Wallboard InstallationIf the installation of the wall panels is covering anexisting wall surface, proceed to the next section.1. Cut out openings for the shower faucet(s) and

shower head. Install 1/2” moisture-resistantcementboard or greenboard over back (1), front (2),and rear (3) wall surfaces of the rough opening.

Install the wall board with a 1/2” gap above the showerbase side lip, the front edge of the shower base, and thefloor to prevent possible water (wicking affect) damageto the wall.

2. Apply a coat of water or oil-based primer/sealer toall the surfaces of the cementboard or greenboard(follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Allow theprimer to dry thoroughly before applying anysilicone.

Back Panel1. If the back wall measures less than the width of the

panel, the panel will need to be cut to fit theopening. Use a piece of cardboard to create atemplate for the front and rear walls Make sure thecardboard is laying flat on top of the shower baseand up against the wall. Scribe (mark) thecardboard template, as shown. This will ensure theback panel fits the exact contour of the front or rearwalls. Cutting the back panel to precisely fit the wallis not necessary if the corner molding supplied inmost kits is used. This corner molding will covergaps up to 1/2” on each side.

Panel Installation

Fumes HazardThe fumes from the silicone andsolvents used by the installer can beharmful if used in an unventilated room.

Always work in a well-ventilated area. To keep the areawell-ventilated, open windows and use exhaust fans. Ifadequate ventilation is not achievable or practical, userespiratory protective equipment.

1. Clean the backs of each panel with denaturedalcohol or another non oil-based cleaning solvent.

Do not use oil-based cleaners, such as mineral spirits, toclean the panels. The oil in the cleaner will prevent thepanel from adhering properly to the wall.

2. Apply the silicone in 1-1/4” diameter dots every 8 to10 inches apart over the surface of the panel.Follow the silicone manufacturer’s instructions andnote all ventilation and installation precautions.

Note: When using an industrial grade hot melt glue gunin place of bracing, apply the silicone as stated in Step 2.Then apply the hot melt glue to the panel, as needed, andquickly press the panel firmly into place. Also refer to theWARNING on the next page for hot melt glue aplications.

Installation Procedure

Page 15: Swanstone Wall Kits and Panels - Lowes Holidaypdf.lowes.com/installationguides/671037132936_install.pdfrecommended maximum safe lifting weight is 51 pounds, with all lifting conditions

This process is not recommended for the do-it-yourselfhomeowner.

Using hot melt glue in place of bracing requiresapplication by a qualified installer. This temporarybonding method must hold the panel to the wall during the24 hour curing time of the silicone adhesive. The hot meltglue by itself is not sufficient to bond the panel to the wall. Therefore, improper or inadequate application of the hotmelt glue may result in insufficient bonding of the panel tothe wall. Due to the weight of the panel, failure to followthis recommendation may allow it to detach itself from thewall, causing possible injury to someone in or around theshower enclosure.

Improper installation methods may also result in waterdamage or other damage to floors, walls, or other portionsof your building or home.

Do not use a home applicator, craft-type hot melt gluegun. Using this type of glue gun will NOT hold the panelsin place long enough for the silicone to bond properly tothe wall.

3. Install back panel (1) first. Then, install left handpanel (2). Finally, install right hand panel (3).

4. Firmly press the surface of each panel against thewall. It is important to apply hand pressure to theentire surface of the panel to bond it to the wallsurface.

Apron Strips (optional)If the wall and wall panel extends beyond the showerbase, adding apron strips will provide a finished look toyour installation.

The two small apron strips can be cut from scraps of apanel. When cutting these apron strips, make sure thefinished edge of the panel is facing outward.

1. Measure the distance from the top of the showerbase to the outside of the panel.

2. Cut two pieces of the Swanstone material.

3. Hold the apron strips in place and scribe the angleof the shower base onto each piece. Remember, donot cut the finished edge.

4. Place silicone on the back side of the apron strips.

5. Attach the apron strips to the wall.

Temporary BracingInstall temporary bracing to hold the three panels inplace until the silicone is completely set (usually 24 hours). This will allow proper curing of the silicone.

