department of Social Work has
adopted a villageat Ganapathichettykulam for holistic development. The students of Social Work
during the concurrent field work practicumrender their professional services in diverse settings
comprising of social work at work place, medical and psychiatric social work, family and child
welfare, social work with marginalized and women and various other Community settings in
rural and urban areas, to hone their social work skills and expertise, and bring positive change in
the life of people. In this continuation the Department of Social Work aimed to adopt a village to
bring holistic community development with high level of sensitization on health and hygiene
towards clean and green villagerealizing the dream of Swachh Bharat. This village adoption
program will also try to ensure community ownership and behavioral change.
The Department of Social Work, Pondicherry University is very keen on envisioning Swachh
Puducherry, efforts were made to identify and shortlist villages on various cleanliness indicators.

conductedby the faculties and the students of Department to procure the firsthand information on

Pilot visits were made in the shortlisted villages to zero in on Ganapathichettykulam kuppam
in Olgarate Municipality and Kalapet constituency. The village consists of approximately 300
families of which majority are dwelling on the seaside. The members belong to fisherman
community and fishing is their main source of livelihood. To further understand their socio-
3
economic status, cleanliness, health and hygiene, waste management, community participation
etc, community meeting and household survey was conducted. After analyzing the survey it was
found that four major problems are affecting the cleanliness of the village.
1. Open defecation is very common practice among the general population in the village.
2. No common toilet and only very few households are having individual toilets. Due to this
young girls and women are more vulnerable facing safety, personal hygiene and health
issues.
3. Lack of awareness about health, personal hygiene, waste management, pro-environmental
behavior and women safety and alternate livelihood opportunities.
4. Hazardous sewage from chemical factory in the surrounding area is dumped into the
seawater. It has made coastal water frothy on its surface and also led to the extinction of
marine species. Consequently, polluting the entire ecosystem and affecting the livelihood
and also causing various health issues.
From the above findings it was inferred that to make holistic development in the village, the core
issues oncleanlinessneed to be attended on priority basis. To attain the Swachh goal the most
important was mobilizing community members for awareness and sensitization to seek more
participation and support. With an objective to sustain the initiative,Community meetings were
organized, action groups were convened, local resources both man and materials were identified,
one to one meeting was held with women in the community. In the series of visits made by the
department the students were supported by community members in the cleanliness campaign in
the village and surrounding areas. Theme based rally and street plays were performed by
students to show case how the society is changing towards Clean India and how we can adopt it.
These street plays not only focused on the cleanliness but also on open defecation where women
are facing challenges in their day to day life. Students with the help of villagers cleaned the
village and the coastal area of Ganapathichettykulam.Students divided themselves into small
groups and went on to each house to explain the need of keeping surroundings clean and
sensitized the people on solid waste management. As we found many of the households despite
having toilets in their houses practicing open defecation, the consequences of open defecation
and problems faced by community members in general and women in particular was explained.
4
Preliminary mobilization and sensitization activities by the students fostered overwhelming
participation by community members in the cleaning campaign. Ever since, the Department has
been making follow-up measures to sustain the cleanliness activities, to assess the cleanliness
measures taken up by the villagers and help them in cleaning the village. The students of social
work frequently visits the school in the areawhere most of the students come from the village,
and made many sensitization programs such as street plays, telecasting documentaries on
cleanliness and creating awareness on mission Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.Consistent efforts are
made to change the mindset of the people in the locality, to bring behavioral change, to induce
community ownership and to be accountable for every action towards household and community
health and hygiene in Ganapathichettykulam village.
The Recent developments in the village can be noted in the reduction of practicing open
defecation, willingness to use community toilet if provided by the municipality, waste
segregation at householdby keeping dustbins, use of community dustbins, increasing
participation of community members, cleanliness initiative by schools, temples etc. It is not just
a day work which brings this change but the continuous effort of the Department of Social Work
inmaking community to understand the need of having a clean life and healthy living. As we
observe the shift of the people towards keeping their village clean we can say swachh
puducherry is not far in achieving its goal to make Indiaas Swachh Bharat.
