Welcome to the 2010 SwanseaMarina handbook which isaimed at providing you with allthe information you require fora pleasurable stay in Swansea.
Please take time to read theinformation contained inside whichincludes important locking proceduresand safety information.
With the marina staff working hard toensure your stay goes as smoothly aspossible, all you have to do is sit back,relax and enjoy all that Swansea andthe Gower coastline have to offer.
The Marina lies in the very heart ofthe City’s redeveloped and awardwinning Maritime Quarter and is
surrounded by restaurants, shops andmarine businesses.
We were the first coastal Marina toopen in the Bristol Channel and we areone of the few Marinas in the UK tohold the coveted Yacht HarbourAssociation 5 Gold Anchor award.
We are bordered by the City Centre onone side and our own sandy beach onthe other.
Road access is excellent London isabout 3.5 hours away on the M4Motorway and the rail service is to berecommended.
The locks are manned by ourexperienced staff and access is almostcontinuous, except at LWST.

Marina GuideCruisingFor those wishing to sail locally our areacovers the beautiful Gower coast. Thereare lovely sandy beaches to anchor off andclear waters for swimming and diving:perfect for sailing.
Further afield, Ilfracombe is about 4 hourssail to the south, whilst to the south westlies Lundy Island, with Padstow and theNorth Cornish coast beyond. Sailing westalong the South Wales coast will bring youto Tenby and then Milford Haven.
Marina Manners and EtiquetteCustomers are asked to please tie theirhalyards back from the mast to avoidunnecessary noise in this mixedenvironment. Please do not pump bilgewater or contaminants into the Marina.Your assistance in these matters is greatlyappreciated by the management and otherboat owners. Please note that there is aspeed limit of 4 knots and young childrenshould be supervised at all times for safety.
Car ParkingBerthholders and visitors may park inNorthside pay and display car park. Also carparks adjacent to the bridgehead gates.Longstay car parking will be available withinour boatyard throughout the summermonths. Please display your parking permitsticker, available from reception. Ownersare reminded to secure their vehicles andremove any valuables when unattended.

Boatyard We have a 20 tonne Marine TravelHoist available. A crane facility is alsoavailable for masts etc. The yard hasvarious businesses that undertake hull,GRP, wood, engineering and electricalrepairs. Free storage ashore is offeredto annual berthholders for a limitedperiod (space permitting).
RecyclingWithin our refuse compounds and onthe pontoons you can recycle:Cans OilGlass BatteriesPaper/Magazine Wood
RefuseTrolleys are available from the refusecompounds at the top of eachbridgehead. Please return your trolleyfor the next customer. Domesticrubbish is to be deposited in the skipsprovided in sealed bags.
WaterAllow hose pipes to run for 30seconds before filling tanks on thepontoons. Please recoil the hose pipesafter use and do not leave the hoseend in the water as this is unhygienic.
Diesel & GasDiesel pumps are located on eitherside of the Marina Lock; diesel andgas bottle refi lls are available from7.00am until half an hour before theoffice is closed. No petrol is availableat the Marina but there is acommercial garage nearby.
A public payphone is situated close tothe North side bridghead gate inphase 1.
LaundryThe laundry is located at Marinareception, hours are as reception.Please supply your own washingpowder. See display for currentcharges.

Electricity SuppliesAll electricity supplies are protectedby 16A Miniature Circuit Breakersand 30mA Residual Current CircuitBreakers. Electricity take off pointsare also available in the boat yard.Most electricity supplies arecontrolled by a computerisedmetered system on a pay as you gobasis. Credit can be obtained at theMarina office or over the telephoneusing a credit/debit card. Aninstruction sheet for the system isavailable at the Marina office. Pleasesee our price list for current charges.
Continuity of supply cannot beguaranteed due to the nature of thesystem and because of the safetydevices fitted to each supply.
SecurityEach bridgehead has a self locking gate,access is via a pontoon security fob.Contact reception for these. There is arefundable deposit of £5.00 per fob,please retain your receipt. Please donot leave or prop the gates open; sitesecurity is in everyone’s interest.
A security officer patrols the Marina at night and CCTV is in operationthroughout the marina.
Toilets and ShowersThere is 24 hour access to thesefacilities by use of a Marina pontoonsecurity fob. They are located atthree locations:
• The rear (south) of Marina Controlbuilding. A toilet for the disabledis also located here.
• Adjacent to the bridgehead on theNorth side of Phase I.
• Adjacent to the bridgehead on theSouth side of Phase II.
• Slop and sluice rooms areavailable in phase II of the Marina.
A ship’s toilet may not be usedwhilst in the Marina.
FIRE ACTIONBuildings, on hearing the alarm:

Read and Remember
The fire cabinets on thepontoons are checkedonce a week.
IN CASE OF AFIRE ON BOARD 1 Raise the alarm.
2 Contact the emergencyservices. Telephone point Marina Office, telephonePhase I or North side bybertholders’ gate.
3 Clear the area of people.
4 Only tackle the fire if it issafe to do so, with theextinguishers provided inthe emergency cabinets.
5 Retreat to a safe distanceupwind Do not run!
6 Do not obstruct bridge emergency services willneed clear access.
7 Follow instructions ofmarina staff.
8 Do not return to the vesseluntil the all clear has beengiven.
Safety Advice
General SafetyFire extinguishers are located at regularintervals in large red boxes on thepontoons, as well as life rings. Please donot remove these items, they may beneeded in an emergency. Small childrenshould wear life jackets at all times. A public telephone is located near Northside bridghead gate in Phase 1.
Pontoon Safety Adverse WeatherThe pontoons can become very slipperywhen they are wet or icy. Grit bins aresituated close to each bridgehead. Highwinds can cause mobility problems andstrong gusts can catch you off guard.Customers are advised not to go out ontothe pontoons in adverse weatherconditions unless absolutely necessary.Particular care should be taken whennegotiating the bridgehead ramps andgetting on or off boats.
InsurancePlease note that third party insurance fora minimum of £2,000,000 is mandatoryfor the duration of your stay at SwanseaMarina.
Speed LimitsThere is a 4 knot speed limit in the MarinaImpounded water and river. The speedlimit in the river is enforced by the docksboard. Please control your wash.

Access to Tidal Locks
All access from the sea to the Marina isthrough the Tawe Barrage Lock duringthe published hours. During busy lockingperiods a queuing system will be inoperation.
Vessels that do not make contact withthe Lockmaster or disobey his/herinstruction will not be given priority overother traffic.
In the interest of every boat owner’ssafety, it is of the utmost importancethat the Lockmaster’s instructions areobeyed at all times.

In Swansea Bay tidal streams flow anticlockwise for9.5 hrs (Swansea HW 3.5 to +6), with at times arace off Mumbles Hd. From HW 6 to 3 the streamreverses, setting N past Mumbles Hd towardsSwansea. Keep seaward of Mixon Shoal. When N ofSW Inner Green Grounds (SWIGG) SCM It buoy, Q (6)+ LFI 15s keep to W of dredged chan and clear ofcommercial ships. Yachts must motor in harbour andapproach, maximum speed 4kn.

All Marina users are reminded thatwe share the entrance to the riverwith the fairway for commercialshipping entering and leaving theport of Swansea.
It is very important that all boatowners obey the rules laid down bythe authorities and give way tocommercial shipping at all times.
Entering and Leaving the Port
All pleasure craft using the port mustobserve the rules governing the“Prevention of Collisions at Sea”,particularly when navigating within thedredged channel North of theS.W.I.G.G. buoy (South West InnerGreen Grounds) to the harbourentrance. You are advised to approachthe harbour entrance in the waters tothe west of the dredged channel(where practicable).
Large vessels entering or leaving theharbour must be given a wide berth atall times.
All pleasure craft must be under powerwhen in the vicinity of the harbour andshould clear waters used bycommercial shipping as soon aspossible.
Swansea Docks
Port RegulationsTo seaward, vessels approaching theharbour will see 9 signal lightsdisplayed in 3 columns of 3 lights.The centre light of the westerlycolumn controls pleasure craft.
When this light is red craft must notenter the river and should hold SWof the westernbreakwater. If indoubt call Swansea DocksVHFChannel 14, or Tawe Lock Channel18.
When the entry lights of the Tawelock come into view, vessels shouldmake radio contact for lockinginstructions and information fromthe duty lockmaster on VHFChannel 18. Call sign “Tawe Lock”.