To ensure contact between the panels and walls until thesilicone sets, install temporary bracing after completinginstallation. The bracing should be constructed fromlengths of 2 x 4’s. Failure to brace in the mannerdescribed could keep the panels from adhering, resultingin personal injury, as well as water damage or otherdamage to floors, walls, or other portions of your buildingor home.

To prevent scratches or other damage, make sure thereare no nails or other foreign objects in the surface of thebracing that is placed against the panel.

If the horizontal braces are fastened to the vertical bracesusing nails or screws, make sure the fasteners do notpenetrate the surface of the panel. Also, to preventpossible damage to the walls, do not apply excessivepressure to the braces.

Soap Dish Installation (Optional)The soap dish is a corner mount design. The soapdishes can be stacked in one corner or placed inopposite corners.

Note: The current production soap dish is molded with asquare corner (as shown in the illustrations). This shaperequires installation of the optional corner molding afterinstallation of the soap dish. If your kit contains a sculptedcorner soap dish, the optional corner molding should beinstalled before the soap dish. When the current stock ofsculpted corner soap dishes is exhausted, this design willno longer be available.

Installation of Square Corner Soap Dish1. Select a desirable height for mounting one or both

soap dishes. A height of at least 43” from theshower floor to the soap dish is recommended.

2. After marking the height, draw a 4” level-line on bothwalls. These lines will be used to align the topedges of the soap dish.

3. Dry fit the soap dish prior to applying silicone. If thewall is not exactly 90 degrees square, it will benecessary to sand the sides of the soap dish inorder to achieve proper fit, using a course grit (60 grit) sandpaper.

4. Apply silicone to the edge of the soap dish.

6. Hold the soap dish securely in place and wipe offexcess silicone. You will want a uniform bead onboth top and bottom.

7. Temporarily secure the soap dish with masking tape,as shown. Remove the tape after approximately twohours. Do not place anything on the soap dish for atleast 24 hours.

Installation of Sculpted Corner Soap Dish

If installing the sculpted corner soap dish, the optionalcorner molding should be installed before the soap dish isinstalled. Once the corner molding is in place, proceedwith Steps 1 through 7 of the “Installation of the SquareCorner Soap Dish” section.

The following illustrations show the sculpted corner soapdish and the shower with the corner molding installed.

Corner Molding (Optional)Installing the corner molding is optional. If the panelswere scribed and cut to create a tight-fitting corner, thenthe corner molding can be eliminated. If, however, thereare gaps between the front/rear panel, the cornermolding should be installed. Either option, if doneproperly, is acceptable.

If the optional soap dish was installed, cut one piece ofmolding to fit above the soap dish and one for below thesoap dish.Note: The silicone adhesive required for the installationof the corner molding is the same as used for theinstallation of the Swanstone wall panels. This kitcontains enough adhesive for both the wall panels andthe corner molding.

Care and CleaningThe Swanstone products are stain and abrasionresistant; however, the finish requires reasonable care.

Because cleaning products change over time, alwayscheck the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure it iscompatible with solid surface acrylic. DO NOT use acleaner if the label indicates it should not be used on solidsurface acrylics. DO NOT use spray-on cleaners thatrequire daily use without immediately rinsing with water tostop the chemical cleaning reaction because damage willresult and void the warranty.

Day-To-Day CleanupSimply wipe the surfaces with a clean towel to removewatermarks and residues. All Swanstone products canbe cleaned with warm water, a soft cloth, and normalhousehold detergents or cleansers, such as Fantastic,Formula 409, Clorox Clean-up, Handy Andy, Mr. Clean,Dow Scrubbing Bubbles, Lysol Foaming Tub and TileCleaner, Top Job, or Lestoil. Always rinse off cleanerswithin five minutes of application.

Occasional scrubbing with household abrasive cleanersensures that the original luster is maintained.

Caulking JointsInspect caulking joints monthly for damage or any signsof separation from the mating surface. Cracks in thecaulking will allow water to leak into the surroundingsurfaces. Reapply caulking to any joint showingsigns of wear or cracking. Failure to inspect andrepair caulking joints will void the warranty.

Surface RepairLight ScratchesUse 400 grit sandpaper to remove light scratches in thesurface.

Deep Scratches or GougesFor deeper scratches or gouges, use 220 or 320 gritsandpaper. A “Scotchbright pad” can be used to blendthe repair into the surrounding area.