It is essential that all boat ownerswishing to proceed through thelocks or swingbridge operate a VHFradio.
Vessels must call “Swansea Marina” onchannel 80 before leaving their berth torequest lock information and mustremain listening on CH. 80 until passagethrough the bridge or lock iscompleted.
When you require use of the TaweBarrage lock you must call ‘Tawe Lock’to request information and remainlistening on CH. 18 until passagethrough the lock is completed. Do notproceed into the locks unlessinstruction has been given.

Important Notes Lock procedure
Using the Marina lockNormal procedure for locking outthrough the Tawe Barrage lock is for thelock to be taken down on the hour andreturn to the river on the half hour.
The first lock out of the day at the Tawelock will be taken down at approximately0710. The last Tawe lock in is half an hourbefore the close of business each day.Boat owners should be ready to leavetheir berth at approximately quarter tothe hour to allow vessels sufficient timeto enter the Tawe lock.
Any deviation from the above will be atthe discretion of the duty Tawe Lockmasterwho will pay due regard to the volume oftraffic and any other prevailing conditions.
Any vessels not returning on the same dayare required to inform the Lockmaster andCoastguard. Two holding buoys aresituated downstream from the lock andmay be used outside of locking hours.Great care is necessary at low waterspring tides as there is a danger of dryingout.

The Blue Flag is an exclusive ecolabel awarded to around 3100beaches and marinas in 35 countriesacross Europe, South Africa, NewZealand, Canada and the Caribbean.
The Blue Flag works towardssustainable development atbeaches/marinas through strictcriteria dealing with water quality,environmental education andinformation, environmentalmanagement and safety and otherservices.
The Blue Flag Campaign includesenvironmental education andinformation for the public, decisionmakers and tourism operators.
Naturally Swansea Marina will bemaintaining its high environmentalstandards and will be reapplying forthe Blue Flag in 2010.

The Gold Anchor Award Schemehas been established to improvethe standards of facilities availableto all boat owners. MarinaOperators who are Members ofthe Yacht Harbour Association mayenter the Scheme for assessment.
The level of the Award ranges fromthree to five Gold Anchors. AnyAward is a sign of a quality marina,whilst the number of anchorsindicates the level of the facilitiesavailable. The Scheme is purely
voluntary and is designed to bringthe industry to the forefront ofboating and to encourage betterstandards.
Swansea Marina was assessedunder the Gold Anchor AwardScheme in 2009. We are pleased toinform you that as a result of ourefforts to provide you with a firstclass and value for money facility,we were awarded five GoldAnchors.

Blue Flag
Swansea Marina has a uniquecombination of safe mooring facilities,wonderful sailing and enough activitiesto keep every crew member happy.
Within a few minutes walk there arecinemas, theatres, restaurants, museumsand a sandy beach. The town, which has awarm and friendly character all of its own,boasts a thriving market and coveredshopping centre both of which are withineasy walking distance of our facilities.
For those who enjoy walking and cyclingthere is the long promenade to the fishingvillage of Mumbles, still a magnet forvisitors and gateway to the spectacularGower peninsula. The latter offers coastalwalks, sheltered bays and breathtakingscenery. Locally, there are five golfcourses to choose from and every kind ofentertainment from quiet pubs to thetown’s nightclubs which draw revellersfrom all over South Wales.

Swansea is just a few minutesfrom junctions 42 to 47 of the M4and at just two and a half hoursfrom Birmingham or an hour and aquarter from Bristol is uniquelyplaced for access from theMidlands and the West. An hourlytrain service runs from Swansea toPaddington.
Many of our visitors havediscovered the attractions ofSwansea Marina as a release fromlong hours spent commuting toother sailing areas on the SouthCoast or the South West.
Here you will be spoilt for choiceof sailing area. Favourite day tripsmight be to Oxwich Bay, ThreeCliffs or Ilfracombe – longerweekends or holidays might takein Tenby, Milford Haven, Padstowor Ireland.
The wide sweep of Swansea Bayoffers a safe and sandyplayground for sailors where you
can forget the overcrowdedwaters of other resorts for a quietafternoon spent choosing a bay todrop anchor. If you prefer thethrill of competition MumblesYacht Club offers a full racingprogramme and we can contactthem for you.
